Coolkit A: Basic Literacy & Numeracy

YOU ARE INVITED!Children and other family members are invited to lend a hand in making India literate. This Coolkit can be used to teach one or several learners at the same or at different times.

This Coolkit contains sufficient material to cover three main objectives of literacy and numeracy: Reading, Writing and Arithmetic.

There is no quicker way to make a person literate. A learner starts to read two-letter words from the first day itself. This motivates him / her to continue learning. Most learners can learn to read in 20 to 30 sessions of 15 minutes per day. They can read a newspaper, sign, write name and often much more. Another 10-15 hours of time investment can make a learner numerate.

Global Dream Coolkits are available in several Indian languages and a free mobile app will be downloadable soon.

There is no better way to serve. Research shows students who engage in service learning with real-life experiences improve in academic performance; they become more responsible, better appreciate values such as respect and responsibility, and learn other valuable life skills.

REGISTER YOURSELF AND YOUR LEARNERSRegister yourself and your learner as soon as possible by calling, SMS or online (see information on the back). Request a NLM or third-party evaluation when the learner is ready.

CERTIFICATES Your learner will get a certificate of becoming literate and numerate at the Basic Level and you too will get a certificate as a Leader of Change. The certificate will mention the number of learners that you taught.

Share your story by sending entries from your portfolio, your photo, about your learners and your feelings that you wish to share with the world. These you can post on www.rotaryteach.org.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS1. Do not use the old ways of teaching and

learning that you are familiar with. Global Dream is a much faster learning process if you teach it the way it is meant to be taught.

2. Show extreme respect for the learner. Go by the convenience of the learner and respect the timings you give him / her.

3. Before you begin teaching, ensure you have

taken a pre-test. 4. You do not need to spend more than 15-30

minutes with the learner each day, unless both of you are enjoying the process. Go slow initially, then speed up as the learner gains confidence. Make every session a joyful experience for both you and the learner.

5. TEACH IN ORDER as suggested by the order of books: READING is taught first. When READING is mastered (in about three weeks), you can teach WRITING. However, you can teach the learner how to write name and make a signature as early as possible. NUMERACY can be taught along with READIND and WRITING but your sessions will need to be longer (45 minutes to 1 hour). Aim to teach all three objectives within two months, ideally within six weeks. Plan well and avoid gaps in learning as they may lead to

lowering of motivation or drag out learning.6. Think of ways to keep yourself and the learner

motivated as learning can be difficult for a person who has never had the opportunity to learn.

7. The goal is to teach a learner to the level of mastery so that they can take the National Literacy Mission Exam or be evaluated by a third-party. Both you and the learner will then get a certificate. Literacy has tremendous benefits for the learner. Do not give up along the way!

METHODOLOGY1. Teach backwards from pictures and not

letters. Take two or three pictures and form a word that makes sense to your learner.

2. The learner already knows the picture. Ask him/her, "What is the first sound in that picture?" The learner can also tell you the first sound, for example, 'aa' in 'aanar'. Then

introduce the letter for that sound. This the learner does not know. Thus, go from the known to the unknown.

3. Hide the picture portion and have them read the words, followed by other two letter words at the bottom of the page.

4. The first lesson is the hardest to teach and to learn. But after that, the learner begins to decode the lessons largely by themselves.

5. Play the games as suggested after each lesson. This will consolidate learning and make learning more joyful.

6. BE PATIENT. It is very important they don't

learn like a parrot and repeat after you. Give your learner plenty of time to think before answering yourself. This will allow him to make the mind connections that are most essential in the Global Dream learning process.

7. If you do as suggested, you will find the learner being able to understand the process of learning expected of him / her from the first session itself.

8. Consolidate each lesson before you move over to the next. When you come back the next day, start each new session by going over what they learned the previous day.

9. Lend the learner this book if they request. Otherwise, it can stay with you. They have enough homework already with the mind-connections that they will be making after each lesson. These abstractions are necessary part of learning and do not require books.

In Lesson 5, the learner will learn the following additional letters:

GAMESŸ Cut out all the picture and letter cards

provided. Put them in separate ziplock bags or transparent boxes.

Ÿ Take out just the number of cards you will need for each lesson. Each game below will therefore consolidate the lesson just taught.

Ÿ When you have done more than one lesson, you can start with the picture and letter cards of just that lesson, then add the picture and letter cards of one or all previous lessons. This will consolidate and revise all the previously covered letters as well.

GAME 1: Ask the learner to match pictures with letters. Do not help. Give plenty of time for the

learner to discover and find the solutions him/herself. Set pictures in one row. Set letters in another row. Go picture wise and ask the learner to identify which letter goes with each picture. Dictate words and let the learner find both picture and letter cards that match that word.

GAME 2: Ask the learner to make words from the first lesson, exactly the same way as in the book, that is, show the pictures and the corresponding letters for each word. They can start with the open book, then without the book. Let the learner match picture and letter cards to make each new word.

GAME 4: Play a memory game. Take out picture and letter cards for a lesson (or more once you have taught more lessons) and keep them upside down in jumbled order. Pick out two cards at random. Turn them around to see if they match (picture with letter representing its first sound). If they don't match, put them back upside down. If they match, set them aside on your side. Take turns to pick out the two cards. The person who collects the most

pairs, wins! Repeat the same activity by adding cards from each new lesson. In the end, you will have the opportunity to play with all picture and letter cards. GAME 5: Invent your own game!

Till now the learners have been taught letters backwards from words. This page presents opportunity for you to share the varnmala. Let your learner know how letters are given in a

certain order in the varnmala. This is useful when we need to look up a dictionary which is always given in the same sequence of letters.

BASIC LITERACY

Literacy, defined as the ability to read and write, is the first step in education. Most individuals already know how to speak. Yet, so many individuals remain disadvantaged their entire life simply because they cannot read, This is most unfortunate also because it is very quick and easy to teach anybody to read, especially by using these uniquely designed and research-based Global Dream Coolkits.

Global Dream Coolkits make it possible for a volunteer (young or old) to teach anyone, at anytime and at any place convenient to both the learner and the volunteer.

The target learner is an illiterate person 15 or 15+ or a child out of school whose reality does not permit him / her to attend school (8-14). Please encourage out of school children to go to school. Adopt at least one learner who is 15 or 15+.

After completing this Coolkit, a learner can become fully functional in the definition provided by UNESCO and by the National Literacy Mission. S/he is able to:

1. Read a newspaper2. Sign, write name and much more3. Do simple arithmetic (numbers, +,–, x, and ¸) 4. Understand quantities and read time and calendar

After completing Coolkit A, a learner is qualified to take the NLM Basic Literacy Examination or a third-party evaluation which is considered equivalent to Class III. Further Global Dream Coolkits prepare learners to Class V level.

FASTEST WAY TO LEARN

Global Dream is an accelerated learning program as it is built on worldwide research and evidence, such as increasing thinking time that improves learning outcome. Mind connections based on visualisation make learning even more effective. A learner goes from the known to the unknown and from concrete to the abstract. A learner thus starts to read two-letter words from the first day itself. This motivates the learner to continue learning. This makes Global Dream the fastest literacy program there is.

Benefits to the Learner

n Counters Fear. Most illiterates are fearful of being cheated.

n Makes Better Informed Citizens. Learners can read a newspaper and participate better in democratic processes.

n Boosts Self-esteem. Learners begin to believe they are capable of learning. This propels them forward in a myriad ways.

n Other Benefits Include: Reduces population growth and infant mortality, improves child and maternal health, more children join school, families and next generations benefit especially when a woman becomes literate. A Cambridge University 2014 study shows that a mere 4% increase in literacy has the same impact as 25% increase in personal income.

We thank you for your hardwork and we wish you all the best in your endaeavour to reach out to and make one person at leastliterate, and thereby make a tremendous contribution towards making India literate.
