“Life is no brief candle to me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got a hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it onto future generations.” George Bernard Shaw
Welcome to our Winter Newsletter and all things on the Eden Alternative. Winter
provides us with the opportunity to pause for thought and reflect how we are
continuing to warm the soil and encourage the heart of staff, residents, families and
wider community to embrace the Eden philosophy of resident directed care. It might
have been cold, but we can still keep our minds on creating a habitat where growth
occurs willingly and with great heart. See you in the Spring...regards Sally Hopkins,
Business Development Manager, Eden Alternative Trainer & EARC.
6TH INTERNATIONAL EDEN ALTERNATIVE CONFERENCE UPDATE—May 30 – June 1, 2012
Delegates from Europe, the USA, Australia, New Zealand
and Canada were a part of the 350+ attendees to the bi-
annual Eden Alternative International Conference in
Michigan USA. Highlights of the conference included on
the 1st day, the main plenary session which focused on
worldwide innovation in the Eden Alternative. Currently,
the Eden Alternative can be found growing in Australia,
New Zealand, Denmark, Sweden, Netherlands, East &
West Canada, the USA, Faroe Islands, Finland and the newest country—South Africa. A display
stand also showcased Eden Alternative Worldwide.
The number of ideas shared and the networking achieved is important. We visited homes built
under the GreenHouseTM model. We heard wonderful stories from amazing people. As Sarah
Rowan profoundly noted in her opening address to the Eden gathering “there are 600 sorrows and
600 joys in life...how many are you still to experience?” and Connie Goldman added, “If stories
come to you, treasure them. Learn to give them away when they are needed”.
Check out our photo gallery for more or www.edenalt.org for more on the conference.

Eden from the frontline...sharing your stories My 30 day goal is to encourage the resident to assist with the simple every day activities in the dining rooms. They may help by setting the tables, filling the jam and sugar containers, assist with the clearing of the tables. These may be minor activities but these duties will give the residents the feeling of helpfulness. Don't give up! Once you have the buy in from your organisation just run with it, it is surprising how much can happen, it really only takes one person with the 'bug' and everyone follows. I have been surprised how energised our Associates have become because I am also alongside them and have the understanding now and want to make this happen. Bronwyn D

FROST HAPPENS….what happens when the Eden Alternative journey seems to stall!!! Reviewing Principle 9
Ever felt that either your own personal Eden journey, or that of your organisation is ‘going nowhere fast’? That you’re spinning your wheels and not getting any trac-tion? Well we’re here to tell you that you are in a period of ‘frost’...where nothing or very little is happening. This could be due to a number of factors, most often related to loss of significant personal or key Eden drivers. It could be due to new business acquisition; a change in the CEO or other senior staff (who don’t under-stand the Eden Alternative); Accreditation….which shouldn’t really affect how the Eden Alternative is implemented if the philosophy is embedded into your culture of care and is a living, breathing culture.
WE know that when homes or organisations lose good staff there is a time of inaction...a loss of momentum. A pause if you will. For some homes or organisations this can be quite a catastrophic time as good people continue to try their best without the support from those around them or above them. Managing the day to day becomes the main fo-cus...which defaults to the medical model response...institutional ‘creep’ occurs. Principle 9 looks at Vision, Education and Implementation as the three key areas that need to be acknowledged as a pre-requisite for success in the Eden Alternative. Go back into Haleigh’s Toolkit for a copy of the Foolish Gardener. Read the Foolish Gardener and ask if that is you….and know that Frost will happen. There are three stages in gardening and growing the Eden Alternative. Planting the Seed—our work is human work, not mechanical work. ...and...the work of making better worlds for our Elders and ourselves requires us to stop thinking like mechanics and start thinking like gardeners”. “The truth is that frost is inevitable, painful and ultimately useful. Useful? Frost does two things well. Frost kills and it cleanses. Think about frost in the garden. True it ends the harvest season for some crops but not for all. After the frost the earth is given a time for rest and rejuvenation. Frost kills only the plants in the garden. It does not destroy the gar-den itself. Only the gardener can do that…..despair, not frost, is the ultimate enemy of the Eden Alternative. If we retain hope, our garden can bloom again.” So we say to you, don’t despair as there are many homes and organisations who have experienced deep, frozen environ-ments where all the good works seems to have been undone. “When frost comes to your Eden Alternative, call it by name. Don’t be ashamed of it. Do not attempt to hide from it. When you have mourned your losses, warm the soil and plant the seed. It will grow again, this time better and more bountifully than the last.” Ref: The Eden Alternative Handbook p118-123.
Tending the Garden—Making mistakes is a part of life and learning from them teaches each member of the community the value of these mistakes.
Gathering the Harvest—you will need HUMILITY, FORGIVENESS AND PATIENCE. Remember it is all about “Baby steps”….and that your success may take you longer...bring the team with you. Go back to basics...restart your learning circles. What is really important to residents and staff? Ask those important questions and learn from these lessons. Speak to others about how they have overcome FROST...and work towards re-gathering the harvest.
Eden from the frontline...sharing your stories A story from yesterday; we had a new resident (M) join us in Fern haven. She arrived around 11.00am and immediately engaged with the residents and her two daughters who had brought her down from Cambridge where she was living in a dementia unit. I happened be in Fern haven during lunchtime . (M) was calmly sitting at the table with a group of elders enjoying her lunch and whilst quiet, her conversation was lucid and calm. Her daughters returned to the dining table after setting up (M)’s bedroom. They both had startled looks on their faces and tears began to fall- I asked them if everything was ok. A (M's daughter replied) Mum has been eating pureed food for the last three months and most of the time someone has to feed her. She's only been here an hour and look at her- she's eaten all her (solid) lunch with her knife and fork and now she’s using her fork and spoon to eat her dessert...and they are served from china crockery ! WOW- this is amazing”! I was kind of shocked by the immediate improvement myself...but replied that this is just what the Household model does; these beautiful miracles are a privilege to witness. We were all holding back tears. Juliette T—Rangiura Rest Home &

The first stage of culture change in aged and community care looks at how we first change ourselves..personal
transformation…and think of others and not ourselves
My 30 day goal which was to develop an education session for the Eden Alternative and incorporate it into our training program has been completed. The first training session was held on 1 May and was well received. I conducted a learning circle where the topic was “what can you personally do to reduce the three plagues of loneliness, helplessness and boredom?” Several suggestions were to be positive, reassure staff they have management support, have better self discipline and time management. Eden in Oz & NZ website – I explored all areas of the website, one area I really like was the page on becoming an Eden Associate, as I was having doubts whether I could be an Eden Associate. After reading that I realized that I can make a difference. Joy H, Mercy Aged Care CQ.

Eden from the frontline...sharing your stories “I have had a meeting with all of our Associates to discuss the principles we currently have and we are all looking at a principle each to ascertain where we are at now and what we could do to reinvent . We have held another Eden Committee meeting of which we have two resident reps. This was a very interesting exercise for the staff as the residents were very honest about how they perceived some things that were happening. I also gave my elevator speech to this meeting which was very thought provoking for all. We did the ‘what's your daily pleasure?’ which also generated some very thoughtful dis-cussion. My goal was to hold Staff Education Sessions and the first of these is tomorrow. We held a Residents Meeting on the 10th and we put forward the ideas that came from the Eden Commit-tee i.e. Renaming our wings to be like a street address, having memory boards in each group so that the residents can put photos of their family up for us all to see and also so that we can learn more about them, we talked about our welcome and farewell process and what they would like to happen, we dis-cussed having a flexible buffet breakfast time, all of these ideas were well received so we will take them back to the committee to be drawn up and the residents on the committee will drive the communication to the residents.”

With the help from maintenance putting up the hooks and the OK from Management to put up the signs, my 30 day challenge of adding pictures around the home is making good progress. I have placed several blue dots around the facility where I would like hooks to be placed. Hooks are slowly going up and there are now some pictures up here and there. With the help from other staff members placing pictures underneath the blue dots has been really helpful. So as soon as the hooks are up there is a picture going up on a wall. Sarah N
