Download - The Academy News -- Final Spring Issue
When I first came to
the Journalism class, I was
shocked when I found only
seven people were enrolled
in this class. That meant we
seven people would have to
organize the Academy
News—brainstorming, in-
terviewing, writing stories,
editing, typesetting. It was a
huge challenge for us, but
we finally made it.
Not only did we make
the Academy News, we also
created something new and
fun. We had our “activity
reporter” Phoebe, who al-
ways wrote the weekly ac-
tivities, taking pictures and
recording the students’ best
moments. We had our
“sports reporter” Howard,
who always came in the
latest sports news, writing
and analyzing sports stars’
career and life. We had our
“quiz expert” Yara, who
always made quizzes, ask-
ing students to research and
learn more knowledge. We
also had “best writers”
Lilly, Yvoon, and Sara, who
always wrote about what

The TAN staff’s experience

not always difficult; it can bring
hope and create miracles. The
most essential thing to success is
your determination and effort.
"Fight On" is the fight slogan
of USC. It is not only what USC
students always say. More impor-
tantly, it is a kind of spirit that
USC Trojans have to encourage
themselves. Once you have made
up your mind to do something,
keep working and fighting. You
will succeed.
Fight on!

P A G E 5 MAKING FRIENDS AT LANGUAGE ACADEMY BY VIDAYLA (LILLY) SABAJAN
When I first started to study at
Language Academy, I didn’t
know what a wonderful time was
waiting for me. I think everyone
was excited and nervous about
this new episode in our lives. No-
body knew which group we were
going to attend, and I had a lot of
questions in my mind.
This was the first time that I
took classes in a university. When
I first came on the USC campus, I
was very impressed with the
structures and the areas for study
The libraries were very big and
sophisticated, and you can search
for anything you need. I love the
gardens and the fountains, where I
can listen to the water run. This
makes me feel in contact with na-
ture.
I had a big surprise when I no-
ticed that in my group I was the
only Latina and the rest of my
classmates were from Saudi Ara-
bia, China and Korea. I thoughts,
it was going to be a challenge for
me. I repeated to myself, very
scared, I really have to speak Eng-
lish. Another curiosity that I had
was how my teachers would be.
One week before, I had just met
Priscilla. Taylor, who asked me if
I was going to be a new student,
and I said yes. She gave me a
nice welcome smile.
Days were passing and little
by little, the ice was broken be-
tween the classmates. Everybody
started to make groups and talk to
each other. In Oral Skills I just
remember this particular group of
funny and friendly guys Aws, Mo-
hamed James, Andy, Eric, Abdul-
raham and Nawaf and Gui. Also I
have to mention the group of girls.
Sunho, Cristy Kelly, Hagueye,
and Hebah.
I had another three classes:
Journalism with Sonja Lovelace
as a teacher, very excellent and
kind
I really enjoyed this wonderful
group. Reading & Writing with
the Teacher Eddie Chong was a
very fascinating and interesting
group. Thanks to this class, I’m
not afraid to read English any-
more.
In Grammar with Heather, I
had a really hard time because I
felt no connection with her, but
while we were talking everything
went better. Now I feel more con-
fident. Also Jeminah, in writing
workshop, helped me to under-
stand the important process and
technical steps to be a good
writer.
In conclusion, I’d like to say to
everyone that all the special mo-
ments here at USC will be in my
heart because every step in my life
means I grow as a person and hu-
man being.
Thanks and good luck for eve-
ryone and remember: Be positive.
Always your friend

Drama Elective Class Performs O. Henry’s “The Cop and The An-them”
The Drama Elective of Lan-
guage Academy performed the O. Henry classic “The Cop and the Anthem” on Monday, April 23, to an audi-ence of staff, faculty, and stu-dents from various other elec-tives.
Rancho performed the main role of a man trying to get arrested, but just when he has a change of heart and wants to go straight, the cop takes him to jail.
Priscilla Taylor, the Drama Elective instructor, prepared the class for six weeks, and the show brought out the tal-ents of all of the students.
Taylor said, “It’s wonderful to see the students go from reading and reciting to actu-ally being the character.”
Next stop: Broadway!

The Best Days
Coming to the USC Language
Academy, I didn’t know what to
expect. Since I have been here, I
have met some great students and
staff members. Being in this acad-
emy is one of the best experiences I
have ever had. One of the best ex-
periences I had is writing for the
Academy Newsletter. Being part of
the newsletter gave me confidence
and really improved my English. I
want to thank all the students and
staff members for this great experi-
ence I had. I hope everyone has a
great summer vacation and I wish
everyone the best. See you in sum-
mer. Fight on.
