NASA-LCLUC Science Team Joint Meeting with MAIRS, GOFC-GOLD and SEA START Programs on Land-Cover/Land-Use Change Processes inMonsoon Asia Region, January 12-17th 2009
Background to the Workshop • Idea for the workshop developed following discussion
with MAIRS at the LCLUC Urumqi, Workshop– Opportunity to expand MAIRS activities in Monsoon SE Asia with
a focus on Land Use • Opportunity to strengthen collaborations in SE Asia
– Revitalize the GOFC/GOLD Regional Networks• Increasing number of spaceborne assets in the region,
China, India, Japan, Thailand – Opportunity to explore collaborations on satellite data acquisition
strategies, data sharing and exchange – Congratulations to GISTDA on the successful launch of THEOS
• Increasing convergence of several international program interests
NASA-LCLUC Science Team Joint Meeting with MAIRS, GOFC-GOLD and SEA START Programs on Land-Cover/Land-Use Change Processes inMonsoon Asia Region, January 12-17th 2009
NASA LCLUC• Land use change science (integrated natural and social
science) – Global to Regional Scale Focus– Funding regional case studies to understand LU processes
• Partnering with global and regional science programs e.g. NEESPI, CARPE, LBA, GLP, MAIRS
• Partnering with global programs e.g. GOFC, CEOS WGISS LPV • NASA projects encouraged to partner with regional scientists
– Examples of current emphases LUC impacts/consequences on • Biogeochemical cycling (carbon), water cycle• Climate change and CC impacts on LU e.g. agriculture, forestry• The built environment – urban and coastal zone
– Emerging emphasis on LU vulnerability, adaptation • Developing capabilities for periodic global assessments using
satellite assets – Global Land Survey 2000, 2005 and 2010– Global Forest Monitoring – Satellite data continuity through international partnerships
NASA-LCLUC Science Team Joint Meeting with MAIRS, GOFC-GOLD and SEA START Programs on Land-Cover/Land-Use Change Processes inMonsoon Asia Region, January 12-17th 2009
GOFC/GOLD• Focus on coordination of International Observations
– Land Cover Change, Fire, Biomass, Land Use• Current attention to
– GEO Tasks – Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation
(REDD)– Global Assessments– Satellite Data Continuity– Global Product Validation (w. CEOS CVWG LPV)
• Regional Networks – SEARIN (South East Asia Regional Information Network)
• had its roots in IGBP LUCC and SEA START > GOFC• Time to reassess network progress, objectives and future directions
– East Asia• under development
NASA-LCLUC Science Team Joint Meeting with MAIRS, GOFC-GOLD and SEA START Programs on Land-Cover/Land-Use Change Processes inMonsoon Asia Region, January 12-17th 2009
MAIRS and START • MAIRS
– Integrated Science Initiative (Monsoon region) • Land Ocean Atmosphere interactions the main focus• Emphasis to date from China
– Land Use (inherently Integrated Science) not currently a major focus
• Requires a combination of Natural and Social Sciences • Example Issues of regional relevance - food and water
supply, urban growth, forest management, carbon accounting, biodiversity
• SEASTART – Continued involvement to support regional scientists
involvement in Global Change Research– GOFC START activities supported by NASA
NASA-LCLUC Science Team Joint Meeting with MAIRS, GOFC-GOLD and SEA START Programs on Land-Cover/Land-Use Change Processes inMonsoon Asia Region, January 12-17th 2009
Objectives of the Workshop • Sharing information on recent research
findings and methods • Sharing information on current and planned
programs• Sharing information on regional satellite and
ground based observing systems • Understand current regional priorities and
issues concerning LCLUC • Identify opportunities for increased and new
international collaborations
