About Chapel by the Lake (CBTL)

DRAFT 4/29/20

The historical roots of CBTL are anchored deep in a people’s commitment to their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It began with a group of women, the “Chapel ladies,” in 1936 who organized a Sunday school for children. The first church services were held in the basement of an old house on the property. The first church building was built from logs cut down and donated from the nearby Boy Scout property. It stands today as our Log Chapel and is still used for worship services as well as being a tourist and wedding destination. As the church membership grew, the facilities and outreach expanded.

Today, we are a congregation of over 400 covenant partners with an average of 250 worshipping on a typical Sunday across three services. The estimated median age of congregants is 50, and overall the demographics are less diverse than the community at large.

We are a member of the Alaska Presbytery (https://www.eco-pres.org/presbyteries/presbytery-of-alaska/), which includes six congregations mainly in Southeast Alaska and one congregation in Anchorage. Many of these churches have long been supported by CBTL and exist in small Alaska communities.

During the COVID-19 public health crisis, we have

• Streamed and pre-recorded services to watch on our Facebook page.

• Posted devotionals for youth and adults and provided Godly Play videos and readings of children’s bible stories.

• Broadcast our Easter Service over the radio in partnership with our local radio station.

• Delivered DVDs of the services to our local assisted living home.

• Coordinated a response through our Deacons to meet the physical and spiritual needs of our church family.

We are confident that God is doing a good work in this time of change!

Core Values:Over the past year in conjunction with the pastor search process, CBTL has engaged in a discernment process with the whole congregation to determine where God is calling us to focus and what our core values are. These values build on the Vision Frame. Although all the core values, represented on the wheel below, are important, we feel called as a congregation to focus on the four highlighted at the present:

• Preaching/Teaching• Discipleship• Praise, Worship• Fellowship/Community

CBTL Vision Frame and Core ValuesCBTL went through a long-range planning process that involved reading the book Church Unique, culminating in the adoption of our current Vision Frame in 2018. The Vision Frame Strategy represents our guiding principles.

“Instead, speaking the

truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the

mature body of him who is the head, that

is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by

every supporting ligament, grows and

builds itself up in love, as each part does its

work.”

Children’s Ministry

Children’s ministries at CBTL are designed to provide a variety of options for families to worship, learn and grow in fellowship. This includes Sunday school for preschool and up, Godly Play during the 11:15am service, AWANA’s on Wednesday nights and Vacation Bible School in the summer.

CBTL Discipleship

Adult Ministry

In addition to the intergenerational opportunities with the youth, CBTL’s adult ministry mainly occurs in the form of small groups. There are men’s and women’s specific bible studies, a mother and daughter small group, among others. On Sunday mornings, CBTL also hosts “Chapel Chats,” which covers a range of practical and theological topics.

Youth Ministry

The Director of Youth Ministries oversees the programming and fellowship for our middle schoolers and high schoolers. Chapel Youth ministries is much bigger than just our youth group nights on Wednesdays, Sunday school, and mission trips; it happens over texts, weekly social media devotionals, or around a fire. Chapel Youth’s purpose is to invite students into a welcoming safe place and into a relationship with God that transforms their lives, giving them hope and a heart to love one another.

Voted America’s most outdoorsy state capital, Juneau boasts some of the most beautiful natural landscapes in the nation—glaciers, rivers, mountains, and lakes. See for yourself by clicking here!

With a population of 32,000 and the third largest city in Alaska, Juneau is a coastal town set in a temperate rain forest—think moderate temperatures and lots of rain, no igloos. Juneau can only be reached by boat or plane because of the icefields and ocean surrounding it.

Long summer days (sunrise at 3am, sunset at 11pm) means lots of hiking, fishing, boating, camping, and every other way to explore God’s natural creation. Long summer days means short winter days (sunrise at 9am, sunset at 3pm) with mixed snow and rain--plenty of time to ski, hunt, snowshoe, and do some winter cabin camping.
