Principal’s Message—Mme Marla Tonita Teaching is a highly
complex endeavour;
teachers work with many
students at the same
time, and of course none
of these students is ex-
actly alike. Our class-
rooms are filled with stu-
dents with diverse learn-
ing skills and needs,
social skills, values, fam-
ilies, religions and eth-
nicities, and so much
more. Some students
are introverted while
others are quite extro-
verted, some students
need to explore with
others to learn, while
others learn best by lis-
tening or reading inde-
pendently, some stu-
dents need more struc-
ture and others need
more flexibility. Yet for
all of this, teachers must
know the Alberta pro-
grams of studies that
they teach in such a way
that they can assist eve-
ry student achieve suc-
cess. Wow. Yes, this is
why our teachers are all
professionals who work
hard at this complicated
career.
As professionals, we are
dedicated to keeping up
with current research
into teaching and learn-
ing so that we can con-
tinuously hone our skills
to help your children
learn. One of the ways
that we do this is
through our Staff Plan-
ning and Development
Days that occur through-
out the school year. As
well, this year, Black
Gold Regional Division
also initiated sessions
on Curriculum Mapping
for many of our teach-
ers. In our school, all of
our teachers who teach
any of the core subjects
have been to at least
one session in which
they have taken apart
the programs of study
for a particular subject
and studied the out-
comes that are outlined.
Through this collabora-
tive process, our teach-
ers are developing a
deeper understanding of
what learnings are inte-
gral for our students,
and also some strate-
gies and even assign-
ments and assessments
that will better help our
students learn. This is
mentally exhausting
work, yet I see much
excitement amongst
teachers as they contin-
ue growing as educa-
tors!
This can only help our
students in the future,
and this is, indeed, our
most important work.
Finally, I would like to
thank each of you, par-
ents, for your continued
efforts as your child’s
greatest cheerleaders
and advocates!

Drama
Students in Drama 8 are working on a short play called "Everyone Gets Eaten By Sharks."
The play is an informative comedy on how not to get eaten by sharks. We will be performing
during Flex on Wed March 8.
For the school Drama Play:
We have recently begun rehearsals for our school play, "Mr. Winkler's Birthday Party." We are
happy to announce that the following students will be acting in this production: Mac Stymiest,
Tyler Sturley, Jordan Courage, Caelam Stack, and Alex Sasyniuk. We are also very excited to
have so many students involved in planning, organizing, and creating our props, set, and cos-
FLEX in February…
Once again in the month of February our students have had access to many
great opportunities during FLEX. Each week that FLEX is offered, our students
have access to support in ALL core subjects, including French Immersion sub-
jects. This allows our students to have a quiet, focused work environment su-
pervised by a teacher that is able to assist them if needed. We strongly encour-
age our students to keep this in mind when making their choices each Friday.

Active Citizenship
We are collecting drink tabs off of the tops of cans to donate to the Ronald McDonald House. It would be great if you could help out and collect them at home too. Please bring drink can tabs to room 118, Mrs. Duru's room.
Pink Shirt Day
On February 22, the staff and students at ÉJELS
recognized Pink Shirt Day; a nation-wide cam-
paign committed to bringing awareness to the ef-
fects of bullying. Through activities that our stu-
dents participated in during health class and a
presentation at our February assembly, students
were asked to reflect upon their actions and how
they impact those around them. Thanks to every-
one that wore pink and supported such an im-
portant issue!
Wristband Challenge
At our assembly each month, family day passes are drawn for the Beaumont Aqua-
Fit Center. Students can be eligible for the draw by dropping off their wristband that
they were given when they entered the Aqua-Fit Center or the Leduc Recreational
Center. There is a Wristband Challenge drop box in the office. At our February as-
sembly, Zack Freeman, (8B), Jordan Jefferson (8E), Kiara Crossley (7D), Collin Kozijn (9D) and An-
drey Larkin (9B) had their names drawn. Each received a family day pass to the Aqua-Fit Center.
Congratulations!

The Senior Girls team has demonstrated tremendous growth as a team throughout the course of the season. They
are quintessential student athletes; focused, driven, respectful, and consistently seeking ways in which they can
improve. They have an overall record of 8 wins and 7 losses (6-3 in tournaments, and 2-4 in league play). The girls
finished fifth overall and play cross town rivals Beaumont Composite in the first round of playoffs. Keep up the great
