An effective small business website should:
• Be Easily found
• Be Visually pleasing
• Be Easy to use
• Incite an action
Be Easily Found
• Things you can do ON-site
• Things you can do OFF-site
Easily Found: On-Site Activities
• Build a keyword ATTACK list• Update Title, Description, and ALT tags
• Keywords (hyphenated) in URLs• Use ATTACK list throughout content
• Remember to make words GEO specific• (Bedford ma landscaping vs. landscaping)
Easily Found: Off-Site Activities
• Search engine local directories• Pay Per Click
• Social Media (Linked-in, Twitter, Facebook)• PR / Media Mentions
• Use in all company marketing materials
Visually Pleasing
• Clean and simple; less is usually more• Do you love your logo??
• Use ONLY High Quality Photos• Turn off any “Auto-Play” media
• Stick to a grid• Great knock-off vs. bad original
Easy to use
• Standard navigation• Logical groupings of content
• Consider top 3 most important items• Prominent contact info• Consider mobile users• Least amount of clicks
Incite An Action
• You must ASK them to do something• What is the typical sales process?
• Test different Calls to Action• Use multiple Calls to Action, but make it easy to just call
A crap website says "I don't care”"
