EDEN CONTACT

My how time flies, the second edition of our newsletter is here!

It is with great sadness that I have to report on the passing on of Elma and Trevor Davis. These two people have left a huge empty space not only in our district, but nationally and internationally. We will miss them both.

We are fortunate in that Justine has offered to take on the coach’s convenor portfolio and will be running the ZTDP practices.

We held a most encouraging and uplifting Council meeting, at which all the clubs except four were present. The meeting had such a positive air about it. Thank you to all of the club presidents and/or their representatives for all the new ideas and positive feedback given at the meeting.

Thank you, Vlam, for your continued commitment with our district’s greens. Most clubs reported an improvement in their playing surfaces. Keep up the good work and good bowling.

S M A L L B O W L SBEFORE AND AFTER

Dozens of clubs all over SA have had their old sets of bowls retooled to small sizes suitable for modern players. The late Trevor Davis drove the Small Bowls project.

The project took a long time to get of f t he g round but f ina l ly succeeded, wit h supp or t of Stuttaford Van Lines (to transport the bowls) and Paktools (which cre-ated the tools to reduce the bowls in size).

Although the resulting bowls are the correct size and players, partic-ularly new lady and junior bowlers, happily play with them, they are not the most attractive bowls out there.

However, Alhan van der Merwe of Outeniqua Bowls Club came up with a plan to improve the appear-ance of the bowls. The photos show the progression of the bowls from old and large, to small and handy, to absolutely gorgeous!

For tips on how to improve the look of your small bowls, contact Alhan van der Merwe on 079 875 5493.

There can’t b e many b ow l ing districts in South Africa where the number of bowling greens is on the increase.

Outeniqua Club recently opened its third green, thanks to the efforts of the president, Greg Young, the club members and various sponsors in-cluding Kirsten & Tulleken Vervoer and K1 Quarries. It was a long, hard haul to get there. Also Outeniqua has managed to secure a further 9-year lease on the c lub’s fac i l i t i es f rom G eorge Municipality.

GEORGE“March and April have been ex-tremely busy ones at George. In March we saw the final rounds of our Sotheby’s summer business league with 28 teams competing for the big prizes.

The high level of competitive bowls produced gives us high hopes for the future of our fantastic game. The ultimate winners were George High 1 overcoming an extremely competitive York high team. Run-ners up were FNB Spartans. In the Plate the winners were Mazars with

Team RICOH closely behind.

Also in March was our new Au-tumn Trips competition which replaced the traditional Easter Trips. The event saw 22 teams from various clubs fighting it out over two days. The ulti-mate winners were the team from Still Bay led by Mariana van der Walt.

At home club competitions continued unabated. In early April the

Senior Singles were held. As week-end time is restricted with District and National competitions, the event was held on weekdays.

On the ladies front Crystal Barlow overcame a spirited Martie Pringle in an exciting game. Rob Markham won the men’s beating Stuart Marchant in a late afternoon finish.

The weekend of 11 and 12 May had us holding our pairs competition. Eventual winners were Crystal B ar low and Mar t ie Pr ing le winning the ladies and Henk Barnard and Francois Lamprecht the men’s. By far the biggest honour in April came from a team of our ladies winning this year’s All Cape held in Port Elizabeth. Skipped by Wendy Murray with Jenny Sinclair, Mar-tie Pringle and Petro Breedt they swept the opposition aside. Well done!

May began with another major win for our club with Morné Pien-aar and his mother Rina sweeping aside all opposition in the District Mixed Pairs.

The finals were played at Outeni-qua with both semi-finals and final producing some amazing bowls. In the semi-final the game was played against another George team of Mike McCarthy and Johlene Bronkhorst.

After the regulation 21 ends the score was peeled necessitating an extra decider end. The final was just as exciting with Morné and Rina overcoming strong opposi-tion from Japie Combrink and Judy Swart.”

“Sedgefield celebrates the Easter weekend with a festival known as the Sedgefest. Lots of activities are organised, and the community and business’s turn out in the colour of orange.

Activities include a parade through the town on the Sunday morning, raft races, sand castle building and concerts. The very first activity held

on Thursday evening is the ever popular Bare Foot Bowls held at our club, where we invite the com-munity and business’s to enter a team.

This year we had a good turnout and teams came dressed in fancy dress with a touch of orange. Club members took part in the Sedge-field street parade held on Easter Sunday as part of the Sedgefield Slow festival. It was a rainy day, hence the umbrellas and rain coats.(See front page)”

At least once every month the club organises a social event. It started with a pensioner’s dinner at Searles Restaurant in May 2018, attended by a mere eighteen members and partners.

In June the Pinnacle Point pension-ers dinner followed, the next time, Pizza-e-Vino, then again Pinnacle

Point followed by Route 57 and the las t out ing at King f i sher was attended by thirty-seven people. Many single elderly members get an opportunity to eat-out and enjoy a social evening with friends.

Daarna is lekker bingo gespeel.

The ‘Vista Girls’- group of ladies has also contributed to a number of memorable events. The movies and tea in George haveled to few other lady-events. The ‘Dames-in-Pajamas’-event included some blindfolded bowling, in pyjamas, which turned out to be great fun.

The ‘Vista Girls’ also treat each lady on her birthday with a tea-outing to some special place. The ladies also arrange something special for every member that turns 80, to celebrate the blessing to be healthy enough to still play bowls at such an age.
