INTRODUCTION:
National Service Scheme popularly known as NSS was launched in Mahatma Gandhi
Centenary year 1969 and aimed to developing student’s personality through community
service. National Service Scheme (NSS) is a permanent youth Programme under the Ministry
of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India.
2. OBJECTIVE:
The overall objective of NSS is Personality Development through the community service.
The broad objectives of NSS are to:
• Understand the community in which they work.
• Understand themselves in relation to their community.
• Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem solving
process.
• Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility.
• Utilize their knowledge in finding practical solution to individual and community problems.
• Develop competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities.
• Gain skills in mobilizing community participation.
• Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude.
• Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters.
• Practice national integration and social harmony.
3. MOTTO:
The motto or watchword of the NSS is “Not me but you”. It underlines that the welfare of an
individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of society on the whole. This express the
essence of democratic living and upholds the need of selfless service and appreciation of the
other man’s point of view and also consideration for fellow human beings.

4. SYMBOL:
The symbol of the National Service Scheme has been based on the Giant rath wheel of the
world famous Konark Sun Temple of Orissa, India. These giant wheels of the sun temple
portray the cycles of creation, preservation and release and signify the movement in life
across time and space. The design of the symbol, a simplified form of the Sun Chariot wheel
primarily depicts movement. The wheel signifies the progressive cycle of life. It stands for
continuity as well as change and implies the continuous striving of NSS for social
transformation and enlistment.

\Sickle cell anemia
On 7th August. 2015, Workshop on “Sickle cell disease” was organized. Dr. S. L. Kate, Dr.

Swachha Bharat Abhiyan
Swachha Bharat Abhiyan was conducted on 01/10/15, 07/10/15 and 08/10/15 at Akurdi bus
stop, Nigdi Bus stop and Akurdi Railway station. Under this, cleanliness drive was conducted
by 200 students at DYPCOP, Akurdi and 70 students were involved in street play, rally and
cleanliness drive at Akurdi bus stop, Nigdi Bus stop and Akurdi Railway station

Driver’s day and road Safety awareness Program
On the eve of Awareness of Road Safety, felicitation of Bus Drivers and Street play was
organized by 50 NSS volunteers and 20 other B. Pharm students at Akurdi bus stop, Nigdi
Bus stop and Akurdi Railway station. NSS volunteers of Pad. Dr. D. Y. Patil College of
Pharmacy, Akurdi organized a felicitation program for the drivers of PMPML, on occasion of
Driver’s Day.

Hemoglobin checkup, rally on medical awareness and street play on road safety was
organized and conducted by NSS volunteers and student members on 16th Oct 2015.

Health checkup was conducted for NSS volunteers on 27th Oct 2015. All NSS
volunteers had got free checkup. Along with blood donation camp was conducted at D.Y.
Patil Polytechnic College. Blood donation camp was organized on 29th Oct 2015 in D.Y. Patil
polytechnic college. Various NSS volunteers and students along with the NSS Programme
Officer participated in this event.

NSS 7 days special camp
With the permission of NSS Dept., Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune, National
Service Scheme (NSS) unit of Pad. Dr. D. Y. Patil College of Pharmacy, Akurdi had
organized 7 days NSS Special camp at Somatane gaon, Taluka: Maval, Dist.: Pune from 24th
Dec. 2015 to 30th Dec. 2015. In this camp, various social awareness activities were performed
like Surveys (village survey, rural development survey etc.), Swachha Bharat Abhiyan, Tree
plantation (140 no’s), Water Harvesting (2 nos.), Health checkup Camp etc. Total 104 people
enrolled themselves for the health checkup camp (Hemoglobin checkup 104, diabetes
checkup 72, Blood donation 28 etc ). Addition to this, Street play and rally were organized on
Anti-tobacco, Swachha Bharat Abhiyan, Tree plantation and Road safety awareness program
etc. Various lectures were also conducted for villagers on “women empowerment” by Dr.
(Mrs.) Usha Shinde, “Geographical Survey” by Mr. Ashok Sankpal, “Animal welfare and
wellbeing” by Mr. Kishore Shirkande and Mr. Sonaji Kanse, founders of APWO, Mumbai,
on “yoga, rehabilitation and diet” by Mr. Vaibhav Vaidya, on “Pregnancy and child care” by
Dr. Smeeta Sadar. Overall event was organized by NSS program officer, Mr. D. S. Shirode.
Total 25 students (15 boys and 10 girls) were enrolled for the camp on the basis of
undertaking and NSS regular activity. In addition, teaching staff’s and peons were assigned
duties for the safety and security of the NSS volunteers. All NSS volunteers were divided into
various groups and 2-3 member from each group were nominated as group leaders for smooth
conduct of camp activity.
During this camp, various social activities were carried out in the village as per daily
schedule.

The Gram Panchayat meeting room were taken and utilized for staying of NSS
volunteers and keeping of NSS departmental materials. For girls, separate hall was taken.
During this camp, various projects were undertaken and successfully completed in the
village. These projects are as follows:
Day 1:
On first day i.e 24th December, 2015, Inauguration Ceremony was conducted. All the
students gathered there by 12 pm for the preparations. The programme started in the presence
of Honorable Sarpanch Mrs. Nalini Gaikwad, Up- Sarpanch Sachin Murhe, Ex- Sarpanch
Urmila Murhe, Gramsevak G. S. Khomne, Principal Dr. N. S. Vyawahare, NSS Officer Mr.
D. S. Shirode and other dignitaries. The inauguration was done with the hands of Sarpanch
Nalini Gaikwad and Principal Dr. N. S. Vyawahare with the lamp lightning and Saraswati
vandana. After NSS song, The felicitation of grampancyat members were done by Principal,
college members and NSS volunteers. Alumni NSS volunteer Rohit Kurhe and General
Secretary of College Ganesh Bhapkar expressed their views. Sarpanch, Up- Sarpanch and
Principal also expressed their views. Principal, Dr. N. S. Vyawahare told to mix NSS
volunteers with villagers, learnt the rural culture and adopt the self-dependent activities with
enjoyment. Mr. D. S. Shirode spoke the success of this event based on combination of
triangle NSS Guidelines (SPPU sponsored), support of Villagers and participation of NSS
volunteers. The anchoring of the event was done by Ms. Shivani Chaudhari and Mr. Akshay
Shah. After this, seven days schedule was discussed with Grampancyat members, Mr. Vishal
More informed about all areas to support proper planning of survey. Then small rally was
organised by NSS volunteers at somatane village.

Inauguration of 7 days NSS Special camp at Somatane goan
Day 2:
On 25th December, 2015, primary survey, village survey and rural development
survey were planned. The students started their day at 6 am where they did some exercises
and sung NSS songs. They had their breakfast by 7 am. They went for surveys at 7:30 am in
the areas Ganeshnagar, Gorakshnagar, Devrainagar, Vitthalwadi, Chourainagar,
Somatanephata etc. After lunch, surveys of Pawananagar and Samatanagar were conducted. It
was a successful activity where the problems of villagers were reached to Grampanchayat.
Students took survey of total 231 families which included 441 males and 379 females. Total
149 people were graduated and 97 had passed 12th. Almost every house had toilet provisions.
Leaders from NSS volunteers for this activity were Ms. Shivani Chaudhari and Mr. Saurabh
Whadgar. Total 9 groups were divided of 2-3 students in each groups. Grampanchyat
member Mr. Vishal More supported to overview village for conducting this survey.

Day 3:
On 26th December, 2015 with the help of NSS Officer Mr. D. S. Shirode, Swaccha
Bharat Abhiyan was organised. In morning 8 am, Mr. Sachin Murhe and Mr. Nitin Murhe
supplied all the requirements to conduct this campaign to the students. NSS vounteers
initiated cleanliness derive activity from Choraidevi temple. NSS volunteers continued
sweeping roads and performed skit from samtanagar to next areas of the village. They swept
the roads of Devrainagar and performed skit in residential areas. Also they had spread
awareness in the areas of Ganeshnagar, Gorakshnagar, Somatanephata, Pawananagar,
Chourainagar etc. NSS volunteers received good response and support of all the people. Thus
the activity was a success. Leaders for the campaign were NSS volunteers Salman Latif,
Aboli Jawale and Khandu Chadar. After lunch, the students had lunch and took rest for a
while. In the evening guest lecture was arranged of Dr. (Mrs.) Usha Shinde, Professor, Padm.
Dr. D. Y. Patil College of Pharmacy. She spoke on “Women Empowerment” and interacted
with women well... Guest lecture was conducted in the temple hall. Co-ordination was done
by Kamini Gangawane and Ganesh Devkar for arrangement of Guest lectures. Villagers was
happy and interacted during the lecture session with resource person. Villagers demanded this
type of more session. Then sports and cultural activities were conducted for students. NSS
program officer Mr. D. S. Shirode, Gramphancyat members Mr. Nitin Morhe were involved
for entire Swaccha bharat abhiyan activity eventhough Sarpanch, Up-Sarpanch and Ex-
Sarpanch were also joined the event meanwhile.

Day 4:
Next day i.e. On 27th December, 2015, Free Health Checkup Camp was organised
which included Diabetes checkup, Haemoglobin, Height, weight, Blood pressure check-ups
and Blood donation camp. Sarpanch, Doctors and NSS program officer inaugurated the event
in presence of villagers and NSS volunteers. Sarpanch felicitated to Doctors and NSS
program officer felicitated to Sarpanch. Doctors spoked on important of the health check
camp. Total 104 people enrolled themselves for the camp. Out of which 72 tested for diabetes
and 28 tested for blood pressure. With the help Anandrushiji Blood Bank, total 28 people
donated their blood. Sarpanch Mrs. Nalini Gaikwad, Up- Sarpanch Sachin Murhe, Mr. Nitin
Morhe, Mr. Vishal Murhe, Ex- Sarpanch Urmila Murhe etc also enrolled themselves for
checkup camp. This camp was leaded by NSS volunteer Vijay Ikale, Sapna Bhat, Asawari
Meshram, Kamini Gangawane with huge success and co-ordination. In the evening, guest

Day 5:
Tree plantation and plant distribution activity was organised on 28th December, 2015.
Up-Sarpanch, Mr. Sachin Murhe and Member, Mr. Nitin Murhe provided their great
contributions to make this event successful. Total 140 trees were planted in front of Talathi
office. All the NSS volunteers worked very hard for this activity. “One house, One tree”
distribution planning was the motto adopted for plant distribution. Total 40 plants were
distributed in the areas including Gorakshnagar, Vitthalwadi, Devrainagar, Somatanephata
etc. In the evening, Lecture was conducted on “Geographical survey” by Mr. Ashok Sankpal,
Tuljabhavani College then students discussed about geographical survey. Leaders for the
activity were Mr. Suraj Shinde, Ms. Shweta Tiwari and Mr. Khandu Chadar.

Day 6:
On 29th December, 2015, Water Harvesting activity was planned. In this activity, NSS
volunteers had built small ports in farmlands in order to collect rainwater. For one port it
required 35 sacks of mud and for other 55 sacks. After this, students performed skit/streetplay
on Rehabilitation in Tuljabhavani School. Then they had lunch in the afternoon. In the
evening they invited all the people staying nearby for guest lecture conducted in the evening.
In the presence of Mr. Ashok Sankpal, Mr. Kishore Shirkande and Mr. Sonaji Kanse,
founders of APWO delivered lecture on Animal welfare and well being. Leaders for the
activity Mr. Shankar Kore and Mr. Suraj Shinde.

Day 7:
On the last day i.e 30th December, 2015, Streeplay and rally were organised on Anti-
tabacco, Swaccha Bharat Abhiyan, Tree plantation and Road safety awareness program etc.
To spread social awareness among people. The rally was passed through various areas
including Ganeshnagar, Devrainagar, Somatanephata, Pawananagar, Samtanagar, etc.
Leaders for the activity were Ms. Komal Pardeshi and Mr. Abhay Bharambe. After the rally
was completed, students returned to camp site and started preparing for send-off ceremony.
All days activity was represented by leaders of all activity. Information of various seminars
was given by NSS volunteer Sweta Tiwari. Sarpanch, Gramsevak other members gave send
off to college, university and all participant. NSS Officer Mr. D. S. Shirode bid farewell to
everyone and thanked everyone for their valuable contributions in making 7 days NSS camp

a great success. The dinner was arranged by villagers for everyone as a token of love. After
dinner students left the village and returned to home.

Akurdi and Dehu Road. Total 52 registrations were done under this survey. A lecture was
delivered by NGO to guide students for the same.
