Big weekend on tap for Manistee County businesses
The stars are alignedfor a really great
weekend for busi-nesses in Manistee County.Labor Day weekend is oneof the most heavily traveledweekends of the entire yearand the end-of-summerimpulse is to head outsideand to the beach.
As our guests arrive inManistee for the last bigsummer weekend, thereare three goals we shouldbe setting to make sure
their experience reallystands out. First, lets makesure our community looksfantastic flowers, ban-ners, clean parking lots andsidewalks. Theres nothingmore disheartening for a
tourist at the end of sum-
mer than a town that lookslike its about to shut downfor the winter. Second,
we need to have our Agame on, because peopleremember their LaborDay activities far into thefuture and its our job to besure that they rememberManistee as a truly special, friendly place that theycant wait to visit again. Finally, lets take advantageof a few extra weeks duringthe shoulder season and
invite visitors to return ina week or two, when thecrowds are gone, but the
weather is still perfect andthe community offers lotsof special activities andevents in September andOctober.
Endless summer maybe not. Endless
warmth you bet.

Ponderingwith P.J.
We have a garden crisis. Were not sure about
the watermelon crop. Werethinking they should be get-ting ready, but how do youreally know when they areripe?
I consider myself quitea learned melon thumper. But, the truth be known, this bending over andthumping them on theground is a great deal morestressful than thumpingthem in a display in a gro-cery store.
I just experienced agroup thumping last week. Ithought I was approaching
a conga line, but alas, it wasjust three ladies bent overa watermelon bin thump-ing to their hearts content. It was a site to behold. Itshould be noted, the bin
was almost empty, so theview was quite an attentiongrabber.
It was only by the graceof the Almighty that one ofthe ladies didnt end up inthe bin. She was a scrappylittle thing, 200-225, easy.It appeared another lady
was moving in to thump a
melon the featherweighthad in a hold pattern andher quick move to scarf ifup threw her off balance a
bit. One hind leg flew up inthe air as her extended armswiped the air, but she gother melon without collision.
I waited until they hadmade their selections beforeI stepped forward. I have anever-fail method to deter-mine if a watermelon is ofhigh quality. I lean over the
bin and thump a melon andthen thump my belly. I keepthumping melons until I
find the melon that soundsthe most like my belly. Theonly thing that throws me is
whether Im really hungryor if I just had lunch. Thethump is a little off if Ive
just had something to eat,so I try to buy all my mel-ons around two oclock.
Back on the farm on thePlains of Pleasanton, FootHills of Malcolm, my dad
would plug the melons tosee if they were ripe. I sus-pect your local grocer wouldfind fault with that method.
Dad would take out hisjackknife, unfold it care-fully and shake out all thesand and then cut a smalltriangular wedge out of themelon about an inch to aside. He could tell by thecolor of the tip of the wedgeif the melon was ripe andif it wasnt he just put theplug back in the hole and
waited a bit longer to har-vest the specimen.
There were occasionswhen youngsters thoughtit was great fun to steal mydads melons. This was nota sport of which he was verfond. In fact, if he heardany kind of commotion inthe wee hours of the nighthe was not opposed tounloading a few rounds ofrock salt from his shot gunin the general direction ofthe garden. He refrainedfrom doing that again aftertaking a look at the bedsheets my mother had left

to make sure the color scheme matchedthe decor of the childrens library. It ismaking a very nice addition to the room.
They wanted something to depictManistee, so I am going to have things likethe Coast Guard Station, the bottle house, and freighters, said Marshall. I also
wanted to promote books everywhere.Marshall said she received the commis-
sion to paint the mural in May, but due tothe summer library programs, she wasntable to begin work until August. However, the additional time proved to be a blessingin disguise.
It really gave me the time think itall out, and measure everything out the
way I wanted it, said Marshall. I worksomewhere else three days a week, and Ichanged my schedule around so I can wormore consistently here. I am thrilled andhonored to be granted this opportunity, and 50 percent of the fee I get for doing itis going back to the library.
The end result will be a perfect envi-ronment to let those young imaginationscontinue to grow and expand. It is the per-fect way to stimulate them into becomingthe thinkers and leaders of tomorrow.
MURAL:FROM PAGE 1
P.J.:FROM PAGE 6on the clothesline overnight. The sheetsseemed to be considerably more ventilatedthan when they were originally hung. It
was thought their location in reference tothe watermelon patch may have been afactor.
After that unfortunate episode, Dadswitched to loading the melons. He usedthe plug method but made the hole largeenough to drill out some of the contents
and drain its juices. Hed replace themelon juice with Castor Oil or some otherawful concoction and replace the plug.
After one episode of that, our midnightmelon marauders found better pickinselsewhere.
Having a good garden offers a great
sense of accomplishment. The spouse hasreally outdone himself this year. Everyother day he brings home more produceand Ive canned or frozen most of it. I feellike a squirrel storing nuts for winter.
I really outdid myself one day by can-ning 25 quarts of pickled beets. I enjoyedtasting the tender globes as I filled the jars.I may have overdone the tasting part. I hadforgotten how the deep red color of the
beet travels through the digestive system. That first trip to the bathroom gave me apanic attack. I thought I had been stabbed!
Canning can be dangerous ...As Usual, PJ
