Issue 14 Autumn Term Friday 18th December 2015 Dear parents and carers, Term ends on Friday aſternoon and we are all looking forward to a much needed break from the rigours and demands of school. I hope that you too will enjoy a peaceful and refreshing break whether you celebrate Christmas or not. On Tuesday the primary phase celebrated the fesve season with the annual Navity Play; it was a delighul event and it was good to see so many parents in the audience. It requires a huge amount of effort from the children to learn all the words of the songs and to remember all of the drama and I would like to thank the Head of Primary, Mrs Franciosa for this splendid occasion. The work with the children was led by Miss Jordan, Miss Avabile, Miss Bayram and Mrs Ahmet. We will be saying farewell to Mr Andrew Marn, Assistant Head (Sixth Form) as he leaves us to take up a post for Herordshire Council responsible for Looked Aſter Children. We will be very sorry to see him leave as he has made a valued contribuon to the work of the Middle Phase and also to the teaching of History and the development of our Sixth Form. We also say good bye to miss Mai-Wenn Van Zuijdam as she leaves us to take up a post at Queen’s Gate school in Kensington. We thank her for her commitment to our school over the past four years and wish her well as she pursues her career in Modern Language teaching. Next term sees the return of Mrs Elena Christou aſter her period of maternity leave and we thank Mr Marius Focsan for his work teaching Art whilst she was on leave. We also welcome back Mrs Androulla Athanasiou, again aſter her period of maternity leave. Mr Gerald Pearson leaves from the SH&D Faculty. Year 11 and Year 13 students have been occupied with exams and we hope that the experience has given them a sense of the challenge ahead. The GCSE and A level examinaons are becoming increasingly difficult. The demands on students to learn greater quanes of informaon and to write in good English responses to much more difficult quesons means that our students will have to learn their work very thoroughly indeed. With the exams now finished the teaching staff have the task of marking and giving feedback on the work that the students have produced. Results next term! I wrote to you recently about the governors decision to apply to the Secretary of State to be a Convertor Academy. Some students have raised a few quesons and I hope that they have been able to tell you the response. As previously nofied, we will be holding a parents meeng on Thursday 16 January at 6pm in the Cambridge hall. In the first two weeks of term, when I do my start of term assemblies, I will be talking to all of the students about the proposals and ensuring that they are informed about why the governors have made this decision and what it will mean for them as students. Next term sees the opening of the new sports facility at the Cambridge campus. If you drive south along the A10 you cannot fail to see the huge amount of work that has been done. Quite rightly, the students are very excited about this new facility; it will be available for us to use in lessons and at lunchmes from late January. The new sports hall will be complete and ready for use in late February. In a me of naonal austerity with considerable pressure on the public purse, it is great for our school to benefit from such a significant investment that will offer the school and community benefits for many years to come. Term resumes on Monday 4 January for the staff with children returning on Tuesday 5 January 2016. Term dates for the spring and summer terms are included in this newsleer. We will be confirming term dates for the school year 2016-17 and therefore would be grateful if you could await publicaon before booking holidays and trips abroad. With my best wishes, Dr S M Tranter Execuve Headteacher

ADVANCE NOTICE – A DATE FOR YOUR DIARIES On Wednesday 24th February we are hosting our own HE Fair in the Cambridge school hall. We have representatives from around 25 universities attending who will be manning information stands about the courses they offer. A representative from the NAS (National Apprenticeship Service) will also be supporting us. The event will be for students in Years 11 and 12. The event will run from 1.00-4.00pm, and parents of students in Year 12 are welcome to attend along with their child. More details will follow in the New Year, but make a note of the date, as this will be very useful for students beginning to plan their post-18 options.

Celebrating Success in the MFL Faculty In September Year 7 students took part in the two-week transition project Learn my Language. They learnt about languages around the world and, more specifically, in Edmonton. Students found out that about 50 languages are spoken in their own community. They also learnt techniques on how to teach and learn languages and were able to put these into practice by teaching each other their mother tongue. Amongst the languages taught were Kurdish, Arabic, Portuguese, French, Spanish, Creole, Urdu, Bulgarian, Albanian and Somali, to name only a few. It helped smooth the transition to learning a language in a more formal manner, with students able to re-use the techniques discovered during the project. In December, students took part in a Christmas cards competition ran by Ms Bienias. We were overwhelmed with the number of participants and their creativity and it was not easy to narrow down the winners. We are pleased to announce that the winners are:

Stephanie Christou

Alex Nadim

Sh’Aniya Walker

Julianna Deryishi

Albiona Mifar

Mohammed Rahman All the MFL teachers would like to wish a ‘Joyeux Noël’ and ‘Bonne Année’ to all our students, their parents and carers.

Ms C Ramos - Head of MFL Faculty

Celebrating Success In the Transition Phase

Haroon Hussein and Julianna Deryishi both entered a Made By History competition for Black History Month. Both students wrote an excellent essay on the annual celebration of black history month and the importance of remembering those that made a change and the achievements of those that stood up, spoke out and fought for equality.

Celebrating Success in Transition Phase On Wednesday 16th December, Transition Phase held their annual ‘Yuletide Lunch’ celebration. Students brought in their ‘secret Santa’ presents in exchange for a ticket to the Yuletide lunch. The Transition Phase team; along with some of the Year 8 Buddy Mentors (our ‘Elpers’ for 2015), worked tirelessly wrapping up presents and decorating the canteen tables with crackers, snacks and glitter. Christmas music filled the air and Santa Claus managed to make his way over to Cambridge Campus to deliver the gifts! A good time was had by all and the students behaved in an exemplary manner. Well done to all students in the Transition Phase for completing their first term at Secondary school. Transition Phase Team wish you all a Merry Christmas. We thank you for your support.

Student Union Member Introduction Every year the Sixth Form team go through the timely process of finding and selecting representative members of the

school community to be nominated for the Student Union, an organization here to help students put forward ideas

and manage the event calendars for the coming year. This year we have selected seven keen and enthusiastic

students to represent the body of the Sixth Form, however the organization of the Union will be relatively different

from last year. We have carefully selected and given members specific roles within the Union based on student votes

from earlier on in the year. Each member has a different responsibility and will be able to help the whole Sixth Form in

several different ways based on their strengths and skills, the roles for each member are detailed below. We wish

them the very best of luck and huge congratulations for achieving the positions that they have been assigned to.

Lost Property

Please ask your son/daughter to check at the school office for any lost property items which have been misplaced as we have acquired many outer coats, sweat top jackets and drawstring bags with PE kits. Unfortunately it is difficult to return lost property because items have not been marked with students’ names. Please remember to clearly mark items of clothing.

Thank you for your co-operation.
