Hello Again,
December 15, 2012
Last night I was caught between a rock and a hard spot. About 10:00 when I was locking thekitchen outside door, the doorbell rang. I pulled the curtain back to see who was there and astrange fellow dressed in a green suit, topped with a pointy bright red hat wasstanding there with his back to me looking at the garage door.
I didn’t know whether to unlock the door or not but remembered the outer screen door wouldstill be latched. With that, he turned facing me with a great ear-to-ear smile and said“Greetings, Sir.” I instantly realized he would create no disturbances. I unlatched the door andstepped out into the portico.
“What can I do for you, sir?” I asked. His answer nearly bolted me over. “Sir,” he said. “I amthe head teamster of Santa’s Christmas Gift Sled and we are faced with an overwhelmingcatastrophe.” Still half stunned, I asked, “Who is the ‘we’ you are referring to?” and he said,“Santa and me, as well as the rest of his staff.”
“You see, sir, Santa’s entire reindeer team did not get their flu shot this fall and right downto Rudolph, every one of them is too sick to pull Santa’s sled. Santa said to tell you, or ratherask you, if he could use your bright three-wheeled cycle to pull his sled this year?”
After a moment or two I said yes, but how could he possibly use it? It has hydraulic brakesand not air brakes and uses gasoline. He replied, “Santa has already figured that out. He hadour blacksmith shop build an air hook and whenever he needs to stop, he will toss it out. Asfar as the need for gasoline fuel, you have to remember he will be driving downhill most of thetime when he leaves the North Pole and he always looks forward to stopping at Stewarts fortheir dark chocolate ice cream.”
With definite trepidation, I agreed Santa could use my three-wheeler and backed it out ofthe garage, turned it around facing William Street. With that, the reindeer herdsman jumpedon without turning left or right, went straight up into the sky and out of sight. With that I ranover to our lawn to get a better view and all I could see heading due north was a white jetstream, climbing above the clouds.
I imagine its motor will make more noise than the reindeer so if you listen carefully ChristmasEve, you may hear it landing on your roof. I just hope Santa’s air hook invention works. Andthat’s the way it happened, given a little bit of blarney or more. Possibly next spring when thesun comes back to the Mohawk Valley, you will get to see the three-wheeled red Spyder again.
I just checked the date on my cell phone. By the time you read this we will have less thantwo weeks to prepare for Christmas morning. Can you or would you ever have imagined thatcitizens of this most wonderful, bountiful nation would try to reduce the day of Jesus’ birthto have no more meaning than any of the national holidays set aside to honor GeorgeWashington, Abraham Lincoln, or Martin Luther King? Does this mean that Jesus Christ hasbeen reduced to their level or have they been raised to an equal position to Jesus? Now shouldthey be thought equal to the creator and savior of this world? Are they now gods?
Can you imagine an American soldier surrounded by the enemy in a foxhole over in a foreigncountry praying, “Dear George Washington,” or “Dear Abraham Lincoln,” or “Dear Martin Luther
Original Valley PENNYSAVER • December 15, 2012 Page 7
King, please save me? The enemy is all around me. I do not want to die. I want to go home to
America and my family.”
Frankly, it would seem to me to be more intelligent to believe in Santa Claus with his team
of reindeer and Rudolph with his red nose than to accept the nonsense in believing we should
believe Christ Day - Christmas Day - should be replaced by the meaningless and heartless
word - holiday.
Even though time is running out, we can still buy a gift or even make one and give it to a
friend and loved one. It will say, “Merry Christmas and I do care.”
Always looking for a chance to make a quick buck, if I offer the red Spyder at auction as
the three-wheeler Santa (a world renown celebrity) used at Christmas, do you think I might
make a killing?
Before you accuse me of penning a batch of blarney — maybe you should watch for and
listen and hear what mode of transportation Santa is using this year.
Writing all of this serious chatter is very exhausting so if you don’t mind, I will intentionally
fill in with a little blarney.
My wife was complaining to her friend — the one we call the “cookie thief” — that I am
becoming quite forgetful. “He forgets his coat, keys, and even wallet. I sent him down to the
Little “M” for some lemons, and I don’t know if he’ll remember to come home.”
As the cookie thief was sympathizing with my wife, I burst into the kitchen yelling, “You’ll
never guess what happened to me! I won the million-dollar lottery!” “See,” my wife said, “He
forgot the lemons.”
This year, my wife suggested that we do not send material gifts to our 23 children,
grandchildren, and greats. “What should we send?” I asked. “Something we earned and
treasure,” she answered. “Money.”
The only problem I could see — is everyone would be receiving too little or too much which
depends upon who is sending or who is getting.
The good Lord has already given me a wonderful Christmas gift. My wife is back home and
her health seems to be improving every day. I wish I could thank all of you personally for your
loving wishes, cards, food, and prayers.
Thank you, and God be with you. My prayer for you is that you will receive all that you need
to be both healthy and happy, and that your prayers based on God’s will — will be answered.
Remember to say hello to your neighbors. If you send up a prayer for them, it will be heard.
Remember the old saying, “It is more blessed to give than receive.”
Fred Lee and the Lee Family
P.S. If you are thinking about a New Year’s Resolution, there is already one in the lay-a-way
department waiting to be used. “Be resolved to locate a bible-teaching, Christ-believing
church this year and attend.”

by Elizabeth A. TomlinIt’s that time of year
again and Santa andthe elves were out infull force despite thesteady rain inCanajoharie andPalatine Bridge onFriday evening, Dec. 7.
“It was a greatevening, even thoughwe had rain,” com-mented Canajoharie-Palatine Chamber ofCommerce President,Dolores Jacksland. “Ithink the merchantswere all happy. Therewere people in all ofthe stores, the streetswere filled and themuseum was filled.”
Elves Night Out hasbeen taking place in thevillage of Canajohariefor many years.
According toJacksland, the carol-ing around the treehas been taking placesince WWI, when itbecame a tradition inhonor of the military.“I’m quite sureBarbara Spraker wasresponsible for pro-moting that,”Jacksland acknowl-edged. This year it hadspecial meaning to usbecause the datecorresponded withPearl Harbor.”
Jacksland said theaddition of the elvesoccurred about 15years ago.
This year anothernew feature wasadded with the ringingof local church andold school bells.
The event beganwith the ringing ofhand bells byCanajoharie CentralSchool DistrictSuperintendent Debo-rah Grimshaw andSchool Board VicePresident Eric Trahanin Canajoharie’s vil-lage park, followed bychurch bells soundingfrom Stone Arabiathrough PalatineBridge and then mov-ing throughoutCanajoharie from onebuilding to another.
“When the bellsrang it gave you goosebumps!” admittedJacksland. Folks onthe street all stoppedand listened as the oldWest Hill School Bellrang. “It’s been about20 years since theWest Hill bell rang!”Jacksland declared.
Another bell heardfrom was the old his-toric school inPalatine Bridge.
Also added to this
year’s festivities was agingerbread village, which was displayedat Ace Hardware inPalatine Bridge.Although the Cham-ber of Commerce pur-chased the kits, mer-chants created theirown designs andmade their own gin-gerbread houses fit-ting their store’sdescription. The gin-gerbread houses arenow all displayed inthe store windows inCanajoharie.

This tool is known as a firekindler and once was aninstrumental part of colonialAmerican homes. The endwas soaked in kerosene andused to start the fire in awood stove.
Wood was once the majorform of fuel and cooking. Theaverage colonial family used30-40 cords per year, theequivalent of one acre ofwoods, to heat their homesand to cook their meals.
Wood was the materialmost available and most eas-ily shaped, thus it could beused to make a wide varietyof manufactured goods. Evensmall machines such aslathes and printing presseswere almost entirely con-structed out of wood.
Colonial-type wood stoveswere huge, hot, and verysmoky. Because of this they
were very unpractical yetwere the only option the earlysettlers had. These stoveswere used until circa 1790s,when other successful inven-tions became realistic alter-natives.
Dying fires were kept alive
through the night as burningcoals and embers until veryearly the next morning, whenthey had to be stoked and fedagain. And when a stove wentout and needed to be relit, itwas this fire kindler that peo-ple used.

by David UffingtonCredit and debt
myths and truthsThere are a half-
dozen myths aboutcredit and debt thatcan get consumersinto trouble:
Myth 1: It’s easy tofix bad credit. Truth:Negative informationcan stay on yourcredit report for aslong as specified bythe Fair CreditReporting Act law. Asimple delinquencyon a credit card canstay on your creditreport for a whop-ping seven years, and that starts 180days after theaccount firstbecomes delinquent.A bankruptcy willstay on your creditreport for 10 years.
Myth 2: Bankrupt-cy gets rid of all yourdebts. Truth: Stu-
dent loans, childsupport, alimonyand any taxes youowe that are lessthan three years oldare not dischargedby bankruptcy. Addi-tion-ally, not every-one is automaticallyapprov-ed for bank-ruptcy. Since 2005you’ll have to pass a“means test” to see ifyou qualify for bank-ruptcy or will receivea repayment planinstead.
Myth 3: A debt col-lector can’t contactother people, suchas your neighbors orfamily. Truth:They’re allowed tocall others to try todetermine where youlive and work andwhat your phonenumber is. Addition-ally, they can callyou at work unlessyou notify them that
you don’t want callsthere.
Myth 4: A divorcedecree will relieveyou from your debts.Truth: Since thecreditor didn’t haveinput about how thedivorce settlementwas written, theydepend on the origi-nal contract to deter-mine who pays whatand when. No matterwhat the divorcedecree says, if youdon’t adhere to theterms of the originalcontract, the creditorcan report you delin-quent if you don’tpay.
Myth 5: Creditorscan’t change yourinterest rate. Truth:With just 45 daysnotice, a creditor canmake significantchanges to youraccount agreement, including raising
your interest rate. This can happen ifyour credit scoredrops, even if you’vecontinued to makepayments correctlyto that creditor.
Myth 6: Once yourcar is repossessed, you don’t have toworry about it any-more. Truth: Thatdepends whetherthere is a balancedue after the car issold at auction. If thecar doesn’t sell forenough to clear thewhole amount due,you are obligated forthe balance.

Q: I found a ceram-ic cat’s head in ajunk shop in Dallas, and I am not quitesure what it wasused as. It obviouslymounted on the wall, and the cat’s mouthhas a small hole. —Betty, SpringBranch, Texas
A: You have astring holder, anitem often found inkitchens throughoutthe 1930s and ‘40s.The one in my grand-mother’s kitchen fea-tured a monkeydesign. Values varydepending on styleand condition, butoften sell in the $20to $45 range.
Q: I recently inher-ited a collection ofbooks from a distantrelative who was aprofessor of litera-ture at a major uni-versity. Althoughseveral of the booksare extremely inter-esting, I am curiousabout one in particu-lar: “Prufock andOther Observations”by T.S. Eliot. It waspublished in Londonin 1917 and appearsto be a first edition.— Susan, Helena,MT
A: This was T.S.Eliot’s first book.According to “Col-lected Books: TheGuide to Values” byAllen and PatriciaAhearn (PutnamPress), your book, ifit is, indeed, a firstedition and in decentshape, is worth in
the $8,500 to$10,000 range.

Yard Clean Up after storms & Roof Repair.
(NAPSA) — If yourhome is like many, there’s one room thatjust doesn’t work withthe rest of the house.
To help you fix that,HGTV designer LisaLaPorta and Pfisteroffer four simple solu-tions that you can exe-cute in a weekend orless.
How to have a newhome at the old
address1. Remove the clutter
and organize yourchaos. Too many piecesof furniture, acces-sories and small appli-ances create conflictingstyles. That doesn’tmean you have to throwstuff out, however. Youcan still keep every-thing you own. Justdon’t have everythingyou own out at once.
Rotate your art andfurniture with the sea-
sons. Maximize yourcabinet space withorganizers and stack-ers. Put away appli-ances and utensils inyour kitchen. Decoratewith bowls of fruit andflowers.
2. Work with whatyou have. When pickingcolors and accessories, consider what you cur-rently own and high-light the pieces youlove. You can transformjust about any roomsimply by rearrangingthe furniture andapplying a fresh coat ofpaint.
3. Create your owndesign journal. Lookthrough design booksand magazines and tearout pictures of roomsyou love and rooms youdislike. You shouldstart to notice reoccur-ring preferences thatcan inspire you.
4. It’s time for newjewelry. Just likeadding a new piece ofjewelry to yourwardrobe, accessorizingthe bathroom orkitchen with a newfaucet and hardwarecan make the room feelnew. The old rulesabout having to match
all your metals —faucets, drawer pulls, hinges, light fixtures —are gone, so get whatfits your design person-ality.

by Matilda CharlesDelay claimingSocial Security
If you take yourSocial Security bene-fits early, you’ll bereducing by a signifi-cant margin the totalamount you couldreceive.
• The BMO Retire-ment Institute hasproduced a report,“Retirees Not Maximiz-ing Social SecurityRetirement Benefits,”that outlines some ofthe facts:
• For 60 percent ofseniors, Social Securi-ty will provide the
majority of incomethey’ll have duringretirement.
• If you take yourbenefits early, you’llreceive a reducedamount each month. For example, if youclaim at age 62, youmight receive $1,500.Wait until age 66 andthat amount becomes$2,000. At age 70, itwould calculate as$2,640.
• If you claim early, that lesser amountstays with you for therest of your life. (Thereis a 12-month periodwhen you can pay
Senior News Lineback all the moneyyou’ve received andstart collecting againlater, at a higher rate. But if you don’t actwithin that window oftime, you can’t changeyour mind.)
• If you’re marriedand die first, yourspouse will receive alesser amount eachmonth if you’veclaimed early. Whileyou’re living, yourspouse will receive upto 50 percent of thebenefit, which will besmaller because you’veclaimed early.
• When it comes toasking for advicebefore collecting SocialSecurity, 62 percent ofseniors haven’t done
that.• While it’s possible
to receive Social Secu-rity at age 62, the qual-ifying age for Medicareis still age 65. Youcould be stuck tryingto pay for expensivehealth insurance witha reduced Social Secu-rity check.
Before you apply forSocial Security, getadvice. Call and askthat the numbers berun for you showinghow much you’llreceive at age 62 asopposed to later. You’llbe surprised at the dif-ference.

by David UffingtonWhy your mortgage
might be deniedIf your plan for the
New Year involvesgetting ready to buya home, you’ll needto make sure all yourplans don’t fall apartat the last minutewith a mortgageapplication that getsturned down. GoBanking Rates hascompiled a list of 10reasons that mort-gages get rejected.
1. Too many jobs: Ifyou’ve recentlychanged jobs orfields, have beenunemployed orhaven’t worked con-sistently in the pasttwo years, youremployment historycould be a problem. Some lenders insistthat you’ve kept thesame job, unless youwere promoted.
2. Child supportand alimony: If you
don’t disclose thatyou make these kindof payments, thelender can find outjust by calling thecourthouse. Thesepayments are con-sidered debts andmust be reported onyour application.
3. New applicationsfor credit: If youapply for new creditbetween the time youfill out a mortgageapplication and areapproved for themortgage, you’ll like-ly have problems.
4. Closing old cred-it accounts: Yourcredit utilizationratios and availabili-ty changes theminute you close anaccount. That skewsthe numbers lenderslook at in decidingwhether to give you aloan. Don’t touch oldaccounts.
5. Borrowingmoney for the down
Dollarsandsense
payment: If moneyhas been given toyou, don’t try toclaim that you savedit. The lender willfind out, and theloan will likely bedenied.
6. Late dues bycondo tenants: Ifyou’re trying to buy acondo, the FederalHousing Administra-tion insists that notmore than 15 per-cent of the tenantsbe more than 60days late in payingdues.

(BPT) — What wouldholiday shopping be with-out credit cards? Usingcredit cards wisely canhelp you score some gooddeals, and offers a layer ofconsumer protection thatcash and debit cardscan’t. Still, if you get car-ried away with holidayspending, the season’s“Ho, ho, ho!” can turn into“Oh, oh, oh!” come Janu-ary when the bills arrive.
When holiday shop-ping, it’s important to findthe right balance of whento use plastic and whennot, and to understandyour credit status beforeyou give your cards aworkout. Fortunately, some planning and pre-cautions can help ensureyou use credit wisely this
holiday season.Before you start using
credit cards for holidayshopping, take a look atyour credit score and re-port. Knowing your cur-rent credit status willhelp you better under-stand how much (or little)credit you can afford touse this season. Whenyou enroll in a productsuch asfreecreditscore.com, youare provided access totools that can help youunderstand how yourspending behaviors im-pact your credit scoreand report, while track-ing both over time.
Once you understandyour current credit sta-tus, next decided whichpurchases you’ll make
with credit cards. Creditmakes sense for sometypes of purchases morethan others.
For example, when on-line shopping, a creditcard offers convenience, security and consumerprotections that aren’tpresent with debit cards.Using a credit card for abig-ticket item, such asconsumer electronics, can also help you breakthe cost down into moremanageable, incremental
payments (although you’llpay interest, too). Forsmaller in-store purchas-es, like wrapping paper or
stocking stuffers, cashmay be a better option.
One tip that financialplanners recommend is tochoose just one card foryour holiday credit pur-chases and remove all oth-ers from your wallet. Use itfor both in-person and on-line buying. Opt for thecard with the lowest inter-est rate on purchases or
the one that gives you thebest reward points for us-ing the card. Using justone card allows you to bet-ter track your spendingand limits the risk of iden-tity theft or fraud if yourwallet is lost or stolenwhile you’re shopping.
Avoid the temptation ofusing store cards or open-ing new accounts in ex-change for a temporarydiscount. During the holi-days, this type of incentiveabounds, but store cardsoften charge higher inter-est rates that offset thediscount you received inexchange for opening theaccount. And, each newaccount you open willcause a credit inquiry toshow up on your credit re-port. Too many inquiries
in too short a time canlower your credit score.
Finally, pay off holidaypurchases right away, rather than carrying abalance. If you won’t beable to pay off a balancewithin a month (or two atthe most), it may be timeto reassess your holidayspending and adjust yourbudget accordingly.
Holiday shopping canbe fun and rewarding aslong as you control yourspending and use of cred-it cards. There’s no needto go into debt or damageyour credit. A little plan-ning, and understandinghow each financial deci-sion impacts your credit, can help keep the holidayseason — and your finan-cial future — bright.

Smart credit card use for holiday shoppers
(StatePoint) — Looking for a thoughtful gift this hol-iday season? Give a gift basket!
Don’t be intimidated by the task — it’s easy to cre-ate the perfect gift basket for even the fussiest person.
“A food basket is a welcome gift for all occasions,”says Bonnie Tempesta, founder of the cookie companyBoncora Biscotti. “You can make it as elegant, whim-sical or celebratory as you want — and at whatevercost your budget allows.”
Gift baskets also offer a chance to inject some per-sonality into a gift.
“What you choose to put in a gift basket is a reflec-tion of who you are as a gift giver,” says Jean Thomp-son, Owner and CEO of Seattle Chocolates, maker ofpremium chocolate bars and truffles. “It’s a great wayto share your good taste.”
Follow these simple tips to make unique gift basketsfor everyone on your list:
• Decide what you want to include before you buythe basket so you can pick the right size. No matterwhat size basket you use, it should be overflowing.
• If a traditional wooden basket isn’t your style, lookfor other vessels: a colorful paper bag, a pretty pastrybox, a flower pot. The possibilities are endless — andinexpensive.
• Fill the basket with higher- and lower-priced itemsto keep overall costs down. Include items of varyingheights to add visual interest.
• Arrange the contents around a theme, such as allthings red or everything handmade or all chocolate!
• Choose foods you love or products you’re excitedabout trying. Chances are, if you were wowed by atreat, your gift recipient will be too.
• “Go for edibles that don’t need to be eaten rightaway,” says Edmond Sanctis, co-founder of SahaleSnacks. “Treats that can be nibbled and shared allseason long are ideal gift basket additions.”
• Splurge on indulgences your recipient normallywouldn’t buy for him or herself.
• Add a food item that’s new or hard to find.• Include unusual flavor combinations that can be
used for snacking as well as cooking.• Use colorful, recyclable paper, like tissue paper or
shredded paper, to fluff up the contents of your bas-ket.
• The finishing touch on a gift basket is not theshrink wrap; it`s the note. Tell your gift recipient whyyou chose what you did!
With these tips, you’re sure to create a gift yourfriends and family will appreciate.

(StatePoint) — Saving money while holiday shopping may sound impossible, butyou don’t need to be a Scrooge to budget. Through smart strategizing, you can findthe perfect gift for friends and family and keep your wallet intact.
Here are some tips to give you a leg up on your New Year’s financial resolutions:Just say no
When it comes to purchasing warranties, there are times you can just say no.Refusing extended warranties doesn’t strip you of all protection. Reputable manu-facturers will back products for three to six months and some credit cards extendor even double manufacturers’ warranties. If you do purchase a warranty, be surethe terms are worth the cost.
Avoid layawayLayaway may sound great, but without discipline, it can be costly. If you’re us-
ing a credit card to make small payments on your layaway purchase, and you don’tpay your balance in full, you may ultimately pay both a layaway fee and intereston your credit card. And if you cancel the purchase, you could pay an additionalfee too. Stick to buying what you can afford today.
Manage your moneyIf you have trouble sticking to your shopping budget, consider using tools to help
keep you honest. Traditional financial software programs, which help you setbudgets and manage money, are now providing access from mobile devices.
“Consumers who go into debt from holiday shopping often do so because they are
unaware of what they have in their bank accounts and are spending unmindfully,”warns Aaron Patzer, VP of Innovation at Intuit. “Tracking your budgets and spend-ing as you go will help you stay on track.”
Know the refund policyNot all stores offer refunds for returned items. When buying gifts, make sure you
know a store’s policy before your purchase. Ask for a gift receipt so your friendsand family can make exchanges or get refunds if necessary.
Use gift cardsRetailers must now honor gift cards for five years from the date of issue. So find
those old gift cards, and use them toward your gift purchases, even if they have“expired.” The company can send you a new card or issue the remaining balancein cash.
DIYShowing your friends and family you care about them should not put you in debt.
If the holidays will cause an unreasonable financial burden, consider making pres-ents. From baking to knitting, to writing your loved ones poems and thoughtful let-ters, homemade presents can be more meaningful than the store-bought variety.
More money management tips for the holidays can be found atwww.Quicken.com.
By planning ahead and making informed financial decisions this holiday shop-ping season, you can start 2013 on the right financial foot.
How to save money this holiday shopping season
(StatePoint) — Though one of the best parts of winter is getting out of the cool, crisp airand into the cozy, comfort of your home, trendsetting crafters are bringing the beauty of na-ture inside their houses when decorating for the holidays this year.
“This holiday season, the outdoors are in,” says Nicole Long, Manager of Inspiration forJo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores. “Pine cones, evergreen, moss and grapevine can give yourtraditional décor a rustic, natural look.”
If you’re having trouble getting inspired, here are some ideas from the experts at Jo-Ann:• Dress up the entrance of your home with an especially festive look. Wire a small twig
wreath to a larger grapevine wreath and then decorate with dazzling embellishments, stemsand greenery.
• Give your mantel a cozy makeover by hanging knitted stockings, embellished withberries and leaves. Then fill them with gifts galore!
• Deck the halls with pictures of loved ones and celebrations past. Turn a traditional pinegarland of berries and pine cones into a personal keepsake of fond memories by addinghandcrafted wire frames of your favorite family photos.
• Paint pine cones red, gold, burgundy and green. Don’t be afraid to add a little glitz witha coat of clear glitter on each one. Showcase them in a simple glass container for a beauti-ful centerpiece or side table decoration.
• Fashion a hanging basket out of grapevine wreath. Place battery-operated lights withinthe basket and fill with ornaments.
• For a delicious holiday goodie bag, dip peppermint sticks in melted chocolate and dec-orate with sprinkles or chopped nuts. Place them in treat bags with ribbon then give to fam-ily and friends throughout the season.
• Print Victorian-era designs onto paper, then decoupage onto wood shapes. Glitter theedges and tie on a shiny ribbon to create a lovely, vintage-inspired ornament.
For more tips and directions on transforming your home for the holiday season, visitwww.JoAnn.com/projects.
By bringing a bit of nature into your home this season, you can evoke its spirit allthroughout the house.

by David UffingtonFind bargains after
ChristmasThe week between
Christmas and New Year’sEve is a good time to get arunning start on shop-ping for next year’s holi-day season. Retailers areeager to add a few dollarsto their coffers before theend of the year, and youmight be able to get alarge portion of nextyear’s shopping done at adeep discount. At thesame time, you can shopfor some of the events youhave coming up in 2013.
Children grow quickly, but it’s safe to buy foradults who generallyhave stable weight.Jeans, sweaters, T-shirtsand sweatshirts are goodoptions for next year, as
are gloves, hats andscarves. At the sametime, if you have a fast-growing child who’ll likelyoutgrow what he or she iswearing before warmweather arrives, look fordiscounted winter gear.
Keep an eye onOffers.com for couponsand markdowns at storessuch as Best Buy, OldNavy, Bloomingdales andToys"R"Us. Note whichones are for online pur-chases only, and whichones are in-store. Com-pare the online sales toyour local ads, as therewon’t be any pattern towhere the bargains are.
Stock up on suppliessuch as Christmas cards, wrapping paper, bowsand tape. Look for out-door lights, ornaments
and decorations. Storeswould rather sell them ata discount than have tostore them until nextyear. (If you’re shoppingfor non-holiday eventsthat are coming up, gowith solid-colored sup-plies such as red or goldfor parties, picnics andbirthdays supplies.)
Check drugstores forholiday-specific merchan-dise. With the holidayover, they need to move itall out via deep discounts.
If you have childrenwith birthdays coming upsoon, keep an eye on toystores that brought in thehot items of the season. Those same toys maynow be on clearance.
Fleece blankets andpersonal-size comfortersnever go out of style and
are always a welcome ad-dition for anyone’s TVviewing room.
Think lonely: For big-ticket items like new car-peting or furniture, itdoesn’t hurt to see whatkind of deals you can getfrom your smaller localretailers. With so manypeople focusing on the
holidays and shoppingthe malls, local retailerswill be eager for sales toround out their year.
Look for unboxed elec-tronics or demo models, but opt for the warrantyjust to be safe.

by Sam MazzottaFind the right gifts for dogs or cats
Dear Paw’s Corner: My daughter and her family have two big dogs and a cat. Ilike giving gifts to the pets as well as my grandkids. Do you have any suggestions?— Tammy, via e-mail
Dear Tammy: Anything that looks cozy, fun and safe for pets is a good bet. I’vealways appreciated even small gifts like a cute bandanna for my dog or small cat-nip toys for my cat. If you’re looking for gifts beyond stocking stuffers, here aresome that most pet owners will appreciate:
• Dog and cat beds: These range in price from about $15 on up to a few hundreddollars. Look for a sturdy fabric covering that is easy to brush fur from, and stuff-ing that can’t be easily pulled out and chewed on.
• Cat furniture: From a simple padded windowsill seat to “kitty condo” play com-plexes that cats can wander through, cat owners appreciate these combinationscratching posts and rest areas.
• Travel safety: A number of products have come on the market to keep dogs andcats safe in the car, from traditional travel crates to adapted seat belts that keepFido securely in his seat.
• Toys: For your daughter’s big dogs, sturdy chew toys are probably welcome. Istill really like Kong chew toys, which are nearly impossible to damage and can befilled with peanut butter or another treat. For cats, something beyond the catnipmouse could include one of Bergan’s “Turbo Tracks,” in which a ball inset in around or figure-eight track scoots around with every swipe of the paw.
No matter which gift you choose, or if you decide to just give small, inexpensivegifts to your daughter’s pets, I’m sure they’ll be appreciated.
