~~ September 26, 2021 ~ Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary TimeDear Parishioners:
It is so good to see things coming back to full speed. While there are still some COVID related
restrictions, especially for our Senior Center, CYO basketball, and Religious Education which is starting remote until November, our parish groups are back and functioning. This is a tremendous parish with so many good things going on here every day, and so many wonderful people giving of themselves so generously. We are all part of the Family of God here at St. Martin de Porres, and we are united as a family by our faith in Jesus Christ and our love for Him, His Church, and for one another, which is rooted in and flows from our union with Jesus in the Eucharist.
If our children could only come to know more the inestimable treasure we have in the Eucharist, it would make all the difference in their lives. Therefore, we need to teach our children the importance of Sunday Mass. When he first became our Archbishop, Cardinal Timothy Dolan was asked what his first priority in leading the Archdiocese of New York is. He responded: “To make Sundays important; to make Sunday truly the Lord’s Day; spending quality time with one another - Sunday Mass and a Sunday meal. For us Catholics, Sunday Mass is a Sunday meal.” As Cardinal Dolan further stated in his homily at his Installation Mass: “The Resurrection of Jesus, Easter, is so central to our faith that we celebrate it every Sunday as the Lord’s Day, anchored in our faithfulness to Sunday Mass, our weekly family meal with the Risen Jesus.”
The constant teaching of the Church for 2000 years as stated in the Catechism of the Catholic Church is that: “The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on Sundays and days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, caring for the sick, or some other compelling reason).” Many today seem to have forgotten that skipping Sunday Mass without a valid reason is a serious sin. While the pandemic had provided a sort of “dispensation” from this obligation, the Bishops, including Cardinal Dolan, have made it clear that this is no longer the case except for those whose health is seriously compromised, and so people should be getting back to Mass. Thanks be to God that has been the case here and we see more and more coming back every week.
As today’s second collection for St. Joseph’s Seminary reminds us, we are in great need of more priests. The essence of the priesthood is the Eucharist. Where are vocations to the priesthood going to come from if our children grow up not going to Mass and disconnected from the awesome mystery of the Eucharist? God bless all of our parents who bring their children to Mass each week.
Let us make it our first priority to make Sundays, the Lord’s Day, important; to spend quality time together as a parish family at Sunday Mass, and more time with our families at home. This is what will make our parish family of St. Martin de Porres and our families at home happy, holy, and strong in the midst of our troubled world. May God bless us all.
Sincerely in Christ,Rev. Matthew J. Furey

seminarians, and will help prepare them to become great priests, spiritual guides and leaders. Please pray for vocations, and help provide for those who have been called, in this collection. For more information, please

CCOVID With the resurgence of cases recently, we want
to remind everyone to remain vigilant. While masks are not mandated indoors at this time, given the guidance of public health officials it is a good idea to wear a mask while in the Church, but that is up to you at this time. Please remember that the two side sections in front of the Church are reserved for those who should be wearing a mask indoors and distancing, and for those who just feel more comfortable doing so. Masks are optional in the two main sections of the Church. Our only concern is for the health and safety of all our people, especially our elderly and all those most vulnerable to this virus.
Also, please continue what we have been doing throughout the pandemic in receiving Holy Communion. We continue to encourage that Communion be taken in the hand for now. If in conscience you choose to receive on the tongue, please continue our practice of waiting until the end after all those receiving on the hand have finished. We just want everyone to feel safe while in Church. Thank you for your patience and cooperation throughout this most difficult time.
