Washburn Weekly Update November 4th to 8th, 2019

in terms of days of school because of the holidays. In this weekly I will cover this week’s important
activities and dates and the remainder of the month.
.Reminders and activities this week:
1) Tuesday, November 5, Grades 4 to 6 will attend the play Pepe Gorras at the Pontifical Catholic
University in Ponce from 8 am to 12 noon.
2) Wednesday, November 6, Grandparents Day at the Community College from 1:30 to 3:00 pm ,
Grades 4 to 6
3) Friday, November 8, Career Day
4) The elementary level Science Class Fair have been postponed for the second semester. As
soon as Mrs. Trickett comes back in January 2020, you will be notified of the date. We
apologize for the inconvenience.

2) November 18 to 22, Science Fair- Community College. It is subject to change.

Valor del mes: Resiliencia El Día de Acción de Gracias (“Thanksgiving” en inglés) tiene lugar el jueves, 28 de noviembre de 2019. Es una festividad muy arraigada en los Estados Unidos, que reúne en torno a una mesa a familiares y amigos. Se realiza todos los años el cuarto jueves del mes de noviembre. Esta fiesta comenzó a celebrarse de forma oficial en 1863 por iniciativa del presidente Abraham Lincoln. Era una forma de “dar las gracias” y conmemorar la primera cosecha que los colonos ingleses tuvieron tras la llegada a Norteamérica. Esa primera cosecha tuvo lugar en la colonia de Plymouth (Virginia) en 1621. Ofrecieron una “comida de agradecimiento” a los indios wampanoag, quienes ayudaron a los colonos el otoño anterior, ofreciéndoles alimentos para sobrevivir en el nuevo continente. En 1941 el Día de Acción de Gracias fue declarado “día festivo” por el Congreso de los Estados Unidos. Actualmente, representa la gran tradición norteamericana, que se fundamenta en los valores de la familia y la unidad. Magaly Jiménez Peña Trabajadora Social Saludos padres, madres y estudiantes: Esta semana les comparto información relacionada a los estilos de crianza. La psicóloga estadounidense Diana Baumrind creó una teoría en la que relaciona el comportamiento de los padres, que lleva intrínseco un modelo de crianza determinado, y el resultado que obtiene en los niños. Según la Dra. Baumrind, los padres, con respecto a la crianza, nos dividimos en tres categorías: Autoritario, Permisivo y Democrático. Cada uno de ellos tiene unos comportamientos totalmente distintos y así se reflejan en el carácter y comportamiento de sus hijos. La psicóloga llegó a estas conclusiones después de estudiar a numerosos grupos de escolares, y a sus familias, para descubrir que, de forma global, nuestro modo de crianza se ajustaba a sólo tres modelos. De hecho, sus estudios han sido totalmente reveladores, siendo publicados en distintas revistas especializadas y sirviendo como base a otros tantos estudiosos de la educación infantil. AUTORITARIO. En este grupo entrarían los padres que exigen mucho a sus hijos y, sin embargo, no ofrecen alternativas u otros puntos de vista. Su frase más famosa es: «Esto lo haces porque lo mando yo» o «Es así porque yo lo digo». Aplican una educación firme y rígida, por lo tanto los niños no tienen nada que aportar ni decidir. Esto les lleva a ser niños inseguros, que no se relacionan con normalidad en la sociedad y en la escuela tienden a no finalizar sus tareas, además no tienen iniciativa propia ya que necesitan de órdenes para poder avanzar. PERMISIVO. Es el que se encuentra en el otro lado de la balanza frente al autoritario. En este caso, el padre permisivo no fija ningún control sobre su hijo, no atiende a reglas ni normas, y deja que su hijo haga todo lo que le plazca en cualquier momento. El gran problema de estos niños es que no entienden que la sociedad sí impone una serie de límites que hay que cumplir, por lo que llegan a ser, casi, unos inadaptados en un mundo que le es hostil. Suelen ser impulsivos y carecen de autocontrol, por lo que la relación con los demás es bastante complicada. DEMOCRÁTICO. Se trata, sin duda, del modelo más acertado ya que comparte ciertas ideas con el modelo autoritario pero sin esa presión y estrictos límites que impone. Los padres democráticos son los que animan a sus hijos a ser independientes y valerse por sí mismos, además de ser comunicativos y respetuosos con los demás. Son fieles seguidores de las normas y las reglas que imponen la sociedad y la buena educación, pero al mismo tiempo son razonables, escuchan a sus hijos y dan calidez y comprensión a sus razonamientos. Con ello consiguen crear niños maduros, libres y seguros de sí mismos. “Cada día es una nueva oportunidad para aprender y mejorar.”
