DP Nicoli stocks 1" steel plates

in a wide variety of dimensions.

All DP Nicoli plates have

handling holes, lifting nuts and

DP Nicoli serialized/numbers on

both sides of each plate.

Steel Rumble Plates are designed to

remove debris and dirt from the underbody

of the vehicle leaving a jobsite. By driving

over the angle iron of the Rumble plate the

tread of the tire expands releasing lodged

dirt and mud.

DP Nicoli Arch Spreaders are pin-in place arches that are

interchangeable with 8” schedule 80 spreaders and fit

standard sidewall collars. The arches provide 96” clearance

on 8’ tall boxes, and 120” on 10’ boxes.

Manhole Shields

Manhole shields provide protection for manhole installations. DP Nicoli offers square, round and octagon shields that

are safe, convenient and easy to install. Some shields also have cutouts along the bottom edge to allow for use with

crossing utilities. Legs can also be used for additional clearance.

Optional Accessories: 2' Legs, lifting chains, different length spreaders.

Trench Shield & Shoring Specifications

These shields use 5" schedule 80 pipe for spreaders with a rated maximum length of 20'.

Hydraulic manhole shield walls are made of shoring panels with hydraulic cylinders on two opposite sides that allow the shield to telescope out and apply pressure against the trench wall.

Octagon | Bedding Boxes

Octagon boxes offer four-sided protection with a tremendous strength to weight ratio. Octagon boxes

are rated for deep excavations but are lightweight enough to be handled with light-duty equipment.

DP Nicoli Bedding Boxes (Stone Mizer) are available in four

sizes. The clearance between the lift bar and bedding box is 24”.

Bedding boxes reduce the time production crews wait for pipe

bedding transfers, as well as reducing the amount of cost for

wasted or spilled bedding.

Hi-Clearance Shores

Hi-Clearance Shores come in vertical heavy duty

whaler lengths of 10’ and 12’, and can be loaded

with cylinders ranging from 17” to 144”.

Depending on the soil classification the shore

allows for vertical clearance of up to 84”. High

clearance shores have the option of being

supplied with or without plywood. These shores

utilize hydraulic cylinders and can be used at the

bottom of an excavation with standard or

heavy-duty shores stacked on top.

Now you can turn your trench into a

3 or 4 sided pit by providing a

lightweight, safe and effective way

to shore the end of a trench without

the worry of sloping or benching.

End shores come in panel lengths

of 4’, 6’, 8’ and 10’. The panel can be

loaded with quick braces ranging

from 22” to 133”. Available with 4’,

6’, 8’ and 10’ aluminum lightweight

12” shoring panels.

Uses: Build-A-Box can be used for lineal trench lines, pit applications,

Hi-Clearance Hydra Shieds

High Clearance Aluminum Shields offer a light weight solution ideal for large diameter pipe and

bell holes. Hydraulic or static quick braces can be adjusted to provide up to 5’ 3” of pipe

clearance and when conditions allow can provide 7’ 3” of pipe clearance by using legs or riding

the shield 2’ from bottom of the trench. Optional aluminum sheeting at open ends can also be

used creating a three or four sided protective system. Optimal depths for use in high clearance

mode range 8 –12’. Available in 8’x 8’, 8’x 10’ and 8’x12’.

The Minus-One Trench Shield allows narrower trenches to be dug without reducing the working area of

the pipe-layer. Narrower trenches save substantial dollars by reducing backfill quantities, excavation, haul

away, dump fees and A/C restoration. Designed (to comply with OSHA standard) with a wall thickness of

1/2 inch, the standard trench box has a 4 inch or 6 inch wall. If you are currently using a trench box with 4

inch walls, your trench is 7 inches wider than needed with the Minus-One Trench Shield.

Linear Multiple Bay

Standard 8” schedule 80

spreader pipe is used in lineal

applications. Spreaders adjust

vertically. Use of the Efficiency

waler system in conjunction

with linear runs allows a

contractor greater flexibility in

the working area. An alterna-

trench shields.

Through the use of different lengths of spreader pipe, linear slide rail systems

can accommodate laying pipe of all sizes. As seen above, large diameter and

sided pit. Provides increased wall

Sheet Piling

DP Nicoli offers a wide variety of steel piling for rent or purchase, along with a full range of piling accessories. All DP Nicoli piling is

thoroughly inspected prior to delivery to ensure that it arrives straight, clean and ready for immediate use. Common dimensions are stocked

in sufficient quantity to meet most needs. Mill direct shipments may be required for large projects or unusual requirements.

Z-Sheet

With its high bending strength and Hoesch interlocks, Z sheet piling is ideal for

dewatering and many other heavy-duty applications. DP Nicoli offers hot-rolled,

interlocking steel Z sheet piling in varying grades and thickness. The piles are

supplied in pairs, with a width of 3.77’ per pair.

Arch Web Sheet

Arch web sheet pile lacks the bending strength of Z-sheet pile, but the lighter

weight and shallower profile offer important advantages. Arch web sheets offer a

neutral axis through the interlock. With a depth of only 6-inches, they can save

time and money by enabling tighter excavations.

Flat Sheet

Flat sheets are lighter, shallower, and can be driven in circular patterns. DP Nicoli

offers hot-rolled, interlocking flat sheets in varying grades and thickness.

Pipe Pile | H-Beam/Plate

Pipe Pile has a large surface area and concentric section modulus of steel pipe that makes it a

popular choice for many foundation applications. The pipe can be driven with the end open or

closed, and can be left hollow or filled with concrete. Depending on job requirements, steel pipe

can be rolled to length in several different sizes and drops can be cut off and welded together to

eliminate waste.

Optional Accessories: Inside or outside fit cutting shoes, conical points, pipe splicers, coating & end plates.

H-pile and wide flange offer convenient, flexible, low-cost piling

alternatives. They are used primarily for foundation piling, but are

well suited for many other applications. The large surface area is

particularly advantageous for friction piling. DP Nicoli stocks a wide

variety of domestically produced, bare, hot-rolled steel H-pile and

wide flange. Any length, section or quantity can be provided, from a

single piece to multiple carloads. Special orders can be accommo-

dated quickly and delivered straight from the mill to the job site.

Barriers, Bridges & Training

Barriers that are: faster, easier, cost efficient, and ready on a moments

notice! Rapid Deployment — The DP Nicoli Plastic Water Filled

Barriers offer 2 Man placement and easy Locking System. These light

weight (when empty) barriers are easy to transport, set-up, water fill

and offer the barrier protection you need without the hassels of

cement barriers.

Temporary Bridges. Provide a safe, OSHA-certified pedestrian

crossing over open excavations. This bridge allows full access for

disabled individuals, and meets the criteria of the Americans with

Disabilities Act. Four pick points make it easy to lift and position. It has an

inside width of 48" by 9’ and 12’ lengths, and weighs about 40-lb per

linear foot.

Competent Persons Training. In our pursuit of excavation safety DP

Nicoli offers contractors Competent Person Training. Your supervi-

sors, foreman and laborers can get the training they need to help

ensure a safe job site. DP Nicoli offers a 3 hour refresher course as

well as an 8 hour class for the first time attendant. These classes

cover trench excavations, soil analysis, proper shoring installation,

and confined spaces. This class is presented using slides and

attendees are encouraged to participate in our open discussions on

experiences they have encountered.

depth ratings, and sizing a shieldHow to Size a Trench Shield

OSHA’s excavation standard contains many different requirements as well as several appendices that can be confusing at first glance. The following information summarizes the main requirements in order to help contractors prepare the job site for OSHA inspections.

• Prior to digging, the contractor shall locate and identify all under-ground utilities such as sewer, telephone, fuel, electric, water lines, etc. that may be encountered during the excavation.

• The contractor must designate a competent person or qualified person to assess the excavation and determine that it is safe for project personnel to enter and work.

• All surface encumbrances such as signs, trees, fences, poles, sidewalks, etc. that create a hazard to employees must be removed or supported during the excavation.

• All excavating must maintain a minimum of 10 ft. from overhead power lines rated 50 kV or less, with 0.4 inches of clearance added for every kV over 50.

• Support systems shall be provided to ensure the stability of adjacent structures endangered by excavation operations.

• If excavation is over 5 ft. deep, a protective system such as a trench shield shall be used to prevent a cave-in.

• The contractor must provide a safe means of entering or exiting any excavation over 4 ft. deep.

• A means of egress from a trench such as a ladder, ramp, or stairway shall be located within 25 ft. of workers.

• Shielding systems shall be installed and removed in a manner that protects employees from cave-ins, structural collapses, or from being struck by members of the support system.

• Shielding systems shall be installed in a manner to restrict lateral or other hazardous movement of the shield in the event of a sudden collapse.

How to determine the depth of cut:

• Slope must start 18” or 1.5 feet below the top of the shield.

How to determine the width of a trench shield:

• Trench Shield width determined by O.D. of the pipe or the O.D. of the excavator bucket.

• Allow 6” of clearance on each side of the pipe bell.

• Shield should be a minimum of 12” wider than the excavator bucket O.D.

How to determine the length of a trench shield:

• Inside length clearance of pipe is approx. 2’ less than the overall length of the shield.

• Shield must be 2’ to 4’ longer than the pipe.

How to determine the machine lift capacity:

• 1.5 times the shield weight at 20’ radius at grade.

No Soil is Type “A” if:

• It is fissured. • It is subject to vibration. • It has been previously disturbed. • It is part of a sloped, layered system which

dips into the excavation on a slope of 4 horizontal to 1 vertical [4H:1V] or greater.

• It is subject to other factors requiring classification as less stable.

Type “B” Soil:

• Cohesive soil with unconfined compression strength greater than 0.5 tsf but less than 1.5 tsf.

• Granular cohesionless soils, e.g., gravel, silt, silt loam, sandy loam.

• Type “A” fissured or subject to vibration.

• Unstable dry rock.

• It is part of a sloped, layered system which dips into the excavation on a slope less steep than [4H;1V], but only if the material would otherwise be classified as Type “B”.

Type “C” Soil:

• Cohesive soils with unconfined compres-sion strength of 0.5 tsf or less.

• Granular soils including gravel, sand, and loamy sand.

• Submerged soil or soil from which water is freely seeping.

• Submerged rock that is not stable.

• Sloped, layered system which slopes into an excavation at an angle of 4H:1V or steeper.

Calculating Depth Ratings:

PSF ratings and depths are based on short exposure with excavation open a period of time equal to 24 hours or less.

Lateral pressure per foot of depth:

• Type “A” Soil = 25 lbs. • Type “B” Soil = 45 lbs. • Type “C” Soil = 60 lbs.

Depth rating using shield capacity (lbs.):

• 1200 / 25 = 48 ft. • 1200 / 45 = 27 ft. • 1200 / 60 = 20 ft.
