DESCRIPTION

DRIFTERS - Established in 1983, has gone from strength to strength to become one of the most formidable forces in tourism in southern Africa. Our philosophy is based on one of SUSTAINABILITY – the long-term assurance that whatever activity we conduct in any specifi c natural area must contribute to the conservation and to the well-being of the inhabitants of that area, thus ensuring that future generations will be able to visit those same areas and enjoy the same experience as did their parents before them.

For over two decades Drifters has been investing both physically and financially in numerous environmental and community projects, whilst we do not try to score cheap marketing points by claiming "Carbon Credits" and the like, clients travelling on our tours will witness first-hand results of our efforts - nature reserves we have created, extensive environments that we have rehabilitated, schools we have sponsored, communities that we have incorporated into our business, etc, etc. Be assured that a considerable percentage of your tour fee is being invested in order to ensure that future generations are able to enjoy the same experiences you have.

ItinerariesThe day by day descriptions published in this brochure are intended as a rough guideline only. Adventure travel by nature is unpredictable, weather patterns, game migrations, road conditions, and a multitude of other factors may necessitate itinerary changes that ultimately are for the client’s benefit - it is essential that clients are flexible and open minded in this regard.

DRIFTERS - Established in 1983, has gone from strength to strength to become one of the most impressive forces in tourism in southern Africa. Our philosophy is based on one of SUSTAINABILITY – the long-term assurance that whatever activity we conduct in any specific natural area must contribute to the conservation and to the well-being of the inhabitants of that area, thus ensuring that future generations will be able to visit those same areas and enjoy the same experience as did their parents before them.

Drifters’ expansion has been gradual and calculated, and over the years we have earned an enviable reputation for offering “unbeatable value for money”. Offering value for money however does not mean that we provide an inferior product; in fact, quite the contrary. Our packages are renowned for including far more than others on offer, and our vast infrastructure of Drifters owned game reserves, bush camps, lodges, boats, canoes, adventure equipment, and other resources mean that clients are able to enjoy the best of Africa without added expense.

Being Southern African owned and based, Drifters have a company registered in every country in which we operate and we employ large numbers of local people in all those countries. Clients can therefore feel assured that a percentage of their tour fee is in fact going directly to all those local communities. Drifters are also members of all major tourist associations and authorities, and are licensed and insured to operate throughout the region, thus ensuring accountability and providing clients with security and peace of mind.

All of our tours are inclined toward the interesting and often unique fauna and flora of Africa, and for this reason we often leave the “beaten track” to explore remote areas where little or no familiar infrastructure exists. In these areas we generally camp, but all equipment is supplied, and no previous experience is necessary. All that you need to bring along is a sleeping bag, towel, and a supplementary mattress (if desired). When we enter built-up areas where facilities exist, we use lodges, bungalows or small hotels. Drifters tours are based on twin shared accommodation, however we do not charge a single supplement for individual bookings.

Having said all this, all that remains is you, the client. We target adventure-minded people generally of 18 to 55 years of age, who through their own active participation in the tours get maximum enjoyment. Our clients are normally down-to-earth people from all walks of life and from all corners of the globe, who by choice have selected a mobile safari in order to enjoy the maximum experience.

If you really wish to spend your time on an African safari with a small international group, and you relish the thought of an environmentally educative and adventurous experience where “Roughing it and Loving it” is the order of the day, then Drifters is your only choice.Tr

Day 5 - 6: Swaziland/ZululandTraveling south through the Kingdom of the Swazi, our journey takes us into an area of spectacular scenery, and past numerous traditional homesteads and curio markets, then we enter Zululand, the area once ruled by the famed Shaka Zulu, a region of Game Reserves and impressive scenery. We spend the next two nights at the DRIFTERS ZULULAND LODGE, a spectacular accommodation situated in the sand forest on our private game reserve adjoining the World Heritage Site of St Lucia. During our stay we will do a game walk on the reserve and will conduct an open vehicle game drive in Hluhluwe Game Reserve. We will also visit a rural Zulu school which Drifters sponsors through the benefits of tourism. B L D ; B L D

Day 7: Dolphin Coast A short drive today, we travel to one of the world’s finest coastlines, where the unrelenting waves of the Indian Ocean continuously pound deserted beaches. Our next night will be at the DRIFTERS DOLPHIN COAST LODGE, situated literally on the beach. Our time here will be spent soaking up the sun and simply enjoying the beach and warm ocean. Tonight we enjoy a traditional fish braai on the Lodge’s patio. B L D

Day 8 - 9: DrakensbergAfter a visit to the holiday city of Durban, we travel back inland to the majestic Drakensberg mountain range, “Barrier of Spears”. (Lunch today will be own expense.) On reaching the foothills we transfer to a 4X4 vehicle, and then enjoy an exciting drive on mountain tracks up to the DRIFTERS DRAKENSBERG LODGE where we spend two nights in cosy log cabins. We will spend time hiking and exploring the wonders of this National Heritage Site and visiting a San rock art gallery. Pony trekking is also available. B D ; B L D

Day 10: Eastern Free StateAfter a 4x4 transfer back to our vehicle, we cross the Oliviershoek Pass to view the turquoise waters of Sterkfontein Dam, then on through the Golden Gate National Park, well known for its towering sandstone cliffs and wealth of unique wildlife. Lunch today will be own expense in the artful little village of Clarens – clients will have time to explore the art galleries and other unique attractions. This night will be spent in a small village in the Eastern Free State. B D

South Africa is a haven of spectacular scenery, abundant wildlife, diverse cultures and first world norms, topped

with a healthy and invigorating climate. These qualities make it an adventure destination not to be missed. A country virtually the size of Europe with over 3000 kilometer’s of unspoiled coastline, boasting climatic differences from searing hot desert to snow-capped peaks, and varied cultures, from the primitive Bushman to the most Western of ways. We visit the highlights, but leave the beaten track to explore the great outdoors and visit a variety of African eco-systems. Overnight stops are mostly at Drifters owned properties in pristine reserves where extensive conservation and game introduction projects have created truly unique accommodations and surroundings. The tour requires a certain amount of flexibility and an adventurous mentality.

Day 3: HazyviewA leisurely start, we travel through the rural Bushbuck ridge area to the sleepy settlement of Hazyview, and then on to the DRIFTERS HAZYVIEW LODGE, a log cabin spectacularly situated on stilts in indigenous subtropical forest on the banks of the Sabie River. This afternoon we will have time to relax at the bird hide, or enjoy swimming and forest walks. B L D

Day 4: Kruger National ParkLeaving Hazyview early, we travel the short distance to the more familiar part of Kruger National Park. Here we spend the entire day viewing animals from the high vantage point of our well-equipped vehicle. We enjoy a picnic lunch and then a night accommodated in one of the park’s rest camps. B L D

Day 1: Johannesburg-Bush LodgeDeparting at 06h30 from DRIFTERS JOHAN-NESBURG LODGE, we travel the scenic road to Mpumalanga. Along the way we visit Dullstroom, traverse Robbers Pass and spend time at the quaint historic town of Pilgrim’s Rest. We also visit Bourke’s Luck Potholes and the Blyde River Canyon. Thereafter we wind our way down the escarpment to the Lowveld bushveld where we overnight in our well-appointed DRIFTERS BUSH LODGE. In a private reserve within the Greater Kruger Park, the tented Lodge is tastefully designed, totally blends in with the environment, and offers comfortable beds, en-suite bathrooms, a refreshing splash pool, and stunning views over the surrounding bush. Dinner tonight is traditionally cooked on the open fire. D

Day 2: Bush LodgeWe start the day with customary coffee and rusks, before setting off on a game walk. We walk for approximately 3 hours in search of game, stopping regularly to learn more about

the ways of the bush. A Drifters guide and tracker lead all walks.

Return to the Lodge for a late morning

brunch after which it’s time to relax around the pool and to enjoy the surroundings. In the

afternoon we conduct an open vehicle game drive, which

develops into an extensive night drive. Being in the bush at night

provides us with the opportunity of viewing nocturnal animals, otherwise

not normally seen. This evening we enjoy a hearty bush “braai” and again fall asleep to the sounds of the wild.

Namibia 12 Day Camping SafariWindhoek to Windhoek

route guide The land of unrelenting sun, where the ground seems to beg the heavens for rain, and the landscapes

stretch uninterrupted for hundreds of kilometers on end. Deserts where one gazes in wonder and amazement at the animals and plants that survive in this harsh environment. This tour covers all of the highlights of central and northern Namibia, but also concentrates on “off the beaten track” routes and attractions. Flexibility, a willingness to participate, and an awareness of the elements are essential in order to get the most out of this tour.

Day 1: Windhoek - NamibSetting off from the capital, Windhoek at 09h00 (meet at 08h30), we travel south to Rehoboth, and then into the true Namib to the DRIFTERS DESERT CAMP in the Namibrand Nature Reserve. Here we camp alone in the wilderness with only the desert landscapes, rocky mountains and towering dunes to keep us company. The sunset over the desert is a sight to behold. We enjoy a traditional meal under the clear night skies before falling asleep to the sounds of the wild. D

Day 2: Namib DesertAwake to desert vistas that extend further than the eye can see. The DRIFTERS DESERT CAMP is nestled against a towering rock outcrop within a protected wilderness that DRIFTERS has conserved and restored, and on which game has been protected with the proceeds of tourism. During our stay here, we will conduct extensive guided walks and game drives both during the day and at night in order to better understand the desert fauna and flora. B L D

Day 3: SossusvleiAfter a short morning walk we pack up and continue through the endless plains to the Sesriem Canyon and the awesome Sossusvlei dunes. We will transfer into the dunes by 4x4 and will spend time climbing these spectacular mountains of sand before moving on to camp wild in the desert. B L D

Day 4 - 5: SwakopmundCrossing through the Namib Naukluft Park, we visit the dramatic Lunar Landscape and the ancient Welwitschia plants, before making for the coastal town of Swakopmund where we spend two nights in the centrally located, comfortable DRIFTERS SWAKOPMUND LODGE. We explore this holiday town and its surrounds thoroughly, and enjoy one evening meal at a local nightspot (own expense). Clients will have the opportunity to partake in quad biking, sand boarding and sky diving whilst here (own expense). B L D ; B

Day 6: Skeleton Coast - Spitskop

Today we head up the barren Skeleton Coast, scene of many a shipwreck, to the Seal Colony at Cape Cross where thousands of Cape Fur Seals can be seen ashore. Venturing inland, our next stop is at the impressive Spitskop where we will camp wild amongst the boulders at the base of this unusual granitic outcrop. We hope to see the endemic colorful Lovebirds during our stay here. B L D

Day 7: Twyfelfontein - Palmwag

A long day, we move on to visit the Organ Pipes and the bushman Rock Engravings at Twyfelfontein before entering Damaraland and crossing the Grootberg to camp the night near the oasis of Palmwag. This is one of a few sanctuaries used by the rare Desert Elephants, and we hope to see these magnificent animals up close today. B L D

Day 8 - 9: Epupa FallsTraveling through the heart of the Kaokovelt today, we make our way north to the Ango-lan border where we will camp at a com-munity project on the banks of the Cunene river at the awesome Epupa Falls. During our time here we hope to interact with the nomadic Himba people, a tribe that live in this inhospitable region and wander with their livestock in search of grazing. We will also explore the area surrounding the Falls. B L D ; B L D

Day 10 - 11: Etosha National Park

Entering Etosha National Park today, we will spend two nights here in search of the big game that this park is so well known for. One evening will be spent at a floodlit waterhole, watching the many animals that come down to drink. During these days we will conduct extensive game drives within the park. One night we will dine at a camp restaurant (own expense). B L D ; B L

Day 12: Etosha - WindhoekThis morning we leave the Park to make the journey back to Windhoek. We expect to arrive back in the capital in the late afternoon. B L

Day 4 - 5: Orange RiverToday we cross the border into Namibia, then travel the short distance to our base camp on the banks of the Orange River from where we begin our canoe adventure. Once we have packed all of our gear into our two man canoes, we set off into the wilderness. The Orange River creates an awesome spectacle, a green ribbon winding its way through the desert and towering mountains of the Richtersveld National Park. We will spend one night camping on the banks, under the desert skies, and will then return to our base camp and vehicle to camp the next night in relative comfort. B L D ; B L D

Day 6: Fish River Canyon - NamibToday we head directly to the Fish River Canyon, the second largest of its kind in the world. After visiting the viewpoints and exploring the lip of the Canyon, we continue into the true Namib to set up camp at the DRIFTERS DESERT CAMP. B L D

Day 7: Namib DesertThe DRIFTERS DESERT CAMP is situated on our private Nature Reserve within the Namibrand Nature Reserve and is home to numerous species of desert adapted fauna and flora. The camp is spectacularly built against a rock outcrop between the stark mountains and the red dune fields. During our stay here we will conduct guided walks and drives including a night drive within the reserve - allowing us to observe animals at close range. B L D

Day 8: SossusvleiA relaxed start, we travel directly to the dune fields of Sossusvlei. Day 8 - 12: Flexible Game Reserve Schedule

(Moremi / Savuti / Chobe)We pop back into Maun first thing in the morning for the group and guide to stock up with supplies for the onward journey. Now we prepare for the game viewing part of the trip. Perched high on our well-equipped vehicle we head north into the wilderness, passing remote villages along the way. We spend five days in these reserves following seasonal game migrations. An example of our route could be: starting with Moremi, camping the first night near the well-known 3rd Bridge. Drift off to sleep to the howl of the Hyena or the earthy roar of a Lion, and even the deep grunt of a half-submerged Hippo. We then head on north via Xakanaxa to camp near North Gate. This area is excellent for game viewing and we will conduct afternoon and morning drives along the wetland areas. Then on up to Savuti, the area offers a multitude of game drive options and a very active campsite (keep the fruit well hidden from the roving Elephant, and the meat from the prowling Hyenas). The vegetation is constantly changing, from open plains, palm trees and marshland, to dense Mopane woodlands and Acacia scrub. Moving into Chobe, famous for its large herds of Elephant, which gather on the flood plains, we spend the morning exploring the banks of the majestic Chobe River. Here we hope to see the Puku, found exclusively on the Chobe flats. We then cross the border to spend the night in comfort at the DRIFTERS VICTORIA FALLS LODGE. B L D ; B L D B L D ; B L D ; B L D

The casual visitor to Botswana could be excused for seeing the country as kilometer upon kilometer of flat,

desolate scrubland with little or no surface water. However, to the north lies the magnificent Okavango waterway, with its green and fertile plains, flowing straight into the sea of sand, the Kalahari Desert, and creating a unique natural wonderland – home to a multitude of Africa’s Fauna and Flora. Almost a quarter of this country is devoted to wildlife sanctuaries and these remote and unspoiled wilderness areas are widely acknowledged as offering the finest game viewing in Africa. We offer two variations of safaris to this area, covering the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, Okavango Delta, Moremi/Chobe, Savuti and Victoria Falls. These tours offer the traveller, photographer, birdwatcher and naturalist the ultimate natural paradise.

Day 1: Johannesburg - NataDeparting from DRIFTERS JOHANNESBURG LODGE at 06h30, we set off for the Botswana border. On completion of Customs and Immigration formalities we head for Nata, an oasis-like camp on the edge of the impressive Sowa salt pan, here we camp the night. Familiarise yourself with the procedures of the tour over a catered meal at the Lodge (own expense).

Day 4 - 7: Okavango DeltaThe Okavango, a massive river spilling its contents into the Kalahari sands, creating one of the world’s only true inland deltas and a unique ecosystem that supports a huge variety of animal and plant life. The sight of a nervous Lechwe pounding across a flooded plain, the Jacana striding delicately amongst the flowering lilies, the Bee Eater diving to prey on an unsuspecting insect, and of course the familiar cry of the African Fish Eagle all combine to create one of nature’s masterpieces. From Maun, we will fly in a light aircraft to the heart of the Delta and will then continue by Mekoro to our exclusive wild camp. We spend three nights in true wilderness, exploring the area on foot and by mekoro - the traditional aquatic mode of transport. There will be time to simply appreciate the remoteness and serenity of the area. Clients will have the opportunity to extend the flight into an extensive game flight over the Delta on either day 4 or 7. Late on day 7 we fly back to Maun and return to the DRIFTERS MAUN CAMP to freshen up before enjoying a catered meal. B L D ; B L D ; B L D; B L D

Day 2: Nata - Makgadikgadi Pans

After a leisurely breakfast we transfer to the 4x4 vehicle for an initial excursion. We then return to our camp for a welcome swim and a bite to eat. Relax for a few hours during the heat of the day before breaking camp and packing up to head down the Maun road to the Makgadikgadi Pans to view these spectacular depressions, known for their prolific birdlife and the other desert adapted animals that they attract. Explore the area for Springbok, Gemsbok and other unique species. Camp wild and take in the isolation and serenity of the star-studded night. B L D

Day 3: Maun(13-day fly-in passengers join today)A leisurely start, after exploring a little more we leave the pans and then drive to the DRIFTERS MAUN CAMP. This camp is situated on the banks of the Boteti River, near Maun, and offers us the opportunity to rid ourselves of the Makgadikgadi dust under a warm shower. In the afternoon we will conduct a walk to a local village for an insight as to how the local inhabitants cope in these harsh conditions. Tonight we enjoy a traditional “braai” before camping the night. B L D

Okavango Delta

Day 13 - 14: Victoria FallsAwaking in the adventure capital of Africa, it is with new excitement that we explore the amazing Victoria Falls,“Mosi o Tunya“, “The smoke that Thunders”. After admiring this wonder of the world, various other places can be visited and activities enjoyed - the tribal village, the big tree, the curio market and the crocodile farm. An aircraft flip over the falls or a boat trip on the Zambezi River, White Water Rafting, Bungee Jumping, or an Elephant Back Safari are all worthwhile, but allowance must be made for the extra expense. We spend three nights at the DRIFTERS VICTORIA FALLS LODGE, thus allowing people the opportunity to explore, either on foot or bicycle, by themselves. Two of the nights we will eat out in local restaurants (own expense). Relax to the sound of the African night and the distant roar of the Falls and drink the farewell toasts to your adventure. B ; B

Day 15: Victoria Falls-NataThe people flying out on the 13-day tour will do so here and overlanders will return to Botswana and complete the triangle back to Nata. Camp for the last time and share your experiences with the next tour just arriving. (Dinner own expense) B L

Day 16: Nata - JohannesburgTransfer back to South Africa to arrive in Johannesburg in the early evening. (All meals own expense)

Drifters, in conjunction with the local community have established four luxury Adventure Camps and

a comfortable Lodge, all spectacularly located along a pristine 100km section of the undeveloped, northern Wild Coast (formerly Transkei). These Camps and Lodge offer the adventurer / explorer the opportunity to enjoy this remote coastline with its endless beaches, warm Indian Ocean, natural estuaries, rolling hills and traditional Xhosa villages, from the comfort of either a self-catering Camp or a fully catered Lodge. All Camps and Lodge are linked by a coastal pathway that forms one of South Africa’s finest nature trails. This path can be used for day walks or can be used to link overnight stays at the various Camps / Lodge to make up a multi day trail. The various trail options also offer mountain bikers the opportunity to explore endlessly and to experience rides ranging from mild to wild.

route guide A crossroads of civilizations, cultures and landscapes, influenced from the early days by nomadic tribes, Arab traders,

British sailors and Portuguese colonials, then torn apart by over 20 years of civil war. With newfound peace, and a fast growing economy recently reopened to tourism, Mozambique offers the explorer a wealth of treasures in the form of untouched wilderness areas, natural beauty, deserted beaches, and unique cultural heritage. This tour combines the well-known attractions of Kruger and Hluhluwe National Parks - where animals abound, living in their natural environment, with the recently initiated Transfrontier Peace Park, and a Swaziland Game Park. The tour will also visit natural and cultural attractions, and will spend time at deserted Indian Ocean beaches. We also visit the capital Maputo, where we experience the almost Latino culture, and enjoy the city. A safari truck is used for this tour, but clients must expect delays, or inconvenience associated with exploring such terrain. Bad roads, flooding rivers and other factors beyond our control may necessitate unplanned adventure, detours, etc. An open mind-set is essential. We may run this tour in the reverse direction on occasion.

track which we follow into the area that forms the Mozambique side of the Transfrontier Peace Park and is privileged to have remained virtually unexplored by humans. The bush is exceptional, and offers areas of exquisite natural beauty and wildlife. The diversity of the flora ensures some of the finest birding in Africa. We will spend the night camping near Massingir Lake and will explore both on foot and by vehicle.

B L D

Day 5 – 6 : Xai – Xai Leaving the Park today, we make our way across the Limpopo flood plains, through numerous villages and finally down to the inviting Indian Ocean. Our stop for the next two nights is at a remote beach resort hidden on the large dune separating the inland fresh water lake system from the pounding ocean. We have a full day to enjoy the surf and to explore the surroundings.

B L D ; B L D

Day 7 – 9 : InhambaneFollowing the coast, we make our way north to Maxixe from where we enjoy a trip with the locals, across the bay on a traditional Dhow while the guide drives around to meet us in the ancient trading port of Inhambane. We spend some time exploring and visiting the bustling local market before continuing to our camp under the Coconut Palms on the beach. We will enjoy three nights in relative comfort, staying in Casitas at this camp on the Barra peninsula. During our time here we will relax, snorkel and soak up the sun whilst exploring the deserted beaches that Mozambique is so well known for. On the last night we enjoy a catered meal (own expense). Those who wish to have the options of scuba diving or horse riding on the beach (own expense). B L D ; B L D ; B L

Day 10 : MaputoWell relaxed and sun-drenched, we return down the coast to the capital Maputo where we spend some time driving around and exploring this once grandiose city. Maputo boasts a Latino culture of street cafés, music and bustling markets. We spend the night in a comfortable hotel. Tonight we will eat in a local restaurant, sampling some of the local seafood (own expense). For the brave, Peri–Peri is a must. B L

Day 11: Swaziland Game Park It is with new excitement that we venture back into the bush. Today we wind our way south and cross into the tiny Kindom of Swaziland. We will spend the entire afternoon exploring one of the game reserves that this area is renowned for and will camp the night. B L D

Day 12 - 13: ZululandReturning to South Africa today, we enter the area once ruled by the famed Shaka Zulu. We will spend two nights at the DRIFTERS ZULULAND CAMP, a rustic camp in the sand forest on our private reserve adjoining Lake St Lucia near Hluhluwe. During our stay we will enjoy game walks through the forest, experience an open vehicle game drive in Hluhluwe National Park and will visit a rural Zulu school which Drifters sponsors through the benefits of tourism. B L D ; B L D

route guide “The Pearl of Africa” - Uganda offers a unique diversity of wildlife, natural beauty, and friendly inhabitants that

all combine to make the country one of Africa’s hidden gems. This tour includes the obvious attractions of trekking in indigenous forests to see wild Gorilla’s and Chimpanzee’s, as well as exploring vast water-ways, mystical villages hidden in mist, and the lesser known sights of Tree Climbing Lions, huge pods of Hippopotamus, and of course the endless variety of plains animals. This tour endeavors to explore the scenic beauty of Uganda, its people, and its wildlife. We will cover approx 2000km, some of it on extremely bad roads but the rewards are unequalled. Weather, road, and other local conditions will influence the route chosen on each tour and we may run the tour in reverse if required, clients should be flexible in this regard. Clients should be equipped with an open mind and a spontaneous disposition in order to best enjoy the superb offerings of Uganda. (Clients fly into / out of Entebbe airport. Transfers and pre / post tour nights can be booked through Drifters for Cassia Lodge near Entebbe or Adrift Camp in Jinja. Meals are available.)

Day 1: Entebbe- Lake Mburo Nat. Park

Departing from Cassia Lodge near Entebbe at 08h00, we make our way through the outskirts of the vibrant capital city – Kampala before starting our journey west. On our route today we will visit the drum market, a fruit market, and we will stop at the Equator. This afternoon we enter the Lake Mburo National Park, known for its plains game and large hippo population – we camp the night on the Lake shore. D

continuing north to the Rwenzori - “Mountains of the Moon”. After setting up camp at a local community center, we will enjoy a lengthy walk through numerous rural villages and up into the forest to the Rwenzori lookout point. Rising some 5000 meters above sea level, the slopes of these mountains are covered in tropical forest and yet the peaks are often snow-capped, a bewildering sight considering their proximity to the equator. B L D

Day 9: Murchison Falls Nat. Park

An early start, we leave the Mountains behind us and descend into the luminous green tea plantations surrounding Fort Portal. We cover vast distance today and mostly on rough roads. Our destination tonight is the Kaniyo-Pabidi camp in Murchison Falls National Park, this camp is managed by the Jane Goodall Institute and provides relatively comfortable facilities. B L D

Day 10: Murchison Falls / Victoria Nile

Early this morning we set off on a guided walk in search of a group of habituated Chimpanzees. We hope to spend an hour with the group before returning to camp. Then its off to Murchison Falls, a narrow gap though which the Nile River falls 40m into the Rift Valley. We will spend some time here exploring the Fall’s. Next we travel downstream to cross the Nile in order to enjoy a game drive in the northern part of the Park. We will camp tonight in a big game area. B L D

Day 11: Ziwa Rhino SanctuaryRising early, we board a boat that will then take us on a leisurely cruise slowly down the Nile River – along the way we hope to catch

Day 2: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

We start the day with a game drive / walk and then exit the park to travel through a landscape of rolling hills littered with banana plantations and herds of impressive long-horned Ankole cattle. This afternoon we travel on rough mountain roads, passing remote villages - often shrouded in mist, toward the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Our camp for the night is at the edge of the forest. B L D

Day 3 - 4: Bwindi Gorilla TrekOn one of these days we will partake in what is undoubtedly the highlight of the tour – Gorilla trekking! We split up into small groups and with local guides, trek up into the forest to locate and spend time with a family of these few remaining wild mountain gorillas. As the gorilla permits are limited we will allow two days for all of the group to partake, should all permits be available on day 4 we would visit Lake Bunyoni on day 3. Whilst not gorilla trekking we will enjoy village walks and will spend time searching for the magnificent birds inhabiting the fringe of the forest. B L D ; B L D

Day 5 - 6: Queen Elizabeth Nat. Park - Ishasha

Leaving the mountains and forests behind us, we drop down to the grasslands of the Queen Elizabeth National Park, here we will spend two nights camping at a remote camp. Besides abundant mammal, reptile, and bird species, Ishasha is renowned for its huge tree climbing lions. We will game drive extensively searching the tall fig trees for lions, and the savannah for other game. B L D ; B L D

Day 7: Queen Elizabeth Nat. Park - Chimpanzees

Packing up camp, we travel the length of the Park and through the Maramagambo Forest where we hope to encounter wild Chimpanzee and an amazing variety of birdlife. Arriving at Kyambura Gorge this afternoon, we have the option of an additional guided Chimpanzee trek here ( own expense). Tonight we camp in the vicinity. B L D

More than just accomodation, Drifters concentrates on the experience, each of our properties is designed in a manner that brings clients directly into contact with the best that the area has to offer, be it wildlife, scenery, the ocean, culture, etc. Our emphasis is always on the environment, and besides those lodges in cities, our properties all offer exquisite natural environments where clients can explore, hike, cycle, etc. or simply relax without restriction. Our commitment to conservation is paramount.

At Drifters properties, our experienced managers and staff will personally host you and will be on hand to offer advice regarding activities and attractions in the respective areas. To create the ideal adventure tour our Drifters properties may be linked to ensure continuity throughout your holiday and our reservations office would be pleased to assist with advice on the different routes and options available.

Group Size & AgeOur group size usually numbers between 6 and 17 clients. By travelling in small groups it means that we don’t invade campsites and can avoid wasting time in constantly having to wait for people. It also enables us to maintain a far more personal service to our clients. From our experience our groups are normally made up of individuals, couples and sometimes groups of friends aged between 18 and 55 years. The sheer physical and youthful mentality which prevails on these tours makes them generally unsuited to anybody over the age of 55 years.

Change of BookingIf, after confirming your booking, you wish to change to an alternative departure date, you may do so subject to availability and by agreement with our booking office. An amendment fee will be charged. Should we not be able to accommodate your request and you therefore must cancel, our usual cancellation procedure will apply.

Exchange Control RegulationsClients must realise that most African countries have certain currency restrictions with which they must familiarise themselves before travelling.

Rescue & Medical AssistanceIn the unlikely event of rescue and medical assistance being needed, other than that provided by DRIFTERS, the participant or his/her insurance company shall be liable for the entire cost thereof.

ParticipationThe degree of satisfaction and enjoyment you feel at the end of each day and the end of the trip will depend on you and your capacity to enjoy yourself. This capacity, combined with an active and enquiring mind and a willingness to participate, is essential for all our tours. If you wish to be pampered and amused with minimal effort on your part, then our tours are not for you. Participation is essential on all trips and everyone is expected to help with chores to ensure the smooth running of the tour. A degree of flexibility is also essential because of the nature of the parameters in which we have to operate.

GuidesOur guides are mature adults who are young at heart and enjoy their work. They are chosen for their personalities, their interest in the environment, their experience and ability to handle people. We have a hard core of full-time guides as well as a pool of good reliable part-timers, all registered with the Field Guides Association of Southern Africa and South African Tourism.

SleepingUsually in tents accommodating two adults. Alternatively we utilise lodges, log cabins, bungalows and rondavels, and under the stars, if desired. Thin sleeping mats are provided, but clients may bring inflatable mattresses for further comfort. Single clients may share accommodation with other clients.

Luggage AllowanceBaggage on all our tours will be strictly limited to one large bag (barrel bag or internal framed backpack), weighing a maximum of 15kgs. We will also allow a smaller hand luggage bag or camera bag per person. In order to prevent complications on vehicles, aeroplanes and boats, this allowance must be adhered to. SUITCASES WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.

Price IncludesWe attempt to make every effort to ensure that our clients are fully aware of what costs are involved in each trip, and to avoid any surprise hidden costs. Our prices include transport for the duration of the tour, accommodation, group equipment (tents, pots, etc.) hire costs (boats, polers, etc.), permits and entry fees, competent professional guides and all food for the duration of the trip (restaurants excluded). The food is healthy and every endeavour is made to suit all tastes, and we make as much use of local produce as possible. We include coffee and tea, as well as fruit juice at breakfast, but all alcohol, soft drinks and bottled water are for your own expense. DRIFTERS do not operate the food kitty system, because this causes delays during the journey while the passengers shop, and is open to misuse. All braais and breakfasts are provided by us but not meals en route to and from the area of the tour. As our programme must be projected so far ahead and our prices are therefore subject to exchange rate fluctuations, we reserve the right to surcharge without notice, although this is against our intentions. Any special extra excursions are for the client’s expense.

Booking ProcedureIf you wish to make a reservation it is advisable first to contact your agent or DRIFTERS to ensure that there is still space available on the particular venture or tour. If so then complete the booking form and send it along with a 10% NON-REFUNDABLE deposit to confirm your reservation. IF THE FULL AMOUNT IS NOT PAID AS STIPULATED BY YOUR AGENT OR PRIOR TO DEPARTURE DATE OF SUCH TOUR/VENTURE, DRIFTERS may, at our own discretion and without notice, be entitled to regard the booking as cancelled and to re-book the vacancy. Late applicants may join tours/ventures on an accommodation available basis.

InsuranceTravel insurance is compulsory and you should arrange such in your country of origin. You should be covered in the event of cancellation or curtailment, death, any medical or rescue expenses, as well as for any loss of baggage, money or personal items. You may contact our office in this regard.

Cancellation ProcedureCancellation of any booking must be received in writing and acknowledged by DRIFTERS. If a booking is cancelled with the consent of DRIFTERS, the latter shall retain the full deposit. Should a person cancel a tour/venture and cannot find an immediate replacement:a) If DRIFTERS has 4 weeks or more notice, only the

deposit is forfeited.b) If DRIFTERS has less than 4 weeks notice, the deposit

and in addition a cancellation fee will be payable by the client as follows: 27-21 days 40% of total fare

20-14 days 60% of total fare 13-0 days 100% of total farec) If you fail to join a tour/venture or join it after departure,

or leave it prior to its completion, no reimbursement whatsoever will be made.

TransportDRIFTERS operate with various brands of trucks, vans, Landcruisers, and Unimogs, all chosen for their practicality and reliability. They seat up to 17 clients depending on the application.

EquipmentSleeping bags are available for purchase.(See booking form)

Spending MoneyEach trip will require differing amounts of pocket money depending on the length of the journey, the individual’s needs and the specific conditions of each tour. Money is needed for meals en route on the first and last day of travelling, curios, alcohol, bottled water and soft drinks, specified restaurant meals, visas, airport taxes, transfers and additional excursions, not included in the tour price. Tipping is a customary practice in Southern Africa.

Kit List & Final InstructionsOn receipt of your deposit we will send you a suggested kit list, which will supply you with a guide as to what to bring along as well as further useful information. You will also receive a receipt confirmation which must be read carefully as it will display both the time and point of departure and return.

Acceptance and Booking ContractA contract between DRIFTERS and the client will only be deemed to be concluded once the client or the client’s agent has received receipted notification from DRIFTERS. Clients will be required to sign an acceptance of contract before starting their tour. The place of conclusion of contract will always be taken as South Africa and any claim or actions brought against DRIFTERS can only be made under South African jurisdiction.

Air TransportDRIFTERS will assist with any flight bookings and arrangements if requested. We will always endeavour to obtain the best prices possible, but we accept no liability regarding delays, cancellations or any other problems in this regard whatsoever. Passenger tickets in use by the specific airline when issued shall constitute the sole contract between the airline and the passenger.

ConditionsDue to the nature of hiking, camping, touring, driving and the general third-world conditions on our tour/ventures, DRIFTERS, their employees, guides and affiliates, do not accept responsibility for any client or dependant thereof in respect of any loss, injury, illness, damage, accident, fatality, delay or inconvenience experienced from time of departure to time of return, or subsequent to date of return, such loss, injury, etc. arising out of any such tour/venture organised by DRIFTERS. Should a tour/venture be cancelled by DRIFTERS due to weather conditions or other reasons, it shall either refund full payment or offer a substitute tour/venture. Should DRIFTERS have to curtail a tour/venture for any reason due to weather conditions or other factors after the time of departure, DRIFTERS will not be liable for any form of refund whatsoever, although everything will be done to complete a tour/venture or to utilise an alternative arrangement or venue. Should a client decide to curtail a tour for any reason whatsoever, DRIFTERS will not be liable for any refund whatsoever. Before departing on a tour, clients will be required to agree to the above conditions and general information.

Game Lodge For the discerning bush lover . . .

Kruger

Drifters also offer the luxury Drifters Game Lodge for the discerning bush lover. However, the Drifters philosophy still stands: an authentic

African experience at a realistic price. Take a few extra days to adjust to the smells, sounds and taste of Africa.

Situated in the 40 000-hectare privately owned Balule Nature Reserve, adjacent and unfenced to the Kruger National park, the Drifters Game Lodge is isolated and intensely close to the magic of Africa. Your expert ranger will teach you about the habits of the lion and the rhinoceros, and how to identify the ferocious little antlion and the giant rhinoceros beetle. For the more adventurous we encourage game walks under the guidance of a ranger or you may choose one of our open-vehicle drives.

Accommodation is in well-spaced luxury, insect-proof suites. Each suite offers the occupants uninterrupted views and the full spectrum of the sounds of the African night without compromising safety. All suites are comfortably appointed with electricity, full bathroom with shower and a private patio overlooking the seasonal Mohlabetsi riverbed. The central lodge building offers broad shady verandas and a comfortable lounge over-looking our rock pool. This feature pool is for those who wish to enjoy a refreshing swim or tan under the African sun.

Animals encountered during your stay are in a totally wild and

natural environment and good game sightings are guaranteed. We are especially proud of our abundant birdlife which is attracted the riverine forest.

Brunch is enjoyed on the veranda after returning from your early-morning activity and dinner is served under the stars in our traditional African boma.

Hoedspruit (Eastgate Airport) or Phalaborwa offer a convenient fly-in or one can drive from Johannesburg in five hours. The Lodge is situated 17km north of Hoedspruit, gateway to the Kruger National Park.

Our package includes: meals, accommodation, game drives, walks and pick-up and drop-off at Eastgate Airport. A full bar service is available.

See page 17 for prices.

Drifters also offer the comfortable Drifters Desert Lodge in southern Namibia, aimed at the self drive market or smaller group-

travellers. Within the Drifters philosophy of offering a unique experience at a realistic price, we encourage you to spend a few days in our desert Eden – game viewing, relaxing, and simply enjoying the remoteness.

Situated on our private 20 000 hectare wilderness reserve within the Namibrand Nature Reserve, the Drifters Desert Lodge is unique in that it offers a game viewing experience and comfortable accommodation whilst being a convenient stop-over between the Sossusvlei Dunes and the attractions of the south – Fish River Canyon and Luderitz.

During your visit you will enjoy walks as well as open vehicle drives both during the day and at night, our ranger will show off the multitude of desert adapted fauna and flora that inhabit the reserve. Animals encountered during your stay are in a totally wild and natural environment, some migratory and some permanent residents.

The Lodge itself offers six spacious, comfortably appointed, en-suite rooms and a generous central lounge / dining area - all built of local stone to ensure warmth in winter and cool in summer. All rooms have a splendid

west facing view over the surrounding desert. A terrace and sparkling swimming pool complete the package.

Meals are freshly prepared and are served either on the terrace or in the dining area - depending on weather conditions.

Being on the C14, approx 100km south of Sesriem and approx 200km north of Aus, Drifters Desert Lodge is easily accessible in two wheel drive vehicles and is just off of the regular “tourist route” - the ideal stop-over.

Drifters package includes meals, a game walk, and an extensive afternoon / night drive on the reserve.

See page 17 for prices.
