ZOOS THROUGH TIME
Objectives• To analyse the role of the modern zoo• To discover how animals are cared for at Wellington Zoo• To learn about the Zoo’s conservation projects and identify how you can take action for wildlife and wild places too
Zoos or menageries as they used to be known have been around for thousands of years in Ancient Greece, Rome and Chinese civilisations. Why do you think zoos were first created?
Wellington Zoo has around 200, 000 visitors a year, many of them local. Why do you think people love coming to the Zoo?

Conservation is at the heart of everything we do at Wellington Zoo. We participate in regional and international breeding programmes and local conservation projects. Find out more about these projects on our website: www.wellingtonzoo.com (about the zoo - conservation/research)

Some of the ways we care for our Zoo animals is by regular health checks, using special training techniques, and providing enrichment, which encourages natural behaviours. See if you can spot any training and enrichment in the Zoo!
By visiting the Zoo you are helping animals too! How do you think your visit helps?
At the Zoo you will get to see a range of amazing animals up close. What is your favourite animal at Wellington Zoo?
