Dragonmarks of Eberron

Magic is the lifeblood of Eberron, encircling it like the Ring of Siberysand seeping up through the earth fromthe bones of Khyber. Perhaps theclearest manifestation of this pervasivemagic is the appearance ofdragonmarks among seven of

Khorvaire’s common races. Dragonmarks are elaborate skinpatterns—more intricate and colorful than birthmarks, moredistinctive than any tattoo—that also grant their bearersinnate spell-like abilities. There are twelve families ofdragonmarks, each one associated with a number of closelyrelated manifestations. A thirteenth mark, the Mark of Death, has faded from history, and no living creature on Eberroncarries it.

To possess a Dragonmark the character must select theDragonmark as a feat during an Ability Score Improvment forthier class. All the regular rules for feats apply.

When it is used, a character’s dragonmark grows warm tothe touch. It becomes fever hot when its spell-like abilities areused up for the day, and must be allowed to cool before itspower can be drawn upon again.

Aberrant DragonmarkPrerequisite: Dragonmarked raceAntirequisite: Cannot take the Dragonmark or SiberysDragonmark feats

Although you are not a recognized member of one of thedragonmarked families, you have manifested a dragonmark.

On the surface, aberrant dragonmarks are simliar to thiertrue dragonmark counterparts. It appears as a mark on theskin that grows warm when its ability is used. The design ofthe mark is a sinuous pattern of lines, often with a vaguelydraconic shape. While true dragonmarks have a standardform, no two aberrant marks are identical. They come in awide range of colors, including oily black, blood red, and vividgreen.

When a character chooses this feat both the player and theDM should discuss the idea. How does the player want themark to affect the cahracter's life? Does he like the notion ofbeing an outcast, feared for who he is? Or does he simplywant to be able to use shield as innate spellcasting? If themark is hidden and holds passive powers it is possible tominimize the impact of the abberrant dragonmark. Howeverprejudice towards abberrant dragonmarks are in full forceamong the dragonmark houses, so there will tend to be clearconsequences with carrying an abberrant dragonmark.

When you first take this feat you gain the Least AbberrantDragonmark and may choose one spell from the list.At 7th level and higher, your abberrant mark becomesmore potent, improving to a Lesser AbberrantDragonmark. You choose one spell from the list.At 12th level and higher, your mark powers increase again, becoming a Greater Abberrant Dragonmark. DragonmarkAntirequisite: Cannot take the Abberrant Dragonmark orSiberys Dragonmark feats

Dragonmarks are elaborate skin patterns—more intricateand colorful than birthmarks, more distinctive than any tattoo—that also grant their bearers innate spell-like abilities. There are twelve families of dragonmarks, each oneassociated with a number of closely related manifestations.True dragonmarks have a standard form. Two characters withthe Lesser Mark of Passage have exactly the same deisgn ontheir skin, though the location of the mark on the body will bedifferent, and each mark is drawn in lines of vivid blue andgreen.

You have a magical mark that indicates you are a memberof one of the dragonmarked houses. The dragonmark is amystic birthmark that grants you your family’s hereditarymagical powers. When it is used, a character’s dragonmarkgrows warm to the touch. Favored in HousePrerequisite: Any Dragonmark or Siberys Dragonmark feat

Your family is influential and powerful, and you have theability to call in favors from other members of your family andtheir extensive contacts. By making a favor check (see below),you can call upon contacts to gain important information.Favors can also be used to acquire the loan of equipment ordocuments from influential acquaintances.

To call in a favor, you make a favor check of a d20 plus yourproficiency bonus. The DM sets the DC based on the scope ofthe favor being requested; it can range from 5 for a simplefavor to as high as 25 for highly dangerous, expensive, orillegal favors. You can not reroll the check for the same (orvirtually the same) favor. Favors should help advance the plotof an adventure. A favor that would enable you to circumventan adventure will always be unavailable to you, regardless ofthe result of a favor check.

You can try to call in a favor a number of times per weekequal to one-quarter your character level, rounded down(minimum one). You can never ask for more than one favorfrom any one contact in a given week. For instance, at 7thlevel you can try to call in a favor as many as three times perweek, but each attempt must involve a different contact fromamong those associated with your mercantile house.

The DM will carefully monitor your use of favors to ensurethat you don’t abuse this ability. The success or failure of amission shouldn’t hinge on the use of a favor, and calling infavors shouldn’t replace good roleplaying or the use of otherskills. The DM may disallow any favor he or she deemsdisruptive to the campaign.

Greater DragonmarkPrerequisite: Any Dragonmark feat

With a greater dragonmark feat, the size and power of yourdragonmark increases. You will gain additional castings ofthe spell(s) you have available. Additionally, the DC of yourDragonmark spells will increase by +1.

For those with the Dragonmark and Siberys Dragonmarkfeats, the increased power of your dragonmark will tend tobring increased attention, control and focus from yourparticular dragonmark house.

The increase in castings will happen at different timesbased on the type of dragonmark.

Siberys Dragonmark18th level One additional casting per long rest of yourSiberys Dragonmark spell

Siberys DragonmarkPrerequisite: 12th level or higherAntirequisite: Cannot take the Abberrant Dragonmark orDragonmark feats

The people of Khorvaire have a limited understanding ofdragonmarks, and Siberys marks are a complete mystery. The magic of a Siberys mark is undeniably powerful, generally duplicating a powerful spell. Siberys marks areclearly related—visually, thematically, and genetically—to theother marks in their house. A dragonmark heir may spendyears perfecting and mastering the powers of his mark, butcan never manifest a Siberys mark, while an unmarked scionof a dragonmarked house might suddenly display a Siberysmark against all expectations. Siberys marks are mighty, unpredictable, and rare, and the dragonmarked houses keepa careful eye on anyone who manifests one. If its power canbe used in the service of the house, fine—but an heir ofSiberys who does not conceal his dragonmark ability orremain firmly aligned with his house is likely to find himselfthe target of assassins.

Siberys Dragonmarks are like normal Dragonmarks inappearance; however, they generally cover nearly the entirebody of the person that has the Siberys Dragonmark.

Siberys Dragonmarks only appear under situations ofextreme stress. As such when this feat is taken a SiberysDragonmark will not appear right away. Work with your DMor communicate with them, for them to work in a situationthat creates extreme stress for your character under whichthe Siberys Dragonmark will suddenly manifest.

When choosing this feat, choose one of the spells availablefrom the list for a particular dragonmarked house.Spell DC is equal to 10 + proficiency bonus + abilitymodifier listed.

CreditsThis is not for sale and shouldn't be as it's Homebrewmaterial, so don't be an ass hat.

Done by Freewolf (/u/Freewolf).

Praise be the master for creating The Homebrewery.

I created these feats to model the Dragonmarks for 5E fromthe 3.5E Eberron Campaign Setting.

While Unearthed Arcana had an option for dragonmarks asfeats, I wanted to give them a little more umph to entice myplayers into using them for my Eberron campaigns. I wantedto model the selection of different spells, so mostDragonmarks have a spell selection. I also added a skillproficiency to model the original bonus that was given with askill for having a Dragonmark.

Since 5E might not be going the route of presitge classes, and because of the general lack of power with the Heir ofSiberys, I made a Siberys Dragonmark as a feat. These werevery hard to model, as at least half the spell options from 3.5Eare not spells available in 5E. I did the best that I could andwhat made sense to me. I am open to feedback for anyonethat has any other ideas.

Finally, Aberrant Dragonmarks where slightly difficult tomodel. As half the spells available for selection in 3.5E are notavailable in 5E, as well as there not appearing to by anyrhyme or reason for the particular spells that were offered, soa lot of this was flavor based. The progression of Least ->Lesser -> Greater I made to higher levels to denote the rarityof Lesser and Greater Aberrant Dragonmarks, as well thegeneral higher level of the spells available.
