I hope everyone enjoyed a well-deserved break and you were able to take time for those things you enjoy. Although it seems early, it is this time of year we start to plan for our new Primary students who will be coming to school in Septem- ber. Students must turn five before December 31, 2019 in order to register for the upcoming school year. Also, if you know of anyone who has a child, who would not receive our newsletter, please let them know as well. An important date to remember is our Primary registration day on February 5. You will be given an appointment time for that date when you call the office. Ear- ly registration is very important because staffing for the next year’s classes is used with these numbers in mind. I would also like to remind parents that all students are outside at lunch time for approximately twenty minutes thus it is very im- portant that all students are properly dressed for the cold winter weather. Students should wear snowsuits or snow pants, winter boots, mitts or gloves, hats and scarves. A change of clothes that could be left at school is also appreciated. I wish you all a happy and healthy 2019 and, as always, please call or visit the school should you have any concerns Lee Ann Stacey Principal IMPORTANT DATES Dr. W.A. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parent/Guardian(s): Welcome back and Happy New Year! I hope everyone enjoyed a well-deserved break and you were able to take time for those

things you enjoy.

Although it seems early, it is this time of year we start to plan for our new Primary students who will be coming to school in Septem-ber. Students must turn five before December 31, 2019 in order to register for the upcoming school year. Also, if you know of anyone who has a child, who would not receive our newsletter, please let them know as well. An important date to remember is our Primary registration day on February 5. You will be given an appointment time for that date when you call the office. Ear-ly registration is very important because staffing for the next

year’s classes is used with these numbers in mind.

I would also like to remind parents that all students are outside at lunch time for approximately twenty minutes thus it is very im-portant that all students are properly dressed for the cold winter weather. Students should wear snowsuits or snow pants, winter boots, mitts or gloves, hats and scarves. A change of clothes that

could be left at school is also appreciated.

I wish you all a happy and healthy 2019 and, as always, please

Inclement Weather Procedures

Occasionally, weather conditions can impact school bus service and school operations –

especially in the winter.

When it is stormy or road conditions are poor, Chignecto-Central Regional Centre for

Education Transportation Services staff starts the day before 6:00 a.m. by:

Reviewing weather forecasts from different sources, for various areas within the four families of schools.

Talking with the local Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal depots.

Talking with bus drivers from various communities throughout the region.

Driving on sections of roads.

Based on the forecast, actual weather and road conditions in each area, the Chignecto-Central Regional

Centre for Education has the following choices:

Maintain bus and school operations as usual.

Maintain bus services on paved roads only, or cancel bus services.

Close schools.

As the Chignecto-Central Regional Centre for Education region is large, separate cancella-

tion and closure decisions are made for each of the four families of schools.

Cancelled Bus Services and School Closures

When it is stormy or road conditions are poor, make sure school is open and busses are running before you

send your children to the bus stop or bring them to school.

The best way to find out if buses are cancelled or if schools are closed is to monitor the local radio or televi-sion stations and the school board website, Twitter feed and Facebook page. CCRCE makes every effort to contact local media by 6:30 a.m. to make the appropriate announcements, as well as to post the information

to our website and social media pages.

Closure and cancellation notices are sent to:

All local radio and television stations within CCRCE.

CBC radio in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.

CFCY radio in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

If there are cancellations within the region, the green "schools open" link on our website will be changed to red and will read "schools closed". By clicking on this link you can access up-to-date information regarding closure

and cancellation information.

If you are a Twitter or Facebook subscriber, we strongly encourage you to "Like" CCRCE's Facebook page

and to follow CCRCE on Twitter (@CCRCE_NS) so that you will be alerted to the latest updates.

We ask that parents, guardians and students avoid calling schools on storm days, whenever possible.

School Closures During the Day

CCRCE rarely cancels school mid-day due to weather or road conditions. However, there may be other fac-

tors, such as power outages, that may result in a school closing unexpectedly during the day.

In case school closes early, CCRCE recommends parents and guardians keep their contact information up-to-

date with schools and have alternate arrangements in place for their children.

Should a mid-day closure occur, parents/guardians will be notified either directly (in the case of elementary

schools), via local media, our website and social media.

Exploratories

Students from Dr. W. A Macleod will be participating in Explorato-ries in the afternoons of January 17th, 24th and 31st. During the Exploratories, students will either learn a new skill or activity, or provide a service for others. Some examples of the Exploratories for this session will be Yoga, Ukulele, Baseball Skills, Service to

Seniors, Watercolor Painting and others.

Prior to Christmas Break we received a donation to our Breakfast Program from Jacob & Sophia Bezanson’s mother, Lisa. Lisa works at Sobeys Head Of-fice and received a $25.00 gift card as an “Act of Kindness” and she wanted to donate it to our breakfast program. We also received, through our staff mem-ber, Tessa MacMillan and her partner, Dane Marshall another “Act of Kindness”

$25.00 Sobeys gift card which will go towards helping families in our area.

We would also like to thank Calvin Ladies Aid, Golden Links UCW, St. Columba United Church, Chester Dewar, and East River Valley Community Development Association and United Church of Canada Hopewell, Eureka, East River Pastoral

Charge, Stellarton Lions Club, Eureka Fire Dept as well as an anonymous donor. These generous donations helped

cover our Christmas Brunch and help some families in our area have a little more at Christmas!

Thank you! All the donations were greatly appreciated!

Christmas Brunch

Thank you to all the volunteers who served and helped out with our Christmas Brunch. It was delicious and enjoyed by all! Thank you to everyone who helped prepare and

serve the meal.

CHRISTMAS CONCERT

Our grades primary to six students had their Christmas concert on Wed. Dec. 19th. The concert was one of the

highlights for our last week prior to Christmas Break! Thank you to Mrs. Alcorn-Martin for all her hard work in

preparing the students for the concert!
