The Gift of Love
Welcome to a new year and we wish you one that is full of positives! This month we will celebrate Saint Valen-tine‘s day on February 14
th and
some will exchange tokens of their love and appreciation for those who are special to them. There are ap-parently several Saint Valentines but the one that is most probably com-memorated on this day was a Christian Priest, living in Rome during the reign of Claudius II, who assisted young Christian couples to get married when Christians were being persecuted and helping them was against the law. Valentine was eventually executed and martyred for his help and concern.
Love can take different forms and the Greeks used words to differentiate between pas-sionate love (eros), parental love (storgeo) and friendship (phileo). One of the popular bible passages heard at weddings reads ‗Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envi-ous or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not

ploring and sharing with us how God is part of all we

rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, be-lieves all things, hopes all things, endures all things‘.
This love is called agape and de-scribes a sacrificial, unconditional, deep and caring love, a love that God gives to us as a gift. Another passage tells us that ―God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but
may have eternal life‖ and yet an-other ―You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart‖ and ―You shall love your neighbour as yourself‖.
It‘s always good to be told that you are loved and Valentine‘s day gives us that op-portunity to ex-press our love to those who are special to us.
It is also perhaps an opportunity to
remind ourselves of that agape love from God and that love we can return to him through prayer and that love we can show each other through the way we treat each other.

Happy New Year from staff and children at Arnesby School. 2012 will be an exciting year for us. The plans for our new classroom are near completion with parents and governors evaluating the build as you read this. There will be a new secure lobby to the school office and an outside classroom too. A group of children has been chosen to help with the outside classroom design, which will have an emphasis on outdoor education for Early Years. Our school noticeboard is now easily visible next to Arnesby village hall and the plans are displayed here for the com-munity to view as well. In the next issue we may have news of how the timetable of build work will proceed.
Don‘t forget about joining the children in the village hall for school lunches. Ring the office for details of the menu.
Best wishes to all,

Do you know? Hedgehogs: Facts Although Hedgehogs are common and wide- spread, evidence of a drastic decline is mounting. Surveys show that populations have dropped by almost 50% over the last 25 years and this is still continuing in England and Wales. If nothing is done to reverse the trend then this mammal could be ex-tinct from some areas by 2050. This has led to the hedge-hog becoming a UK Priority Species and conservation measures are being put in place. Hedgehogs range over several gardens each night to find food. Make sure your garden is accessible by leaving a small gap in your fence or under a gate. www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk

Please take some time to look at this site. Any comments would be appreci-ated by myself or Rev‘d Andy. In time we hope to develop this site to include more information about the village. Towards the end of last term we received some good news: we feature in the top ten schools for the county. This was reported in the Leicester Mercury‘s Dec 15th edition. Well done to all the pupils and staff for all their hard work in order to achieve this. Let‘s hope this year is just as successful for us. Headteacher: Matthew Bown

feel uncomfortable by those who are puzzled as to why I feel the need to be so generous towards people I do not really know.
I experienced this feeling recently when a friend and two of her relatives joined us briefly on Boxing day. As they were unable to stay and eat with us I had prepared two small gifts for them to open and share together at home. This shocked my friend a little and she asked me why I was doing this. ―You don‘t know them‖, she said, ―so keep the gifts and reuse them another time‖.
I was tempted to follow her suggestion, when suddenly I felt a sharp reassuring tap on my knee from a family member. Immediately my mind flew to Jesus‘ words in Matthew 25 where he speaks about how to treat others: ―For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in….‖
These two people were not marginalised for any of the reasons mentioned by Jesus in Matthew‘s gospel, but instead they did not have the benefit of being able to celebrate Christmas within a family atmosphere. I learned from my friend later how much gladness and joy the small gifts had brought to them: I am very glad I gave them.
The birth of Jesus Christ changed the world forever, and during this season of Epiphany the Christian church celebrates His showing to the world. To me this tap on the knee was a sudden reminder of how a small gift given in love can become part of something so much greater. Now A Prayer:
Lord, you have given me so much in Jesus. Help me to give to others as freely and generously as I have re-ceived from you. AMEN. Carol Higson

TIME CHANGE –please note that starting this month the time of the Bene-fice service (on the third Sunday of every month) has changed to 10:30am
Heavenly Father, you love us, even when we
feel unlovely; you care
about us, through good times and bad;
you understand us, even when we feel lost
and confused. Help us
to recognise your love in our lives and seek to
know you more closely, through
Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
