TOY DISTRIBUTION @ BEL AIRE EL
Santa came early to Bel Aire El. Every child in the school took home toys they selected thanks to the generosity of the Edge Foundation. I was grateful to be part of this event that brought smiles to all the students on this very special day. Many thanks to Ms. Prudence Hill, Principal and to the South Region Office for assisting us in coordinating this event. Thank you to Mayor Tim Meerbott from the Town of Cutler Bay for joining us and to Mercy Hernandez, President/Founder of the Edge Founda-tion and all her elves, thank you for the hard work and generosity.
I hope you had a restful and enjoyable Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday. This has been a very busy month as I have visited schools, walked parades, participated in “making smiles” and observed the goodness in peoples’ hearts. Thank you for the work you do on behalf of all the children here at Miami-Dade County Public Schools; your compassion, dedication and hard work are truly appreciated. Larry Feldman

DISTRICT 9 STUDENT LEADERSHIP ADVISORY COUNCIL (SLAC) MEETING @ BIOTECH
This month’s SLAC was hosted by BioTech at their Zoo Miami campus location where they welcomed student leaders from all the District 9 high schools with cotton candy, icee drinks and popcorn. The first item on the agenda was a presentation from Dr. Steven Whitfield, Conservation & Research Scientist at Zoo Miami. In 30 minutes, Dr. Whitfield provided us all with valuable information about conservation and the role we play in helping the environment. The students and sponsors were then shuttled to the Everglades Exhibit for a tour guided by BioTech student leaders. A huge thank you to Mr. Daniel Mateo, Principal, Ms. Barbie Garcia, Activities Director, as well as the BioTech student leaders for coordinating all the activities. Thank you also to South Region Office Superintendent Mrs. Barbara Mendizabal and her team for their continued support.

COFFEE & CONVERSATION @ BEL-AIRE EL
What a wonderful treat I received as I arrived at Bel Aire El for Coffee & Conversation. I was welcomed by the school’s Drum Line, un-der the direction of Ms. Bonnie Hinck-Baldatti. Thank you to Ms. Prudence Hill, Principal, and the faculty and staff for making us all feel at home. I truly enjoy the opportunity to converse with parents, students and staff and especially pleased to recognize students for “Doing Something Good”. Thank you to Ms. Ana Othon, South Region Director, and Ms. Sharon Carpenter, Miami-Dade Public Library, for being in attendance.
It was wonderful to bump into Jennifer Edwards, third grade teacher at Bel-Aire El. She was a first grader when I was an assistant principal at Gloria Floyd El.
