• Bradford epitomizes the spirit of determination and self-sacrifice that is characteristic of the Pilgrims

• Bradford was elected governor shortly after the Pilgrim’s arrival in Massachusetts

• His father died when he was an infant, mother remarried–Was raised by his paternal

grandparents and uncles

• At around 12 years of age, he heard some sermons by a non-conformist minister: Richard Clyfton–These sermons significantly changed

Bradford’s life and he aligned himself with Clyfton’s preaching–This group called themselves

“Separatists”

• Bradford was self-educated and deeply committed to the Separatist cause
