6. Samuel Slater (factory diagram 336)
In 1789 Samuel Slater was a 21 year-old
apprentice in Arkwright’s textile mill in England.
Samuel Slater memorized the design of the machinery in the mill.
Slater disguised himself and traveled to New York.
While traveling on the Atlantic Slater drew the mill from memory.
Once in America, Slater recreated Arkwright’s mill for wealthy Quaker Cotton Mill owner, Moses Brown.

James Hargreaves invented the Spinning Jenny.
Richard Arkwright invented the water frame and added it to the spinning jenny
Edmund Cartwright invented the steam powered loom for weaving cotton.
Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin.
James Watt of Scotland improved the design of the steam engine and made it practical for use
Oliver Evans built the first high-pressure steam engine for powering machinery. Now factories no longer need water power.
