Dream of the Shadow Man by Michelle Collier

The year was 1992 and I was laying on my back asleep in my bed. I remember opening my eyes

and I could see that my bedroom door was open and the light was on in the hall.

Suddenly I realized there was a man standing next to my bed. He appeared as a highly defined

black shadow as I could not make out a face or any true definitions besides the fact that in

appearance he had on a trench coat and a hat.

Immediately I was afraid and tried to scream but I could not. I struggled to move my body but I

was paralyzed in some strange way. I have a vague memory of trying so hard to get out of the

bed that I was slightly able to move in slow motion but I could not get out of the bed.

I remember being stricken with terror unlike any experience I've ever had. The fear that gripped

me was so strong, I struggled to say the name Jesus but I couldn't. So I began to think in my

mind, Jesus, Jesus!

Suddenly I was fully awake, still lying on my back and the shadow figure had disappeared. I

noticed that my bedroom door was still open and the light in the hallway was still on.

I thought to myself, was I having a dream or did this really happen?

Accounts of shadow people typically describe them as being black humanoid silhouettes with no

discernible mouths, noses, or facial expressions, though accounts also exist of them being

child-sized humanoids or shapeless masses that sometimes change to a more human like

form. The eyes are usually not described as being discernible but in some reports glowing eyes

are mentioned. The color of the eyes is red. Generally, they are described as lacking mass,

though their specific nature varies from a two-dimensional shadow to a vaporous or distorted

three-dimensional form. Their movement is often described as being very quick and disjointed

they may first move slowly, as if they were passing through a heavy liquid, and then rapidly "hop"

to another part of a witness's surroundings. Some witnesses describe this movement as thoughthe shadow entities they have seen "danced" from one wall to the next, or as moving around the

room "as if they were on a specific track". Often they are described as being seen staring at the

floor. Some accounts describe what appears to be the outline of a cloak, and in some instances

the outline of a 1930s style fedora hat. This last type is referred to by many alleged witnesses on

the Internet as the "hat-man" due to its prevalence among Shadow people sightings.

Hypotheses

Several explanations have been proposed to explain the phenomena of shadow people.

Paranormal

Explanations for shadow people have been drawn from the fields of parapsychology,

metaphysics, cryptozoology, demonology, religion, and the occult:

* A creature/s in an alternate reality whose dimension occasionally overlaps with ours, allowing it

to be partially visible.

* A Manifest Thoughtform (egregore), ghost or demon created through various means, including

negative psychic energy, black magic and other occult practices, or an event in which extreme

emotional or physical stress/trauma has taken place.

* A creature in some way linked to Grey and Reptilian aliens.

* An unattended shadow or shade (mythology), said in some cultures, to be similar to that of a

ghost, a flicker of a life unable to end for some reason.

Scientific

Several non-paranormal hypothesis for the phenomena of shadow people exist, including optical

illusions or hallucinations brought on by the physiological/psychological circumstances of the

witnesses.

Pareidolia

In most instances, witnesses report seeing shadow people in the peripheral areas of their vision.

This area of vision is linked to the areas of the brain that recognizes patterns, however it

provides less detail to the brain than macular (center-forward) vision. This can lead to a condition

known as pareidolia, in which the brain incorrectly interprets random patterns of light/shadow or

texture as being familiar patterns such as faces and human forms. The same condition can also

be observed in macular vision in low light conditions, or when viewing a complex but random

image. A common example would be perceiving a shadow, thrown by an item of furniture in a

darkened room, as being a person.

Hypnogogia

Also known as waking-sleep, hypnogogia is a documented physiological condition in which a

person is part-way between sleeping and waking. During hypnogogia, a person can be

conscious and aware of their environment, but also in a dream-like state where they can

perceive images from their subconscious. People experiencing waking-sleep commonly report

the sensation of lights or shadows moving around them, as well as other visual hallucinations. A

feeling of dread is also a sensation that occurs when experiencing hypnogogia. Hypnogogia is

sometimes known as 'the faces in the dark phenomenon' because those who experience this

state commonly report seeing faces while experiencing waking-sleep. Similar hypothesis have

been put forward linking this condition to a number of other apparent paranormal experiences,

including alien abductions and paranormal nocturnal visitations.

Chemical agents

The use of narcotics and psychotropic agents, including methamphetamine and LSD, can

produce shadow person-like hallucinations. Dopaminergic drugs such as pramipexole can

sometimes cause these hallucinations. Common over-the-counter medication can also have a

similar effect if taken in sufficient quantity (see diphenhydramine and pseudoephedrine).

Electromagnetic fields

Under the right conditions, electromagnetic fields can interfere with the functions of the temporal

lobe creating altered states of perception in which auditory and visual hallucinations can occur.

Using electromagnetic fields, researches have been able to recreate many of the experiences

reported during paranormal encounters under laboratory conditions, including those of shadow

people. Researchers have also documented correlations between variances in

naturally-occurring magnetic fields and areas where paranormal events have been reported.

Neurological conditions

Certain neurological conditions, such as photosensitive complex partial seizures, have also been

shown to cause sufferers to see shadow people.

the same dreams independently of one another. The most recent included the collapse of

a bridge that looked very much like the Bunker Hill bridge in Boston.

crying. He had on a trench coat and a fedora! I tried to tell my parents, but they just told

me it was nightmares. At the time I fully believed they were real and felt helpless because

my parents wouldn't help me. My sister slept in the bed next to me. He never went to her,

and I was paralyzed and couldn't get her attention when he came. I was terrified of him. I

am so shaken up right now. I had convinced myself that it was a dream, but when I saw

this entry, and when you said the shadowy figure had a trench coat and hat, I started toshake and cry uncontrollably. I don't know what to think now.

c. I have been in a similar situation also. My sister slept in the bed next to me and

also never went to her. I also was paralyzed when I saw it but I wasn't scared at

all. It told me things, many of which I can't remember but it was along the lines of

'you need to understand'. Then it touched me on the forehead, my body went coldand everything went dark, I felt like I was enclosed in something. Then I was back

in my room and it was gone, but I could still hear its voice saying 'you didn't see,

you must see'. I was back were I was but it wasn't dark, I was in a coffin and next

to me was a small box with unusual carvings on it. That is all I remember.

h. Have you read Whitley Strieber's "Communion"? He has the exact sameexperience with the being touching his forehead with a wand and having visions.

l. Through a strange series of events, "Communion" was placed into my hands. I

read it and all of his other books on the subject this summer. Reading them, I

began to remember a lot more unusual events and quell my fears, was able to

see the face of the shadow man and yes there was a wand-like device involved.

The box is interesting isn't it? Lately, the name Dolores Cannon has beenemerging through a similar strange series of events, so I began reading her

books. Many of the things I see and remember are being discussed in those

books. It makes you shiver to hear someone else testifying to seeing the exact

same things you have seen. P.S.-It's still Catherine, just changed my user name.

p. stop crying and donot be scared. you have nothing to fear. this happened to me

years ago, when i was in my early or late teens. i was sleeping on the couch in

the living room. i was dreaming but i was also awake. i had 2 views, the 1st was

me laying on the couch, inside my body, the second was me standing up

watching myself sleep on the couch. for some reason i looked over to the cellar

door and this shadow man appeared. he had the fedora and hat. calm down.

donot b scared. my heart skipped a beat when i read the article. well, this shadow

came over and began to choke me. literally. i began to gasp for breathe. for some

reason-which i now know what it is-one thing came to mind. i said the name

JESUS. I woke up immediately.

q. this also happened to me latter on in life, maybe last year. calm down. dont get

scared.

r. i was in bed and i had a dream of me sleeping on a couch, again. i had a feelingthat i was about to has the same expierience as b4. thats when my grandmother

appeared. she had just died that year.

t. My gmom walked over to me, but i knew this wasnt my gmom, the bible tells me

so. i tried calling out JESUS but my words were broken up. no matter how hard i

tried. and i couldnt move. i was paralyzed.

u. i woke up from that dream bcuz i think i did what the person in the article say they

did i thought JESUS.

v. GOD can not only hear our words, but our thoughts and our hearts. The HOLY

SPIRIT helped me on both occassions and THAT'S WHY WE SHOULDNT BSCARED.

w. JESUS is the name above every name. every kneel shall bow to that name. and

every demon cringes from it. so call on JESUS if that thing shows up again.

9. @Catherine Thank you for your comment and for sharing. Its important to me to know

that someone is being moved by the things that I share. I understand much more now

than I did at the time that I had the shadow man experience, and since that time I have

had other experiences as well. What I have learned is we live in a world of many

dimensions with other dimensional beings. This is what you encountered. As you can

see, you are safe and you are protected. In time you will know the full meaning, even as

you know more now. You are not the only one, and you are not alone. These beings want

to interact with us but they are not allowed, they can only stand and watch. However, not

13. Thanks for the encouragement. I've calmed down some. lol. There's been a

development. A few days after I read this blog about the shadow person and being

shaken up by a related childhood memory, I remembered a dream I had about a month

ago. I've only recently connected the dots and seen the similarity.

14. I dreamed I was at my place of work, a school, and a giant blue-gray, triangular ufo flew

over the school. The students and I ran outside. I found some military men who had

some down and were trying to control "the situation." On the ground I saw an alien-type

being that I have seen in many dreams. He's wrinkled like an old man, and he feels very

familiar, like an old friend that I see once every few eons. He is lying on the ground he's a

prisoner of this military unit. The deal is, he was wearing a trench coat and a fedora! I

didn't realize the similarity of this with my childhood experiences until a few days ago. It's

so obvious I feel quite foolish now. In the dream, I lead him through a university campus

trying help him escape the military. This was very similar to another dream I had of the

very same, familiar alien character in which, again, we were trying to hide from military on

a university campus where the university had been militarized. Anyway, interesting

connection, but I still don't know what the heck it all means.

22. I have seen the shadow man with the top hat myself, around the same time in 1992 or

1993. I was standing in my basement at home, I was by myself with my little dog. I wasstanding at the far end of the basement (meaning the stairs going up were on the other

side). I was standing in the living room basement facing the entertainment center

listening to music when suddenly I hear my dog start whining and I turn to look at the dog

and wonder why its whining then the dog takes off running up the stairs, as I watch the

dog go towards the stairs I see the shadow standing there exactly as the picture looks

above and it looked like he was just staring at me. Its been 16 years and I remember it

clearly. When I noticed him standing there I stared for a few seconds and then closed my

eyes tight and opened them and he was gone. I then ran up the stairs and out the back

door like my dog and we both did not enter back into the house until somebody was

26. I also have experienced seeing the shadow man, though not in a dream. Around 1992 or

'93 I was standing in my basement. Nobody was home except me and my little dog. I was

about 14 years old. The stairs going up were at the other end of the room. I was standing

at the wall where the entertainment center was listening to music, and my dog was laying

by my feet asleep. Suddenly my dog started whining and I look down at it and go back to

what I was doing and then my dog keeps whining then takes off towards the stairs and

runs up, as I watch the dog go I see the shadow man standing at the other end of the

room closer to the stairs. At first I seen him peripherally but I turn my head fully and thefigure was just standing there staring at me, I then shut my eyes tight and open them and

he was gone. I felt very strange as if there still was a presence so I ran up the stairs and

out the door just like my dog we stayed outside until somebody got home. Its been 16

years and I remember it like it was yesterday. I don't know if it was the house I grew up in

or if something actually followed me and my sisters but I have experienced almost the

same exact experiences that Catherine had. I was exposed to many paranormal

experiences as a child and became unafraid after I turned 7 years old because I became

curious as to what may have been trying to contact me. Whats strange is that I have

seen it seems both spirits and alien looking beings both in dreams and waking life. Whats

even more strange is that after all of these years that have passed I now have beenhearing about the shadow figure and aliens frequently recently. I must say that it is

somewhat a comfort to know that I am not the only one who's experienced such odd

instances. What does it all mean???

across the street from a corn field into the cemetery... It was the most well defined black

shadow Ive ever seen, it almost looked digital in some way.. then when I got home I

wanted to show my husband what it looked like, that's when I googled black shadow man

and found the pic at the top of your post... I've seen shadows, black and white for many

years now but never this well defined... And I was fully awake, alert and sober :)

40. OMG that picture almost made me sick with the terror that it invoked. I have had the very

imagined burned into my head as long as I can remember. The imgaine of this man

standing next to my bed with me unable to move or cry out is a dream I have had

throughtout my life. I just had the dream a few nights ago. I am shaking as I write this.

The only difference is the figure was more shaded less defined. Wow I feel for anyone

else that see him...sorry everyone.

remember when I had the experience, I felt the same way. Although I was terrified

in the moment because I couldn't move, I was no so shaken afterward. But the

memory always haunted me. I guess that's why I created this page. I am moreintrigued. These experiences have taught me to face my fears and take a harder

look at what we call reality. In all my research, no one has been killed or harmed

45. Seeing this reminds me of a dream/memory from when i was a child i was in a pub withsomeone who i think was my friend when someone came through the door saying a child

was missing we decided to look for ourselves next i know we are in an industrial area a

collapsed bridge behind us like one of those main roads ones and we are looking around

and we hear footsteps and we turn the corner and see him holding the missing little girl

hes like pure black like the outline of a man but no definition hes draining something out of

the girl like an energy we shout at him he looks up and his eyes like burning green he

drops the girl we try to fight him but he brushes off my friend and knocks him to the floor i

punch and kick him nothing works and then he grabs me and my last memory of that

time is intense fear as i look into his eyes

52. When I saw the picture of the hat man It gave me chills. I too saw this image in my

bedroom. I was a preteen at the time. It was standing in my doorway just looking at me. I

knew I was fully awake when I saw it and I was so scared. I thought it was my dad or my

brother at first but why would they stand in total darkness looking at me? I asked both ofthem the next day and they both denied being around my room. I remember this thing

being tall and dark. It was darker then the rest of the house with the lights off. It had on a

hat with a brim. I could not see any facial shapes or eyes. It just looked like a tall skinny

man wearing a hat. I'm 36 now and I still have problems with darkness. I know that this

image will never be forgotten.

57. I experienced a shadow man in my bedroom around twenty years ago with my first wife.

Through the night I awoke and standing right next to my bed beside my head was a tall

dark silhouette figure wearing a hat. My reaction was to roll over and pull the covers up

over my head and go back to sleep. In the morning, having a cup of tea in bed, I

mentioned to my partner that a strange thing happened - I started to tell the story and she

stopped me and related what happened to her through the night. Exactly the same

experience but on her side of the bed. Our respective hair stood on end! This was in a

18th century coach house that I lived in and always considered the person to be an old

coach man perhaps - the hat? I also wondered if this was an experience of telepathy of a

dream between each other. Looks like it was a shadow person - descriptions above are

almost identical.

was real and that your recollection is from in between dream states. So you

caught a snapshot of what was literally happening on the astral realm with yourspirit eye. Your wife saw this too. The presence woke you both up. You were not

dreaming. However, I have shared dreams with my significant other, where we

both had extremely similar experiences. In my case, it was definitely a dream. In

my dream his brother came onto me and I slapped him. In his dream I came onto

his brother LOL! My sense is that I picked up on his insecurities and it played out

situations like these. However its my knowledge of the subject in question and my

ability to see the other side that I believe otherwise. I will go on to say that if it were

simply sleep paralysis, then the topic can simply be dismissed. However, if we

are having encounters with beings from another dimension, then that has a lot to

68. As creepy as it sounds I didn't mind the shadow figure and wasn't frightened at all when I

saw it. I saw it twice. One of those you wake up into another dream deals. Anyways, the

first time i was sleeping at my fathers apartment when I got the feeling of a presence so I

woke up, and looked to see who was around and as the description says the figure was

jet black but still like a shadow with the coat and hat and moved slow until it got to the

stairs. Figuring someone just broke into our house I was pissed and ran out after him, I

even remember being self-conscious about running in my boxers outside, then as I lookaround I had friends from both of my parents area's there and this figure would come in

and take some down and leave some. I thought he was killing them so I got really pissed

and yelled "stop, come at me." Then I woke up again at my mothers house to see that

same figure standing right within inches of the side of my bed looking at me, even though

I couldn't see his eyes. I instantly threw off my covers and was getting ready to punch

him and run. As I threw my covers off my body to get a good swing I was stopped mid

way of a left hook. Then I got a complete sense of relief. And I live my life through the way

I feel and everything about this feeling was right. I don't know exactly what was said but it

was something like don't worry, you will be fine. As someone said before he reached

down and touched my forehead. Then I finally awoke to reality and realized I was freezing

because all my covers were thrown off just like the dream. This happened In my early

teens as well and even though I am only 20 now all the friends that "died," aren't in my

world anymore for many reasons. Now I don't know if it is coincidence or not, but thereare definitely a lot of interesting similarities between stories. And for all those who just

toss this stuff aside I've had another shadow figure wake me up before, on purpose, the

night my grandfather died, and I lived with him from 4 to the day he died, pull me a long

from my bed to the stairs and say to me "look I'm sorry but he has past and everyone

who ment something to him is here, so I wanted you here, too." I visually remember my

aunt, my uncle, my neighbor from down the road, and at least 14 other shadowy figures

just standing around him. then the figure with me said, "Don't worry he is fine go up and

don't worry about him." then I went back to bed. When I awoke the next morning, figuring

it was just a dream, I ran downstairs in my school gear ready for school to figure out he

really died. I also have another with my recent cousin being born, hundreds of miles awayfrom me, and me shooting up from my sleep in my little rented in cottage in Michigan with

the thought "a baby important to me is being born right, now" but since I smoke so much

weed now-a-days the dreams are blurrier.

73. Recently I was attacked by a bunch of hood rats (mugging), I was outnumbered and

getting battered, during the event I calmly thought "is this how it ends?" I became dizzy nstarted to pass out, as I dropped I noticed that my assailants were kinda frozen and

vibrating with a fearful expression on their faces, something grabbed me from behind and

dragged me away with such velocity as I lost conciousness, when I came to I was

across the road from the hospital, I looked around and saw a group of flat black flitting

away along a wall, I looked around to determine if there were people but nobody was

there.

those thugs. I've always been into other worldly phenomena and had this pet theory of

"shadow tools/ morphic objects" from a very young age and became extremely

fascinated by these shadow beings after being supposedly rescued by them. Maybe they

don't want to reveal their secrets directly. I always have odd dreams that I can't decypher

through dream books, like you said I'm on some kind of path but I haven't worked it out

yet.
