3Try nipping the tail off the end of a lobworm. Insert your hook through this end because perch tend to attack this area first. Scent is an important ‘fish sense’.

4Big carp can be caught in Winter but they often sit midwater and bottom baits can be useless. Always try a rod with a small ‘zig rig’ – keep the bait small, the hook small, and the line fine.

5When feederfishing, keep experimenting with hooklengths. One of 2ft is a good place to start but be prepared to shorten if the fish are really on the feed or lengthen if it’s slow.

2Luncheon meat is a tried and trusted big barbel bait but sometimes the fish get bored of seeing the same thing all the time. Try adding flavour and colour to your meat to make it stand out.

6Perch have huge mouths so be prepared to give them a substantial bait! Try two lobworms, or two halves of a lobworm. But remember you’ll need to step up hook size to a 6 or a 4.

7At this time of year, town centre canals and drains can provide exceptional roach fishing. The fish move into these areas because the water is often slightly warmer.

8One way of ensuring a worm stays on the hook is to tip it off with a red maggot. This has the added bonus of offering further attraction to species like perch and tench.

1Prawns are an outstanding bait, particularly on venues where the fish have seen more traditional offerings. Use cooked and peeled prawns. Perch love ‘em!

16When piking, try inducing a take by twitching your deadbait. If it’s been sat in the water for more than 15 minutes, give the reel handle a couple of turns – it might just spark a pike into taking. tactic.

15If you’re fishing a quiet stretch, feed numerous different swims. When you’ve fed the last one, drop into the first spot you prepared and then fish each in turn until you get bites.

14Baitdroppers are essential for accurate feeding on rivers. Load them up with hemp, pellets, corn, maggots, casters or broken boilies and lower or cast them into place.

13If you’re legering on big, fast-flowing rivers then try and keep as much line out of the water as you can. Point the rod tip skywards and prop up with tall bank-sticks.

12Casters can often pick out the bigger fish when you’re trotting for roach but false bites can be an issue if you’re tripping bottom and snagging up. Beat this by burying your hook inside.

11Perch are rarely solitary feeders and will hunt in packs. If you catch one, be quick to get your bait back in the water. This applies when using lures or when bait fishing.

10A popped-up lobworm is visually striking and a great bait for perch. Pop up a worm by injecting air into one end with a syringe. Do this carefully and it must be done by an adult.

9Line twist can be a pain, especially when using a long hooklength. Incorporate a small match swivel between mainline and hooklength to stop this happening.

20Don’t always use tubing or leaders – in underwater tests fish seem to spot them. Keep it simple and try to use less rig components. It can get more bites from wary fish like carp.

19You’ll be amazed at the amount of different species that have a predatory instinct. As an experiment, try legering a small deadbait, or half a deadbait on your lake.

18A good trick when fishing for chub is to feed white maggots and a sprinkle of reds and then fish a red maggot on your hook. This can trigger a reaction as it may stand out in the crowd.

17Wheat is one of the most neglected of all seed baits, yet it is very cheap and is good for a whole range of species. Soak the seeds for 24 hours and then boil for around 10 minutes.
