At last, the end of the year is finally here. We often take this time to reflect on the past year, making resolutions for the next. Before the resolutions, however, comes the tightly-packed calendar for the month of December. Trying to fit in as much quality time with our loved ones as possible can be difficult while also trying to relax. Head on over to p.74 where we recommend the top getaway spots to enjoy with your family during this holiday season.

For those of you who are already booked for all of December, you may find yourself running out of clothes to wear, not daring to wear the same outfit twice—all while trying to stay on trend this season. Worry less with SHE’s favourite outfit picks this winter on p.11 and even more on p.23. In addition to those holiday looks, flip ahead to p. 78 to achieve the looks of our past cover stars, Priyanka Chopra and Sonam Kapoor.

While this season is about spending time with our loved ones, it is also about giving back. SHE Cares is launching a special campaign called Sisters ‘Я’ Us. We are collecting donations for those around the world who are in need of food, water, clothing, shelter and education. Flip over to p.35 for more details on this campaign.

Our cover story is a work of art, thanks to well-known photographer Ram Shergill. Executive Editor, Priya Kumar, had a chance to catch up with the UK-based photographer (p.18) who has worked with the likes of Naomi Campbell, Amy Winehouse and Alexander McQueen--the list is endless. Kumar also had a chance to catch up with Neishaa Gharat, founder of emerging luxury designer label, House of Gharats, on p. 40.

We also had a chance to sit down with the stars of one of the most talked-about movies of 2014, Dr. Cabbie. Kunal Nayyar and Isabelle Kaif, sister of Katrina Kaif, talk to SHE during their movie premiere over on p.76.

Tweet us your thoughts on this issue @shecanada and you might be featured in our next issue. SHE is wishing all of our readers, a safe and happy holiday season. See you all in 2015!

Growing up, I had a vivid imagination fed by my voracious appetite for books, alongside the stories my grandmother told me during regular weekend visits. As immigrants my parents did not have much, and yet frequent library visits with my father opened me up to a world of wonder, curiosity and richness that I was allowed to fully explore. It was a magical time of self-discovery where I exercised

my imagination freely, a right I thought most children had access to.

At the time I was too young to know or understand that while I went to school during the day and spent my afternoons playing and creating magnifi-cent worlds in my mind, on the other side of the world in places like Rwanda, children were being recruited to join youth militias bent on massacring an entire ethnic group. In as little as one hundred days, 800,000 Rwandan souls lost their lives, and many of the weapon wield-ers were child soldiers. It was much later that I became privy to the information that most of the wars broadcast on the news were fought by children as young as eight years old.

It is estimated that 300,000 children, 40% of which are girls, in parts of South America, Africa, the Middle East and Asia are currently being used to further the political and violent agendas of state militaries and opposition forces. Instead of access to education, children are being equipped with cheap and easily accessible small weapons such as AK-47s, and placed on the frontlines of battle to fight wars they may not even fully understand. Whereas boy soldiers are usually delegated to battle and have some housekeeping related duties, girls are tasked with tending the army camp, face brutal rape and sexual assault regularly, and forced marriages all on top of the expectation that they too will serve in battle.

Earlier this year in March, Leila Zerrougui, the United Nations Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict launched the Children, Not Soldiers Campaign in partnership with UNICEF, hoping to drastically change the fate of children around the world. By stand-ing up against the exploitation and usage of children as soldiers, and getting offending nations on board, Zerrougui hopes to wipe the use of children in armed conflict off the face of the planet.

Child soldiers are so deeply embedded in modern warfare that it seems almost impossible to extricate them from the clutches of ruthless and cowardly adults, the very same population who should be shielding this most vulnerable population from the evils of the world. You have probably heard the proverb It takes a village to raise a child. In the same vein, it takes a small group of mor-ally corrupt adults to then use those children to further their violence soaked agendas, and transform them into deadly killing machines.

In places where poverty, political instability and corrup-tion run rampant, children are recruited to participate in hostilities, either forcibly or voluntarily. Joining the military or opposition militia for some children may be their only access to stability, as well as protection for their families, and so they willingly surrender them-

selves. In other cases, families sell their young to secure their own safety, or children are just simply snatched away. They are quickly forced to shed their innocent natures and begin spiraling downward into darkness. The re-socialization they receive at the hands of their captors-cum-commanders include the use of dangerous drug cocktails, which leave them unable to comprehend their actions, brainwashing techniques which turn them against an “other” that they are led to believe must be wiped out, and the brutal act of killing, which former child soldiers have described as difficult the first time, but easier as the bodies pile up.

The reasons child soldiers are used over adults are sim-ple. They do not require advancements in technology, and are essentially free and easily replaceable, especially in nations where fifty percent of the population is under 18. For this reason, they are used in landmine littered areas, to clear paths for adult soldiers, as well as in the first stages of battle, where they take the brunt of gunfire from the enemy. They are also used because of the disarming quality they have on an opponent. When a child is on the other end of your weapon, no matter how deadly they may be, that shock and moment of pause is enough to weaken your hold. It has sadly aided militias that use children to fight their battles.

A groundbreaking movement to end the use of children as soldiers came in 1996 with the release of Graça Ma-chel’s report to the UN Security Council, The Impact of Armed Conflict on Children. In it, Machel outlined the brutalities children face through their direct involve-ment in war, which include serious injuries, permanent disabilities, rape, sexual assault, and most common, death. After war the psychosocial impacts on former child soldiers hinder their ability to resume normal lives, and the stigma that surrounds their former occupations leave them with no communities or family to turn to. It is common for many to continue leading lives filled with violence, drugs and crime, which impede a nation’s ability to rebuild after conflict.

After the report was released, the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict was created to look at ways to help children demobilize and reintegrate back into their communities, to ultimately help them lead productive and violence free lives. NGO initiatives and UN agen-cies such as MONUSCO, and Save the Children work tirelessly around the globe to help rehabilitate former child soldiers using the UN mandated DDR program; Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration.

However, much of the criticism that NGOs and UN agencies face has to do with the existence of such initia-tives in the first place, not because of their usefulness and success in many former child soldier’s lives, but because the focus is not on preventing children from

being used as soldiers in the first place. Even though under International Law it is illegal to employ children in hostilities, and almost forty years of UN Mandates explicitly state so, thousands of children are still filling the ranks of armies. As Romeo Dallaire stated in his book, They Fight Like Soldiers, They Die Like Children, it would be better to completely halt the recruitment of child soldiers altogether, than to have to deal with trying to integrate them back into regular society.

Children, Not Soldiers hopes to do just that. All govern-ments have been tasked with eliminating the use of children as instruments of war by 2016, with complete support by the eight member states with the most grave violations. Afghanistan, Burma, Chad, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Yemen have committed to eradicating the use of child soldiers within their borders, and are closely monitoring military forces to ensure their ranks remain child-free. Also crucial to the initiative’s success is the prevention of the procurement of small weapons, which greatly help reduce the risk of children being used as soldiers. Just as groundbreaking as Machel’s report to the Security Council in 1996, Children, Not Soldiers finally and permanently answers the call to end the recruitment of children into armies, to ensure they remain in schools where the only tools being brandished are pencils, books, and their imaginations.

They pair have become major players on London’s fashion landscape. “Peter Pilotto’s vision of womenswear embraces both new and classic perspectives on elegance. Otherworldly prints combine with soft, sculptural shapes to form the handwriting of the design duo, something which evolves and is explored each season as opposed to being reactionary,” sums up the British Fashion Council. They have self-described their designs as “a craft elevated beyond print” and “thought-through print placements”.

For SS15 their cyber florals join a constellation of swirling geometry as coils and fans of guipure lace meet technical macramé and custom dandelion jacquards with sparkling tinsel. Silk leaves and windowpane checks are applied to iridescent organza,

There is something truly visually disrupting about Peter Pilotto designs. The first time I recall seeing

one of their unmistakable patterns was on the cover of ELLE UK back in 2012; Gwen Stefani graced the

cover, defying age—what else is new?—in a blue and black two-piece frock. It was unforgettable. So much so, I had to find out more about this about this newly emerged designer. To my surprise, the designer was not one person, but rather a duo. Peter Pilotto and Christopher de Vos met while studying at Antwerp’s

esteemed Royal Academy of Fine Arts. They graduated in 2000.

while grits of naive florals blossom on black denim. The spectral palette pulses energetically throughout. This season’s silhouettes welcome Spring ranging from a trim bodice to ultra slim trousers to planed shifts. Handkerchief hems add a splash of imagination (if needed) to A-line skirts, while featherweight knits, classically draped offer a touch of asymmetry. Bright embroideries, interlocking chain motifs and cascades of sequins vibrate throughout the collection.

It’s no wonder fast fashion has adopted the audacious digital print. Speaking of fast fashion, Peter Pilotto’s Target capsule collection had a very successful run earlier in 2014 proving the fashion label’s universal appeal. It continues to be the London-based fashion house to watch.

British-born and bred, Ram Shergill entered fashion photography with the guidance of famed Milner Philip Treacy, the late Isabella Blow and Alexander McQueen. They recognized his talent, brought him to the attention of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Tatler, ID, Pop, Dazed & Confused and W magazine. He shot Amy Winehouse before she became a household name; in fact, she insisted on calling him Raj. She claimed he looked like a Raj.

He has since shot Dame Judi Dench, Eddie Redmayne and Diane Kruger. Perhaps his best known work is a beautifully shot coffee table book for designers Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla. I had the opportunity to leaf through the giant tome at Paris Fashion Week last year; it was a welcome surprise to see such cutting-edge photography come out of India.

A solo exhibition featuring his curated work over the past few years would only seem appropriate at this point. Aptly titled Kaleidoscope, the British Asian fashion photographer brings together a melange of styles and subjects. He will be touring India through the end of 2014 to mid-2015 with the Vacheron Constantin-sponsored exhibit. I recently caught-up with Shergill in London to chat about his career thus far and what led to Kaleidoscope.

What sparked your debut in the British fashion industry? How was famed Milner Phillip Treacy involved?

I had a project whilst at university based on hats, make-up and jewellery. I contacted Philip and asked if I could borrow his hats; he said that I could come to London and take the hats into the street one by one and shoot them. After the shoot I saw an eccentric woman in the studio, [Isabella Blow]. “My dear boy, are you from India?” she asked. She

was dressed in a hat which was in the shape of a Hoover pipe and had red lipstick smothered around her face. She was also wearing a lovely pair of gold Manolo Blahniks and an oriental dressing gown. She looked like something out of a Hollywood film. Simply stunning. She then said that a lot of her family are from Sri Lanka. She took a liking to me and introduced me to the likes of Alexander McQueen and some of the most iconic people in the industry.

Tell me about the evolution of your career as a photographer. Did you begin locally in London or during a sojourn to Mumbai?

I am a British-born Indian and grew up in the UK. I studied photography at University and discovered my passion started from an early age, looking at old movies and travelling around the globe with my parents.

Where do you find inspiration when putting a storyboard together for a shoot whether creative or commercial?

The mood board comes from my head and inspirations come from the world around me, artists, musicians and people I meet. I also love to go to art galleries and sit and stare at paintings.

Are you able to share an anecdote with a huge name you’ve photographed in the past?

I had lots of fun with will.i.am and had Cheryl Cole. So many fun stories about that shoot. Also working with Amy Winehouse and Naomi Campbell was great fun. On a shoot with Naomi to lighten the mood I taught her how to Bollywood dance! She was a natural at it and everybody

It’s not often one comes across a celebrated South Asian photographer—especially outside of the subcontinent. Since arriving in London a little over a year ago, I’ve had no shortage of fashion photography and Indian art exhibits to attend. But it was not until a colleague drew my attention to Ram Shergill that I realized the two did not necessarily have to be mutually exclusive. The exhibit: Kaleidoscope. The photographer: Ram Shergill.

had fun watching us imitate screwing light bulbs into the ceiling.

Tell me a bit about Drama Magazine, your own publication. What sets it apart from other photography and culture glossies?Drama is like an iconic coffee table book but it’s a magazine. We delve into the artist’s character and do various photo shoots which are like mini performances. Drama is super successful and is selling out all over the world.

How did Kaleidoscope come about? Tell me a bit about your relationship with Vacheron Constantin. I remember as a child looking through a kaleidoscope and loved the colours and itinerant patterns. This made me make images in my head of people and fantasies. I believe that life is like a kaleidoscope of colours and with every move we make it’s a different colour, hue and pattern of emotion, desire and love. I have always loved Vacheron Constantin timepieces so felt honoured to be asked by them.

What upcoming projects do you have in North America, Europe or the Middle East if any?

I will be doing various shoots in North America especially in the national parks. I love the nature as a backdrop. Europe I also have many locations and clients who want me to shoot with them so I’m super exited. I would love to come to the Middle East and explore. I have only been there once and I do believe it has a lot to offer in heritage and wonderful light and locations. I really want to go to Petra in Jordan and look forward to see a wealth of exotic locations.

The city’s fashion elite and most stylish took to David Pecaut Square, giving many designers a run for their mon-ey. As the pavement trans-formed into a runway and the fashion unicorns came out to play, SHE Canada got in on the action! How would you describe House of Gharats to someone unfamiliar with Indian indigenous textiles?

House of Gharats apparel and accessory designs tell a story of interweaving of cultures, social changes and the juxtaposition between tradition and modernity. We create a bridge between art, textile crafts and fashion. The brand is driven by the values of art and craft, rather than fashion, and as a result, our designs are not about trends, but are timeless pieces that can be passed down through the generations.

Textiles are the bedrock of fashion and that’s where our fashion story begins. The textiles of the Indian subcontinent have captivated and adorned the world for more than 2000 years. No other region has been home to a greater variety of fiber, fabric and patterning technique. Indian craftspeople created magnificent woven embroidered and resist patterned textiles for centuries.

House of Gharats is passionate about sourcing the most beautiful hand printed and woven Indian textiles, supporting age-old textile arts and crafts. Its aim is to give the aesthete an opportunity to understand the depth of Indian arts and textile crafts, while creating product that is wearable.

1. the faculty of making fortunate discoveries by accident

Back in March 2013 SHE ran a feature about the Sabyasachi Suite in the Taj Hotel’s 51 Buckingham Gate property. Over a year later the hotel’s publicity department caught wind of the article and invited me to see the suite in person. What happened next could not be described as anything short of serendipitous. Neishaa Gharat, founder of House of Gharats, was also attending an event at the Taj that same day. After being introduced by the hotel’s venerable publicity team, we found a synergy unlike any other. Gharat founded her eponymous label with the aim of both reviving indigenous craftsmanship and offering clients timeless investment pieces that can be worn for generations. Standing for many of the same values and principles as SHE—including offering aid and support to those less fortunate—introducing Gharat’s work to our readers could not be more appropriate.

The collection of jackets brings together Indian printed cottons, silk brocades and Savile Row tailoring. The textiles are made using traditional Indian methods of printing and weaving. For example our collection includes Kalamkari cotton, which is the earliest technique of block printing, using vegetable dyes and a combination of hand-printing and painting. It is a complex and intricate process, which may take up to several months,

and the blocks are made by specialist artisans. The Dhaboo print is a resist printing process using wooden hand-blocks and natural dyes with vegetable pastes. The speciality of the print is its unevenness, giving it a sublime and natural look.

The collection of silk scarves works as a platform to showcase the work of South Asian indigenous artists, photographers and young British and Indian design students. For one part of our silk scarf collection we collaborated with Bhaskar Chitrakar. He is one of a handful of surviving Kalighat painters, with an aim to revive the traditional form of painting, which originated in the 19th century and is distinct for the use of striking colour palettes and depicting everyday subjects. He modernizes this form of painting through his brushstrokes and often surprising take on the traditional tales and motifs. These motifs, like the horse and the cat, are then combined with modern colours and patters, like the polka dot.

What is your background in design? Did you study it?

I studied visual arts, and co-founded and pioneered the concept of the design and communications studio in Mumbai in the mid-nineties. I learned to be an entrepreneur on the job, and we grew from a team of three to 50, which was a size unheard of in that decade and worked with global and national brands. Being an entrepreneur is not a 9-to-5 job; it’s about 20 hour days and facing the impossible, day after day. This teaches one the importance of loving what you do and persistent hard work.

Recently I humbly received the Indian Global Excellence award for my design and humanitarian work. From early on I was involved in our family’s charity Project Crayons, which through its grassroots projects work directly with underprivileged women and children in Mumbai, by providing basic shelter, health and education. House of Gharats has social good and inclusive growth at the centre of its brand ethics. We have embarked upon the Support HER campaign, which aims to not only support through basic needs, but also provide skills training to women and young girls around India. What techniques do you use in your pieces?

House of Gharats is very much a part of the slow fashion movement. We recognize the importance of sustainable and ethical fashion, sourcing our materials directly from authentic sources and artisans who make them, thus supporting the traditional forms of arts and crafts. In a world where fashion is becoming faster every day and trends can come and go within weeks, we recognize the importance of limited edition, timeless fashion.

We work with a range of disciplines from indigenous artists who combine both traditional and modern media, to traditional chitrakars (painters) practicing

Pattachitra, the ancient Indian form of painting on cloth using mythical motifs, to photographers who capture amazing street life and budding artists from art schools.

How did your tie up with Taj Hotels & Resorts come about?

We found perfect synergy with Taj Khazana as our design ethos strongly corresponds with theirs. Their philosophy resonates with our aim to support traditional arts and crafts of India and make them available globally. Tell me about your latest campaign. What’s the inspiration behind bringing ballerinas and your pieces together?

Our designs are about real people. It’s about authenticity, identity and self-expression. I see fashion as human. The ballerina campaign is about their strengths, their weaknesses, no absolutes but sums and totals. The grace, the form, the passion, the pain, the love.

My inspiration was the film Black Swan and a series of articles, which portrayed ballerinas from the human perspective. I see seamless parallels between the ballerina and textiles I work with—the tough process of making a dancer’s body like textiles in order to achieve the beauty from inside out. What connects these two is the labour that comes out of love, and I can very much relate to that. Where can Canadians get their hands on House of Gharats?

Currently we are represented in Taj Khazana at St James’ Court, a Taj Hotel in London. The hotel is a quiet masterpiece discreetly tucked away between Buckingham Palace and Westminster Cathedral.

In addition, our online store is due to launch in January. Those who are interested in the brand will be able to register on our website to keep up to date with our new collections and bespoke work.

48 SHE CANADA

What was it that pushed you to establish your own yoga practice?

Several events convinced me to dedicate my life to yoga. My approach and love for teaching derives from my experience as a woman. Yoga helped me resolve grief from depression inspiring me to help others. I discovered a practice that left me feeling grounded, confident and better able to deal with stressors. For me, the greatest gift you can give someone is to show them how to love themselves. That’s what happened with me, Yoga allowed me to love myself fully and I knew I had to share this with the world! I believe that we all can create truly fulfilling and successful lives, it begins when we stop making life choices from a place of fear and learn to live in a world of love. Each student lies with a vast wellspring of love and potential and it’s my job as a teacher to draw that out in everyone. We all have a unique purpose here in this world, something that is worth tuning into and paying attention to. Through my personal journey yoga has proven to be an amazing tool with my physical and mental health and with my own practice Bliss Yoga With Annu, I hope to provide value to others around me with the same tools and knowledge to have a fulfilling and joyful life.

What is it about yoga that draws you toward it? Your favorite part of yoga?

The first time I practiced yoga there was something about it that highly attracted me towards coming back and back again for more. Questions like “Why in the world” and “So what” would race through my mind, yet I was deeply impressed. I wanted to know how twisting and bending your body could have anything to do with life, meaning, happiness and truth. And like many things in life, we can never know in advance the full impact something is going to have on us but I knew that it was the one hour that I could just detach myself from the world and focus on bringing

out the best version of myself to the forefront. As I kept practicing yoga and meditation regularly, this subtle sense of feeling so good mentally and physically becomes so pervasive, so much a part of you that it carries over into the whole of your life. And in doing so, it helps clarify your deepest longings and motivations, which then restores hope and purpose into life. My favorite part, and the beauty of yoga is that is can be practiced pretty much anywhere.

What are some wise words that you choose to live by?

“We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts, we make the world”. Gautama Buddha. My philosophy in life has always been that a negative mind will never give you a positive life, and it is true.

When teaching your students yoga, what is the most important thing you hope they learn?

When teaching my students, I hope they learn that yoga is aimed at the monumental, life-changing discovery of who and what you truly are. This is how yoga works, how it makes you feel good, experience the truth, your truth that you discover. My message to my students is simple; I encourage getting out of your comfort zone. It is easy to focus purely on what comes easy to us and what we are good at. Things are difficult for a reason and we hold tension in the parts of the body we don’t usually focus on because we shy away from pain. Know what pain is, acknowledge it is here and needs to be here; it is how we move forward. The resistance you feel in important. Let this go when you step on your mat and focus on your least favorite poses they are the keys to the evolution of your soul.

A Chat With

Miss India Canada

A 23-year-old yoga instructor and aspiring child and youth worker competed against 15 other South Asian women from across Canada at the International Plaza Hotel. Just as well, she was crowned Miss India Canada and SHE had a chance to catch up with the newly crowned entrepreneur.

SHE CANADA 49

Since you’ve been crowned Miss India-Canada, what is a typical day like for you?

Since I have been crowned Miss India-Canada a typical morning for me always begins with an energetic yoga practice to leave me feeling awake and happy for the rest of the day. I balance my week by going to school fulltime at Ryerson University where I am taking Child and Youth Care. Also teaching yoga at several studious throughout the week in the evenings. On my downtime I am always staying creative, trying to think of new ideas and ventures to dive in on such as blogging or new yoga videos. And for fun I love to be outdoors, meditate and spend time with my family. There is always something new and exciting each and everyday for me, it is a crazy journey.

What do you hope to achieve as Miss India-Canada?

As Miss India Canada I hope to make a positive difference in peoples lives. By connecting with people within my community and being a role model, my goal as a yoga educator is to improve the physical, emotional and social development of those around me. My passion lies in helping others and providing opportunities for them. So I hope with this exciting year that I get to connect with as many people as I can. I am in the process of creating my own YouTube channel where people all over the world now can have access and learn first hand the great benefits of yoga through me.

The door really was perfectly round, and it indeed was painted green with a shiny brass knob right in the middle. The splash of yellow paint against the green grass and the crooked old oak tree that perched above made it easy to spot Bilbo Baggin’s house from the distance. I hastened my steps up the stone pathway that snaked uphill through the perfectly manicured gardens, eager to have a closer look. No time to stop and smell the flowers.

Giddy and eager like a little schoolgirl, I was nearly running through “Hobbiton”, the site of the movie set where the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies were filmed. A few final steps brought me right to Bilbo’s doorstep.

I stood behind the petite wooden fence taking in the details. Everything about this little hobbit hole was made to be real – a real, hinged door that was propped ajar, real stone steps leading down to the fence, and a real garden filled with flowers and lush, green grass.

It was just as Tolkien described it and exactly how it looked on film.

Located in the teensy locality of Matamata, just a couple hours drive outside Auckland, Hobbiton is definitely the number one spot to visit in New Zealand for Lord of the Rings fans. The tour of the site begins as you walk down a gravel path, entering Hobbiton using the same route that Gandalf takes as he arrives at the Shire in the beginning of the first Lord of the Rings film. From there, it takes about an hour as you wind your way through Hobbiton visiting each hobbit hole and hearing stories about the cast and the crew of the films along the way. The experience makes you feel as you’ve stepped right inside the movie.

Of course The Lord of the Rings experience begins before you even enter Hobbiton. An hour earlier, I had

found myself driving through the regional roads of Matamata surrounded by a scenery of rolling hills, hundreds of sheep and what was likely the greenest grass I have ever seen in my life. It looked just like the Shire.

WELLINGTONContinuing my hobbit adventure through New Zealand, I made my way to Wellington, lovingly referred to as “Wellywood” by the locals because of its booming film industry. New Zealand’s capital is a pretty waterfront city packed full of great museums, a beautiful botanical garden, and a fantastic food scene that will satisfy even the most proud foodie.

I made sure to make plenty of time for good food like steak frites at Floriditas on Cuba Street and a scrumptious brunch at Thunderbird café, but I was here primarily on a hobbit-related mission.

I rang up Flat Earth New Zealand Experiences to book myself on their luxury Lord of the Rings tour. A day later I was cruising down the highway, on my way to take in the sights and locations of the Lord of the Rings in and around Wellington.

We swapped the urban landscape of downtown Wellington for the wooded beauty of the city’s regional parks.

Packed into the day were visits to Rivendell where Frodo recovered from his knife attack, the Anduin River through which the Fellowship rode their boats on their way to Amon Hen, the Gardens of Isengard where Gandalf went to visit Saruman, Mount Victoria and the Buckland Forest where the hobbits hid from the Nazgul and the quarry that was used for the filming of Helms Deep in Rohan and Minas Tirith in Gondor. At every site, our tour guide entertained us with stories from the set of the films helping us bring alive our favourite scenes right in front of our eyes.

Visiting the hobbits in

New ZealandBy Zebunnisa Mirza

In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare,

sandy hole with noth-ing in it to sit down on or to eat: it

was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.

It had a perfectly round door like a porthole, painted green, with a

shiny yellow brass knob in the exact middle.

QUEENSTOWNThe sun shone bright turning Lake Wakatipu into a giant sparkling sheet of sequined teal blue satin. In the distance, the snow-capped peaks of the Remarkables decorated the edge of the magnificent vista that my tour guide referred to as the million dollar view. It was a fitting name.

The Glenorchy area just outside of Queenstown was our destination on the luxury 4WD tour by Nomad Safaris. The area was home to several shoot locations from the Lord of the Ring and The Hobbit films including Isengard, Ithilien and Lothlorien, and the Remarkables mountain range that followed us everywhere we went were painted into the background of several scenes in both trilogies.

It was hard to stay focused on conversation while exploring such a pretty landscape. We stopped to dip our toes into Lake Wakatipu. The red hues from the rocks at the bottom of the lake turned the shallow edges of the water into a lovely rosé colour. We passed through some sheep farms where baby lambs frolicked among vividly green grass. Tea was served on the grey-pebbled banks of the shallow but brilliantly blue-hued Shotover river which shimmered in the sunlight.

As I sipped my tea surrounded by what was likely Mother Nature’s finest piece of work, I reflected on my journey through New Zealand. Although it was my love for the Lord of the Rings that brought me to this country, it was the landscape and its people that had become the most memorable part of my visit. Ten days was not enough time to spend in a country I had fallen in love with. I knew I had to come back to sip tea right there next to a sparkling river, flanked by a snow-capped mountain range on a tiny island nation in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. I had to come back to New Zealand.

With almost a decade of experience in magic and entertain-ment, you must have been enamoured with magic at quite a young age. Can you describe your first encounter with illusion and how it managed to grab a hold of you?

I started magic when I was 11 years old, and it was David Blaine on TV. I was obsessed; I would watch things like that over and over until I was able to do them myself. I was a very quiet kid, so I learnt how to talk to people through mag-ic, so it meant more to me than just doing tricks. That’s why it stuck with me and as the years kept going, I got better at it and I realized I was pretty good. Then I started getting paid to do it, then it got bigger and bigger and here I am.

You have given yourself the tagline ‘mind, magic, music’, how did you decide to combine the three and how do you do it?

So for me I wanted to do something completely new to magic and that’s what David Blaine was to magic. He took the concept of doing magic and took it to the street and it became street magic. So I figured that if I wanted to be as revolutionary as David Blaine I would have to do something different. So music, especially with my brother (Lomaticc), being heavily into music, I naturally started to use that in my routine so I started coming up with routines that are music and magic related and that’s why it’s mind, magic, music.

When it comes to magic, who are you inspired by? If you

could pick anyone in the entire entertainment business to collaborate with, who would it be and why?

Well my brother for sure. Just art in general inspires me.There are people like Pharell and Kanye West. I have a lot of hip-hop influences so I guess that’s where the music comes from. Those are the people that I want to collaborate with. If it was art based, I would love to work with David Blaine or this new magician Dynamo from England. But the one’s that continually do new stuff, I would love to work with those guys for sure.

What would you say you’re most proud of accomplishing in your career so far?

So it’s on a consistent basis, the most amazing thing I would have to say is the news (CP24), that probably did the most for me. People still recognize me from that, which is really weird for me.

You’re a great example of someone who has turned your passion into your own business, what challenges come with that?

Thank you. Self motivation is the challenge that comes with that because no one’s going to tell you to do it, it’s up to you what happens. So that’s the basis of everything, if you can’t motivate yourself to do it, then you are not go-ing to succeed very much, because if you need someone

and that someone isn’t always there, you’re not really doing it yourself. For me, what I do especially with these kinds of events that I throw, I create pressure. It’s very stressful but I’ll come up with an idea, a concept for the show, I’ll plan it and I’ll tell everybody to come. I’ll sell tickets and everything and then I’ll start working on it. So that way I have a show date, I have no choice but to perform that day. I’ve told everyone to come out and then I just have to meet my own demand that I create. So that’s nerve wracking because I’m always nervous in case I don’t have enough time to practise. It’s a bad way to do it to be honest, but it’s great because it always executes. It’s always about getting it done, whether it’s amazing quality or not, it’s just about making sure you meet demands and get-ting it done in time. I create pressure for myself. That’s what the biggest challenge is, motivating me.

For any budding magicians out there, what piece of advice do you have for them?

Make sure that whatever you learn, whether it’s from a book or from a movie or from yourself, make sure that it’s something that is unique to you. Otherwise, you’re just going to be the next guy who did it. Just make sure there’s your own spin on it, or your own way of doing it. That’s very important, otherwise this art is going to die.

Can you describe the most rewarding aspect of performing before audiences?

When I come up with tricks and I make them up, a lot of them will work in theory. I’m nervous about those ones that I’ve never done before and [are] just in theory. When I come up with something that no one has done before and it works, that’s the most rewarding thing. With performances for big clients such as CP24, Hudson’s Bay, Four Weddings Canada, Sick Kids and many more, where do you hope to see yourself headed in the future?

My current boyfriend and I have been dating for almost 3 months and while he has met some of my family members on a couple of occasions, I still haven’t met anyone from his family. Our relationship is amazing and things have been going really well so I just don’t understand why he hasn’t invited me to meet any of his family members. I’m starting to worry, how should I bring this up?

HE: If you say everything in your relationship is going good I wouldn’t be too concerned. I definitely would let him bring it up in his own way. A lot of guys are a little more secretive with this kind of thing so I wouldn’t take it as a sign that he’s not in to you. Your relationship is still new so he is most likely enjoying just being with you right now.

SHE: If he’s always been honest with you then I don’t think it’s a sign he doesn’t want you to meet them, but I would definitely bring it up to him. He may just need a gentle nudge. Let him know that family is really important to you and that you would really love to meet his. Try not to be pushy about it, but if he seems really resistant there may be some cause of alarm. Then I would just be upfront and ask him if there’s any particular reason he doesn’t feel ready for this yet.

I’m a 26-year-old living with two other roommates who are my good friends. We have been friends for years, but I’m an obsessive neat freak and my other roommates are quite the opposite. It’s gotten to the point where I feel like I’m the only one who ever cleans and I’m so sick of it. Our lease will be over soon and I’ve been considering moving out and getting my own place for a while anyways. I’ve found the perfect apartment, but I don’t know how to tell my roommates. How should I bring it up without offending them and potentially hurting our friendships?

HE: Just be honest and tell them you don’t feel like constantly cleaning anymore and you want to get your own place anyways. If you have been good friends for years I don’t think they’ll be upset, but tell them sooner than later so they can find a place too.

SHE: Tell your friends you’re ready for a new phase in your life and you are getting your own place, but I wouldn’t mention anything about being unclean. It’s better to leave on a good note and it isn’t like you’re being dishonest. Your friends may be sad at first, but if you’ve known each other long then I think they’ll be happy for you. If your lease is ending soon you only have to put up with it for a little longer.

Today we are launching a campaign called “HeForShe.”

I am reaching out to you because I need your help. We want to end gender inequality—and to do that we need everyone to be involved. This is the first campaign of its kind at the UN: we want to try and galvanize as many men and boys as possible to be advocates for gender equality. And we don’t just want to talk about it, but make sure it is tangible.

I was appointed six months ago and the more I have spoken about feminism the more I have realized that fighting for women’s rights has too often become synonymous with man-hating. If there is one thing I know for certain, it is that this has to stop. For the record, feminism by definition is: “The belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. It is the theory of the political, economic and social equality of the sexes.”

I started questioning gender-based assumptions when at eight I was confused at being called “bossy,” because I wanted to direct the plays we would put on for our parents—but the boys were not. When at 14 I started being sexualized by certain elements of the press. When at 15 my girlfriends started dropping out of their sports teams because they didn’t want to appear “muscly.” When at 18 my male friends were unable to express their feelings. I decided I was a feminist and this seemed uncomplicated to me. But my recent research has shown me that feminism has become an unpopular word.

Apparently I am among the ranks of women whose expressions are seen as too strong, too aggressive, isolating, anti-men and, unattractive. Why is the word such an uncomfortable one? I am from Britain and think it is right that as a woman I am paid the same as my male counterparts. I think it is right that I should be able to make decisions about my own body. I think it is right that women be involved on my behalf in the policies and decision-making of my country. I think it is right that socially I am afforded the same respect as men. But sadly I can say that there is no one country in the world where all women can expect to receive these rights. No country in the world can yet say they have achieved gender equality. These rights I consider to be human rights but I am one of the lucky ones.

My life is a sheer privilege because my parents didn’t love me less because I was born a daughter. My school did not limit me because I was a girl. My mentors didn’t assume I would go less far because I might give birth to a child one day. These influencers were the gender equality ambassadors that made who I am today. They may not know it, but they are the inadvertent feminists who are. And we need more of those. And if you still hate the word—it is not the word that is important but the idea and the ambition behind it. Because not all women have been afforded the same rights that I have. In fact, statistically, very few have been.

On September 20th, the United Nations went quiet in awe, as Goodwill Ambassador Emma Watson delivered her speech on gender equality for the “HeforShe” Campaign. HeforShe strives to allow women and men to view feminism in a new light, bringing truth back to its meaning. For a long time we have shied away from the word feminist, as an “us versus them” mentality has become our first association. It is time to change that, to not only empower women, but allow men to grow up outside of gender stereotypes. As Ms. Watson so powerfully stated, “If not me, then who? If not now, then when?” At SHE we believe the time for all of us is now, only together we can make equality possible.

SHE CANADA 67

In 1997, Hilary Clinton made a famous speech in Beijing about women’s rights. Sadly many of the things she wanted to change are still a reality today. But what stood out for me the most was that only 30 per cent of her audience were male. How can we affect change in the world when only half of it is invited or feel welcome to participate in the conversation? Men—I would like to take this opportunity to extend your formal invitation. Gender equality is your issue too. Because to date, I’ve seen my father’s role as a parent being valued less by society despite my needing his presence as a child as much as my mother’s. I’ve seen young men suffering from mental illness unable to ask for help for fear it would make them look less “macho”—in fact in the UK suicide is the biggest killer of men between 20-49; eclipsing road accidents, cancer and coronary heart disease. I’ve seen men made fragile and insecure by a distorted sense of what constitutes male success. Men don’t have the benefits of equality either.

We don’t often talk about men being imprisoned by gender stereotypes, but I can see that they are and that when they are free, things will change for women as a natural consequence. If men don’t have to be aggressive in order to be accepted women won’t feel compelled to be submissive. If men don’t have to control, women won’t have to be controlled. Both men and women should feel free to be sensitive. Both men and women should feel free to be strong… It is time that we all perceive gender on a spectrum not as two opposing sets of ideals. If we stop defining each other by what we are not and start defining ourselves by what we are—we can all be freer and this is what HeForShe is about. It’s about freedom. I want men to take up this mantle. So their daughters, sisters and mothers can be free from prejudice, but also so that their sons have permission to be vulnerable and human too—reclaim

those parts of themselves they’ve abandoned and in doing so be a more true and complete version of themselves.

You might be thinking who is this Harry Potter girl? And what is she doing up on stage at the UN. It’s a good question and trust me I have been asking myself the same thing. I don’t know if I am qualified to be here. All I know is that I care about this problem. And I want to make it better. And having seen what I’ve seen—and given the chance—I feel it is my duty to say something. English statesman Edmund Burke said: “All that is needed for the forces of evil to triumph is for enough good men and women to do nothing.” In my nervousness for this speech and in my moments of doubt I’ve told myself firmly—if not me, who? If not now, when? If you have similar doubts when opportunities are presented to you I hope those words might be helpful.

Because the reality is that if we do nothing it will take 75 years, or for me to be nearly a hundred, before women can expect to be paid the same as men for the same work. 15.5 million girls will be married in the next 16 years as children. And at current rates it won’t be until 2086 before all rural African girls will be able to receive a secondary education. If you believe in equality, you might be one of those inadvertent feminists I spoke of earlier. And for this I applaud you. We are struggling for a uniting word but the good news is we have a uniting movement. It is called HeForShe. I am inviting you to step forward, to be seen to speak up, to be the he for she. And to ask yourself if not me, who? If not now, when?

Thank you.

ThE pOlITICS Of

CORRUpTION IN INdIa

Politics and corruption in India have always gone hand-in-hand. As a nation with 600 million living in poverty and a population comprised of 65% under the age of 35, most without a professional skill-set, every cent is needed to improve the livelihood of Indian citizens. It has been said that over 50% of taxpayer revenue intended for the welfare of the nation ends up in the pockets of politicians, influential businessmen and private corporations. As a nation boasting many of the world’s richest billionaires, Priya Kumar discusses how India has ended up in this predicament.

Jayaram Jayalalitha, the chief minister of

the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu, was found guilty of corruption back in September of this year. She had accumulated wealth of over $10m that was discovered missing through governmental audits. Known as Amma (mother) by her follow-ers and political supporters, the chief minister has been under investigation for the past 18 years. It was back in 1996 when Sumbramanian Swamy of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)—the current party in office that won a landslide victory earlier this year—filed a complaint. Jayalalitha was unable to account for how she acquired Rs660m (over $11million) on a token salary of

1Rs (2 cents) a month from 1991 to 1996. When arrested, her assets included 10,500 saris, 91 watches, 750 pairs of shoes, 880kg of silver, 28kg of gold, real estate and companies, as reported by the Financial Times. Most notably, she hosted an excessively opulent wedding for her adopted son back in 1995. Thousands of guests congregated for the nuptials with full city blocks closed off in Chennai. In an even more bizarre twist, the giant wedding tents were adorned by giant portraits of Jayalalithaa. It was a lifestyle to which the movie star-turned-politician had become accustomed. She entered politics in the early 1980s after appearing in over 150 Tamil-language films. She was serving her third term as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu where she had been in office since the mid-‘90s. Part of her platform when running for re-election included promising voters household appliances like blenders, goats and gifts of gold necklaces for their support. After her sentence was read there were reports out of India of her cult-like followers dying of distress and committing suicide over her imprisonment. The 66-year-old’s sentence includes prison time and a hefty fine of one billion rupees ($16 million) but she is out on bail until December 2014, when she must present all financial docu-ments to India’s high courts about her earnings.

political Ethics and Agendas

Corruption and India are hardly mutually exclusive. The Corruption Perception Index of Transparency International ranks India 94 out of 176 countries for corruption tying with Benin, Colombia and Senegal. In fact, India is one of the only nations that do not require politicians to offer full disclosure of their funds to the public. Up to 90% of political parties’ finances are untraceable. Economist and author Nani Palkiwala stated in his book We, the People, “Truly, we Indians are a ‘low arousal’ people. We endure injustice and unfair-ness with feudalistic servility and fatalistic resigna-tion. The poor of India endure inhuman conditions which would have led to a bloody revolution in any other country.” India’s extreme poverty rate presently sits at 37%. Should a nation so staggeringly poor boast a space program and then proceed to receive aid from nations like Canada, the US and UK? Instead of photographing the landscape of Mars, perhaps the Indian government ought to create sanitation infrastructure for its citizens, the majority of whom do not have access to a toilet. Sure, Science/Tech-nology and Sanitation are two entirely different budgets, but when governmental spending is this skewed away from the welfare of its own citizens it should be considered a major red flag that corrup-tion is taking place.

Black Money in India

In an article put out by Harvard Uni-versity’s Institute of Politics, former Time magazine editor Anita Pratap was quoted about how Indians turn black money, white: “Indians can deposit funds in Mauritius bank accounts tax free, allowing politicians to ‘round trip’ their money—it comes back into India as white money through fake projects or to fund their election campaigns.” The small island renowned the world over for its pristine beaches has become India’s biggest financier. Strides have been made to rem-edy this issue, but when new tax codes intended to shut this legal loophole down was pushed back to this year, the end of money laundering via Mauritius has been called into question.

Cutting politics (Thus Corruption) Out of the Equation

K.J. Alphons, now a current MP with the BJP, started a private literacy initia-tive in Kerala. The program did not rely on governmental funding and instead drew in 14,000 volunteers to teach the general public to read. The program was

corruption-free and a resounding suc-cess. It made the city of Kottayam India’s first to boast a 100% literacy rate. He ap-plied the same methodology to vaccinate children across the city resulting in a health index on par with the United States. Other private and governmen-tal initiatives that have eliminated cor-ruption have also proven to be largely successful. From policing to food distribution, these case studies have shown that state government initiatives can take place while simultaneously fighting corruption. Political revolutionaries like Alphons have shown that leading with honesty is vital in the fight against corruption. The BJP has integrated this anti-cor-ruption sentiment into their platform, rewarding politicians who serve as bribery whistleblowers. After 18 years of being tried unsuccessfully, Jayalalitha has finally been brought to justice less than five months after the change in government. Perhaps the BJP is making good of their promises by standing with the citizens of India as opposed to stealing from them.

The economic situation in the Palestinian West Bank is becoming desperate. Due to the political situation in the region, economic activities are at an all-time low and unemployment is on the rise. Even people who are employed suffer as their employers, notably the Palestinian National Authority, are unable to pay their salaries. It is estimated that presently 65 percent of the population in the West Bank lives in poverty. This means hidden starvation, especially for families who already were poor before the current economic recession and do not have reserves to fall back on. Families headed by a woman and without a male breadwinner, the sick and the elderly are hit hardest. Most Palestinian families are large. In some regions, the average family comprises no less than nine members, most of them children of school age, who all rely on a sole breadwinner.

Humanitarian Relief Society (HRS), a Palestinian humanitarian organization active in the West Bank, especially in Arroub refugee camp, therefore proposes to distribute a 20-kg sack of rice to 350 extremely poor families. Rice is the main staple of the Palestinian diet and is eaten for lunch and frequently dinner. Most families cannot afford to purchase a sack of rice and resort to buying small quantities on a daily basis. Little money remains to purchase other ingredients of a nutritious meal, for example vegetables, cooking oil and meat. Eating only or mainly carbohydrates leads to malnutrition in the long run,

especially among children, who need all kinds of nutrients to grow and develop healthily. A family who has a sack of rice will be able to spend its daily cash supply on other food items and will thus eat sufficiently and have a more balanced diet.

A sack of rice will enable family providers to adequately feed their families for a month or more. Assuming an average family size of seven, which is a conservative estimate in Palestine, 2,450 people will benefit from this project, at least two thirds of them children. A mere four Euro are sufficient to improve a person’s nutrition for a whole month.

Dear LFT donors: When you sit down for your daily meals, think of those who look at an empty table and have to go to bed hungry. By giving a small part of what you spend on food every month, you can significantly improve their lives.

Here at SHE we havetackled a wide variety fitness routines and tips, but never during pregnancy. There could not be a more vital time during a woman’s life to keep fit and healthy. During this period a woman’s exercise needs will change month by month and a fitness routine will need to adapt accordingly. Read on for the many benefits Pilates has to offer during pregnancy.

Lewis Hamilton and Nicole Scherzinger

Pilates was founded by German-born Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. He presented his method as a series of controlled movements, which are a workout when properly practiced. The movements he put together are based on Eastern and Western Yogic positions to build strength, flexibility, muscle control and endurance. Because Pilates is a low-impact exercise, it’s perfect to adapt for women in any trimester of their pregnancies. The benefits of Pilates are:

• It teaches you body awareness

• It helps to improve posture, which in turn reduces strain on the joints

• It improves the body’s circulatory, lymphatic, respiratory and digestive systems

• It can teach relaxation and breathing skills, which will be invaluable during pregnancy and birth

• Improving pelvic stability. It helps to prevent pelvic girdle strain. “Pregnancy Hormones” soften your ligaments in preparation for pelvic expansion during birth. The drawback during pre-pregnancy is instability of your sacroiliac and symphysis joints (lower back and hips)

• Improving upper body shoulder and neck posture from the added weight of breast enlargement

• Reduction of back pain by creating a natural girdle of strength along the spine, as the baby gets heavier

• Balance and coordination is maintained as your body shifts its center of mass as the baby grows

• Supporting foot, ankle and knee joints under the increasing weight

• The pelvic floor can carry increased weight during birth and during postnatal recovery.

• It will help you to prepare for the hard work of labour!

Always seek medical approval and the guidance of a qualified exercise specialist before embarking on a new exercise program.

Second Trimester 13 - 26 weeks While the goal will be to keep your abdominals strong, this should be done with pelvic stability exercises rather than movements that involve flexion of your torso. As the pregnancy progresses, your abdominals separate to allow room for the baby and uterus to grow. It would be inadvisable to strengthen these muscles before in a shortened position until they have drawn back together again after birth.

Exercises at this stage will help to keep the body supple and flexible, but avoid over stretching or loading around the lower abdomen.

From week 16, back lying movements are removed from the program to avoid supine hypotensive syndrome (dizziness and low blood pressure caused by the weight of the uterus compressing the vena cava restricting blood flow to the heart when lying on your back).

Many Pilates movements will be adapted to a seated or standing position. For my clients who are able to exercise with a few lying positions, the key points to remember are to shift positions after three minutes and keep the limbs moving whilst lying on the back.

If you begin to feel dizzy, turn to your left.

Symmetrical movements support balance as your centre of mass changes from the growing baby and doesn’t overload the pelvic region. You may continue with prone (laying on your stomach) exercises until it becomes uncomfortable or up to 24 weeks.

Third Trimester 27 - 40 weeks

Continuing into the third trimester, work on movements that teach you how to relax your pelvic floor in readiness for the delivery of your baby. Include plenty of gentle squatting exercises as these help to open the pelvic outlet. Four-point kneeling is an excellent position in these later stages of pregnancy as it helps to position the baby for the birth.

The third trimester program has a lot of positional changes, as you will probably become uncomfortable in one position quite quickly. Further exercises will be adapted to a seated or standing by the wall position, and remember to take your time with transitioning from one movement to the next.

ISABELLE KAIF:You started off your career pretty young, modelling as a teen, what gave you the desire to start acting in film?

I was a dancer as a kid and so when I moved to India and I saw they danced in their films, I was like if I learn how to act I can do that and I can dance on stage. I can do these songs and that’s going to be amazing and all I wanted to do was dance. Then I moved to New York to study acting at Lee Stras-berg Theatre and Film and I fell in love with acting and that became more of a passion. It was a way to express myself artistically a bit more and that’s how I got into acting, it kind of caught me off guard. I didn’t expect to love it quite so much.

Dr. Cabbie touches on the challenges skilled im-migrants face when they come to Canada. Did you ever experience any similar sort of obstacles, being a women of mixed decent pursuing an acting career?

Well, I’m afraid I’m not nearly as qualified as the doctor in this film, but having gone to college in New York you hear these stories from the cab drivers, these professors from Russia, these engineers, law-yers, and doctors who are so qualified, so intelligent, but just can’t get the recognition of their degrees here and are forced to work at a lesser level. That really struck a chord with me. I thought it was a re-ally interesting way to treat immigration.

Entering the workforce upon acquiring your degree or education can seem like entering a foreign land of mystery and prestige. But what if you literally were entering the workforce in a foreign country? Canadian film, Dr. Cabbie, is a heartwarming and comedic journey that aims to bring light to the professional discrimination many immigrants face. Actor Vinay Virmani plays the lead role, Dr. Deepak Veer Chopra, an aspiring doctor who has just finished obtaining his medical degree in India, with hopes of practicing in Canada. He soon learns that foreign degrees are not always accepted and settles for becoming a cab driver along with Tony, a fellow cab driver and friend played by Kunal Nayyar. Although, Deepak’s true passion cannot be stifled as he begins treating people from his cab, becoming Dr. Cabbie. I recently had the opportunity to speak with three members of the cast, Dr. Deepak himself: Vinay Virmani, Tony: Kunal Nayyar, and Tony’s girlfriend: Isabelle Kaif. We discussed the film and the importance of workforce equality, especially to those who are highly skilled, but new to Canada.

Dr. Cabbie By Aly Zorn

Dr. Cabbie also portrays a message of perseverance and following ones dreams, did you have any words of advice for young professional South Asian women?

You know what? It’s just hard work. Keep at it! There’s going to be difficulties, there’s going to be obstacles in your path, but if it’s something you truly want just keeping going. Put a lot of hard work, dedication into it. It’s really about persever-ance and not giving up.

KUNAL NAYYAR:You play the character Raj on the hit TV show Big Bang Theory, and now Tony’s character in Dr. Cabbie, both being funny characters. What differences attracted you to Tony’s character?

Tony’s a character that lives his life with reckless abandon and that’s really fun because Raj is a character, who is also equally as fun to play, but a character who lives his life without reckless abandon, as you can imagine. So this was fun! Got to heckle at some ladies, show off some chest hair and just have complete freedom with the character. The majority of Dr. Cabbie was filmed in Toronto with such a diverse international cast and crew. What was it like working on such a large scale international project? It was great. We’re shooting all over the streets of Toronto and when we shot the rain scene we were literally downtown at 3:00 am in the morning… it was minus 4 degrees. I look up there’s all these machines putting fake rain on me and there’s 150 taxi cabs that I’m trying to maneuver. I slide on a hood of a car! So Fun.

Do you think Dr. Cabbie being a comedy will help Canadian and American audiences broach more easily on certain subjects like the professional discrimination immigrants face?

Yes! I hope so. I hope people laugh, I want people to have a good time and watch the movie, but I hope that more so then an immigrant story people really understand sometimes life doesn’t work out the way you expect it to. No matter what ethnicity you are. Every single person in the universe can relate to that. And when life takes a U-turn what are you going to do? You’re going to get back on your feet and try to figure out a way or are you going to sit back?

VINAY VIRMANI:You entered the film world with a bang, starring in and co-writing the movie Breakaway. What inspired you to pursue elements like writing?

I’ve always been a writer. I always pen my thoughts down and now it’s not so much pen, but Blackberry your thoughts down. I’m always constantly inspired. Images inspire me, people inspire me, quotes inspire

me and I’ve always kept a kind of journal of things. A lot of what you see in my films are actually based on real things. Breakaway for example… I grew up with guys who wanted to play ice hockey, but their parents didn’t want them to because in a South Asian household, no, sports are a waste of time or you know because of religious issues. Similar to Dr. Cabbie. It started off taking a cab ride in Toronto where I met a cab driver.

So the inspiration for Dr. Cabbie was inspired by a true story?

Ya, I met a cabbie who was a doctor and I heard his story, that his medical degree wasn’t recognized and that really moved me. It affected me. I heard him say something very deep, which was “I just came here to heal people… I wasn’t able to do that.” It’s a message of thousands.

Growing up in a culturally diverse city like Toronto you witnessed different stereotypes first hand. What was it like growing up in such a multicultural place?

I’m so fortunate and I’m blessed that I was born in Toronto, that I’m a Torontonian. I think we’re so accepting of each other, we’re so supportive of each other, we’re so well versed in each other’s cultures and traditions, but yet at the same time we can poke a little fun at each other as well. I remember being in school and celebrating Diwali! At my school in Oakvillle… Celebrating Diwali, which is the Indian New Year’s and the festival of lights. It’s those types of things, or celebrating Chinese New Year’s. Learning about that in schools is so important, and so whenever I produce films or write films I try to bring a bit of reflection of Toronto. I’m very adamant that we’re going to shoot in Toronto, for Toronto and we’re going to have a cast that really depicts what Toronto looks like.

What was it like working with Salman Khan, it being his first international project?

He’s undoubtedly the biggest movie star in the world. He’s an incredible human being, but beyond a star he’s a philanthropist as well. He has his charity called Being Human, and to represent that, to represent his brand was very special and I’m very honoured that he put his name on this film. My producing partner knows his team very well and when they asked what we were doing next she sent them the script and I met Salman as well, in L.A., and he really felt it was a very human story, a universal story as well.

Toronto Mayoral Debate: A Take on the South Asian

CommunityBy Aly Zorn

DOUG FORD

On September 26th at Ryerson University the mayoral candidates met for the ongoing 2014 Toronto Mayoral Debates,

but something was uniquely different about this debate. The discussion was centred on the issues and barriers the

South Asian community face, one of the fastest growing demographics in Toronto. According to Statistics Canada,

the South Asian population in Toronto accounts for over half of the entire population in Canada, meaning that about one quarter of all immigrants choose Toronto as their home; it is

imperative that the South Asian community be heard. Hosted by SAPNA, the South Asian Professional Networking Association and NET IP, the Network of Indian Professionals,

John Tory and Olivia Chow were given the opportunity to answer the unique concerns directly to the affected.

Page 81: Dr. Cabbie Exclusiveshemagazine.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/DEC-JAN-2015.pdfKunal Nayyar and Isabelle Kaif, sister of Katrina Kaif, talk to SHE during their movie premiere over on

SHE CANADA 81

JOHN TORY

The debate kicks off on a satirical note, stating that Toronto has the most educated taxi drivers in the world. Work place discrimination is a common thread for immigrants and both Chow and Tory agreed that the problem is a lack of resources and support. Toronto needs more organizations like “Career Edge,” which Tory claimed had an 85% job success rate. Programs such as these act as ramps into the work force, recruiting organizations to hire and partner with immigrants, while putting mentorship and language programs in place Chow explained. Career edge is one of Canada’s number one sources for finding paid internships that lead to jobs for diverse and skilled recent graduates. Tory also stated that we need to advocate and build recognition for these programs to receive help from the Provincial and Federal Governments. Higher levels of government need to realize there has to be a change in not only how Toronto, but also Canada assesses immigrants’ credentials.

With this issue there are two sides to the coin, and the next question asked how each candidate would promote diverse companies, not only immigrants as individuals. Opportunities for these types of businesses need to be made and diversity must be promoted within city jobs. A light needs to be shone on this issue and we need to reach out Tory stressed. The private sector must put more policies in place for minorities, as well as within city affairs he continued in his statement. Chow agreed that the lack of support for diverse business and lack of presence of diversity in city jobs is indeed real, and Toronto needs a better social procurement policy, a framework that will enable and support diverse businesses. Along with this she indicated that social procurement would provide a better chance for small businesses; we need to sell Toronto. Social

procurement will effectively align the city’s existing policies and practices with the South Asian community’s needs, promoting diverse services to help garner social development outcomes. It is clear that systemic discrimination is being tackled, but once these jobs have been created another question still poses a threat. The final debate question asked where are South Asian immigrants going to live? This raises the concern of the availability of affordable housing. Currently new applicants have the longest wait time and this October the Star reported that about 72,700 households in Toronto are currently waiting. Chow answered first by addressing that we need to create more financial incentives for developers, while fast tracking the approval process to one year. She continued in saying that Toronto also needs to capitalize on creating higher density neighborhoods, but must be smart about it. Less non-affordable homes should be built in these areas and rental housing needs to be built simultaneously. Tory retaliated with a different approach saying the answer lies in gaining Provincial and Federal help to fund not only housing, but also transit and infrastructure projects. Tory said Toronto needs to create infrastructure that will open up more available land, such as making more parking into underground facilities.

Overall the debate touched on some of the challenges the South Asian community in Toronto faces, providing insight into how these problems might be solved. Both Olivia Chow and John Tory have a heartfelt commitment to improving every part of the city. The election came to a close on Monday October 27th, naming John Tory Toronto’s new Mayor and in a direct statement to SHE Canada, Tory said he would represent the South Asian community throughout his term by inclusion. This means giving South Asian representatives seats at community debates and in city hall so that these hard working individuals can speak for themselves. While it’s the end of a Ford era, a new chapter has already begun to unfold. The South Asian community can feel a little more confident that their voices are being heard. As famous cellist Pablo Casals said, “The love of one’s country is a splendid thing, but why should love stop at the border?”

Right when we thought The Body Shop couldn’t outdo themselves, they outdid. SHE had the chance to attend the The Body Shop’s Holiday Preview event and needless say, it put us in the holiday spirit.

The event introduced us to many new products including every woman’s favourite: makeup. The new Lip & Cheek Stain Doll is a liquid-thin gel meant to be applied to your lips and cheeks, leaving a faint but rosy tint. This is especially helpful for those who can’t seem to get that winter glow through the cold. The Glitter Liquid Eyeliner comes in a shimmery shade, perfect for that night out, allowing you to sparkle without the tackiness.

Need that extra something to spruce you up before you leave the house? The Body Shop’s Vanilla Brulee Sparkler is the answer to your calls. Spray it on your skin and in your hair and you’ll be dazzling for hours on end.

The Body Shop also believes in giving back with every gift. With every purchase you make at The Body Shop, you send a child to school. Be sure to make your first gift purchases at The Body Shop this holiday season because you’re not only buying one gift, but you’re buying two.

The event itself was fantastic, and really put SHE the in mood to start our holiday shopping. The gifts along with the gift packaging looked spectacular (can we buy your gift wrap too?). The Body Shop knows how to put you in the mood for the holiday season (you need the body butter and lip balm sets, now!).
