Viktor Emil Frankl (26 March 1905 – 2 September 1997)[ was an Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist as well as a Holocaust survivor. Frankl was the founder of logotherapy, which is a form of existential analysis, the "Third Viennese School of Psychotherapy".

His best-selling book Man's Search for Meaning From Death-Camp to Existentialism.

Page 3: DP & Frankl

Ein Psychologe erlebt das Konzentrationslager, meaning Nevertheless, Say "Yes" to Life: A Psychologist Experiences the Concentration Camp) chronicles his experiences as a concentration camp inmate, which led him to discover the importance of finding meaning in all forms of existence, even the most brutal ones, and thus, a reason to continue living. Frankl became one of the key figures in existential therapy and a prominent source of inspiration for humanistic psychologists.

Page 4: DP & Frankl

Freedom, however, is not the last word. Freedom is only part of the story and half of the truth. Freedom is but the negative aspect of the whole phenomenon whose positive aspect is responsibleness.

In fact, freedom is in danger of degenerating into mere arbitrariness unless it is lived in terms of responsibleness.

That is why I recommend that the Statue of Liberty on the East Coast be supplemented by a Statue of Responsibility on the West Coast

Page 5: DP & Frankl

Comment: Compare with DP explanation of Human Responsibility for Sin and Redemption!

Then, to what degree and to what extent would God predetermine the accomplishment of the will?

God's will to accomplish the purpose of the providence of restoration is absolute, but the accomplishment of the will is relative.

(I.e. Adam/Eve, Cain/Abel, Noah, Abraham, Isaac,Esau-Jakob, Moses John the B. …)

Page 6: DP & Frankl

So, it is predetermined that the will is to be accomplished, but only through God's 95 percent responsibility and man's 5 percent responsibility combined.

Indicating the proportion of man's responsibility as 5 percent is only to say that man's responsibility is extremely small compared to God's. Nevertheless, we must understand that, for man, it means 100 percent effort. /DP73

Page 7: DP & Frankl

Although God’s Will of the providence of restoration is absolute and beyond human influence, its fulfillment necessarily requires the accomplishment of the human portion of responsibility (p. 156).

Viktor Frankl on Reframing Suffering

Frankl was an Austrian psychiatrist who was imprisoned by the Nazis in 1944 because of his Jewish pedigree. After being released, Frankl described his three years in the concentration camps in Man’s Search For Meaning.

The book does not make for comfortable reading since Frankl chronicles the torments of mind, body and spirit that he and the other prisoners had to endure.

Page 14: DP & Frankl

But what intrigued me was when Frankl eloquently described how suffering enabled him and the other prisoners to understand what was truly important in life, and thus to be grateful for things that the rest of us take for granted.

Frankl described how conditions of extreme deprivation and cruelty enabled the prisoners to attain incredibly high levels of gratitude for tiny things, such as a colorful sunset or memories of family and loved ones. “We were grateful for the smallest of mercies”, he recalled.

Page 15: DP & Frankl

Despite the unimaginably difficult circumstances he had to endure, Frankl found that it was possible to reframe his suffering in positive terms even at the time.

Not everyone could do this, for many prisoners lost hope and gave up on life; however for those who clung to their spiritual integrity, it was possible to realize high levels of spiritual freedom and purpose even in the midst of so much deprivation, darkness and death.

Page 16: DP & Frankl

“Often it is just such an exceptionally difficult external situation which gives man the opportunity to grow spiritually beyond himself”, he wrote in his memoirs.

“The way in which a man accepts his fate and all the suffering it entails, the way in which he takes up his cross, gives him ample opportunity — even under the most difficult circumstances — to add a deeper meaning to his life.”

In the first worldwide course to restore Canaan, the central figure entrusted with the mission to restore the foundation of

faith was John the Baptist.

John the Baptist harbored doubts toward Jesus, even though he had testified to him, and he denied that he was Elijah even though he in

fact came to fulfill Elijah’s mission. This not only blocked the Jewish people’s path to Jesus, it even led them to oppose him (p. 269-270).

The foundation of faith which John had laid for the first course was invaded by Satan. Jesus himself now had to take on John’s mission and restore through indemnity the foundation of faith in order to set

out on the second worldwide course to restore Canaan.

Satan for the very purpose of restoring the foundation of faith. Because he was in such a situation, Jesus enjoined Peter not to reveal

Therefore, it is time for all people to be humbly obedient to Heaven’s decree. An unavoidable time is upon us today when we must invest ourselves completely with a life or death commitment for these remaining three years under the guidance of the True Parents who carry out the providence on earth as the substantial representatives of God, the King of Kings.
