THE UNIVERSITY HONORS PROGRAM
Explore your potential.
Experience the opportunities.
Excel with the University Honors Program.
[ UNC Charlotte ]2015-2016
Students in the University Honors Program (UHP)
share an interest in challenging themselves in the
pursuit of an enriched, well-rounded education.
UHP is much more than an academic endeavor; it
is an interactive, dynamic, and engaging experience
designed to support students in the classroom, on
campus, in the community, and beyond.
We offer resources and guidance to shape students as
they move toward reaching their full potential.
Our students enjoy the individualized attention they
receive as members of a small, scholarly community
within the setting of a large, urban research university.
[ UHP ]
In UHP, you will find peers with similar motivations and goals who represent diverse perspectives,
backgrounds, and interests.
“UHP set the bar high for my other classes. I love the smaller group setting
that allows for constructive group discussions and debates. Additionally,
it’s nice to walk into an honors class and realize that you already know
someone (if not the entire class)!”[ ]
As a student in UHP, your undergraduate
experience will be far from mainstream.
The University Honors Program provides
its members with a comprehensive
multi-year experience that combines an
interdisciplinary academic curriculum
with community engagement and
personal development. You will be part of
a supportive community of exceptional
faculty and energetic students who strive
to broaden their perspectives and develop
as scholar-citizens.
The coupling of your potential and the
opportunities provided by UHP will help
you become a sought-after leader in a
competitive pool of candidates entering
into a career or graduate school.
THE EXPERIENCE[
[
Serving the community at the Habitat for Humanity Homecoming Build
Students are actively involved in classroom activities and discussions in honors classes.
UHP is the oldest and largest honors program at UNC Charlotte with members from every major on campus.
The UHP curriculum serves as a complement
to your major and provides flexibility so
that you have time to engage in research,
internships, and study abroad experiences
tailored to your interests. You also have the
option of joining other honors programs, if
you desire.
Honors classes provide a space for students
to think critically, reflect, ask questions, and
debate solutions.
With an average honors class size of 16
students, discussion and active engagement
between professors and students occurs
naturally.
ACADEMIC LIFE[
[ A signature feature of the UHP curriculum includes honors courses that center around
subjects that are anything but ordinary. Offerings from recent semesters include:
• A Brief History of Imagination
• Mixed-Race Theory
• Cult of Personality: Living in an Age of Media and Celebrity
• Ordering the World
• The Constitutional Right of Privacy
• Intelligence Analysis
• Reading in Slow Motion
• Italian Mafia Through Italian Film
• The Looming Pandemic: Antibiotic Resistance
Honors courses expand learning beyond the classroom and into the community.
We believe in a holistic approach to academic and personal development;
therefore, the UHP experience transcends academia. These are a few examples
of what we offer outside of the classroom:
