ProgramofStudyThefirstofficialstepontheroadtotheMaster'sdegreeistofileaProgramofStudy(POS),whichisalistofcoursesthatconstitutesacontractbetweenthestudentandtheUniversityindicatingwhichclassesthestudentwilltaketocompletetherequirementsforhis/herMaster’sdegree.BeforecompletingthePOS,studentsshouldmeetwiththeirthesisadvisortodiscussoptions.AftercompletingthePOSform(foundontheGeographyDepartmentwebsite),studentshavetheformsignedbytheirthesisadvisor,andthenturnintheformtotheGeographyGraduateAdvisor.Then,theGraduateCoordinatorwillsubmitthePOSon-line.ThemostcommonreasonsforrejectionofthePOSare1)morethanthirtyunitsarelistedand2)failuretoincludeallthe“catalogrequirements.”CatalogrequirementsarecoursesthatarelistedasrequiredintheannualSDSUGraduateBulletin.(Reviewthecatalogspecificallyforyourdegree:MA,MS-GIS,orMS-WS).SubsequentchangestothePOScanbemadeusingthe“PetitionforAdjustmentofAcademicRequirements”formavailableontheGraduateDivisionwebsite(https://grad.sdsu.edu/current_grad_students/forms).Pleasenote:coursesthathavebeenincludedinthePOSandhavealreadybeencompletedcannotberemoved.IfyoubelieveyouwillbetakingcoursesnotonyourPOSduringthesemester,pleasemakesuretosubmitachangeformassoonaspossible.WhenrequestingtochangeyourPOS,pleaseresubmitarevisedPOSformaswell.TheDepartmentalPOSform,signedbyboththethesisadvisorandtheGraduateAdvisor,shouldbesubmittedtotheDepartmentCoordinatorbyApril15thofyourfirstyear.StudentsholdingdepartmentassistantshipswillnothavetheirassistantshipsrenewedunlesstheirPOSformshavebeenturnedin.

ThesisProposalAfterselectingaThesisCommitteeChairandCommittee(formobtainedfromGraduateDivision),athesisproposalisneededthatoutlinestheplannedresearchproject.Thisprocessisgenerallystartedfallofthestudent’sfirstyearandcontinuedinGEOG700(offeredintheSpring).SomestudentsapplyforclearancefromtheUniversity’sInstitutionalReviewBoard(IRB)(orIACUCforanimalresearch)beforetheproposalmeeting,andthensubmitamendments(ifneeded)aftertheproposalmeeting.AnotheroptionistoapplyforIRBapprovalaftertheproposalmeeting.Forthosedoingresearchinvolvinghumansubjects,advancementtocandidacycannotoccuruntilIRBorIACUCpaperworkhasbeensubmitted.ConsultyourThesisAdvisorfordetails.
ThesisProposalandDefenseTheThesisProposalDefenseoccursaftertheproposalhasbeenthoroughlycritiquedandapprovedbytheThesisAdvisor.Itisanofficialdefensethatincludesameetingofallthecommitteemembers.Followingthesuccessfuldefenseofthethesisproposal,allthecommitteemustalsosigntheproposaldefenseform.Perdepartmentrules,thethesisproposalhasa10-pagemaximumlimit.
ThesisDocument,PresentationandDefenseThestudentpreparesafinalthesisdocumentinconsultationwiththeThesisAdvisor.TheDepartmentofGeographyhasitsownguidelinesforformattingofthethesis.PleaseconsultyourThesisAdvisorfordetails.SomeformattingsuggestionsandMSWordTemplatesareavailableat:

http://www.montezumapublishing.com/thesis1/Formatting.aspxUponapprovalbytheThesisAdvisor,thestudentarrangesatimefortheThesisPresentationandDefense.Then,thethesisdocumentisdistributedtoeachmemberoftheThesisCommittee,ideallyatleasttwoweeksinadvanceoftheThesisPresentationandDefense.Whenallmembersagreethatthethesisisreadyforthepresentationanddefense,itisthestudent'sresponsibilitytoconsulttheDepartmentofGeographyGraduateCoordinatortoschedulearoomforthePresentationandDefense,andifneeded,arrangeforalaptopcomputerandprojectorwiththeDepartmentofGeographyoffice.Thethesispresentationanddefenseinvolvestwo-steps.Firstisthepresentationtothedepartment(nottoexceed30minutes)followedbyabriefquestionandanswersection.Afterward,thethesiscommitteemeetswiththestudentforthedefense.Followingthedefense,thecommitteeprovidesarecommendationonboththedefense(pass/fail)andthethesisdocument(norevisionneeded,minorrevisions,majorrevisions,fail).
Final Thesis Document Preparation OncetherevisedthesisdocumenthasbeenapprovedbytheThesisAdvisor,theThesisAdvisorsignstheThesisSignaturePageandtheCompletionofThesisinApprovedFormatandthestudenttakesthatformtotheGraduateAdvisor.TheReportofFinalExaminationorThesisDefenseisthensignedbyGraduateAdvisorandsubmittedtoGraduateDivisiononline.ThestudentthenturnsinapdfofthefinalthesisdocumentandThesisSignaturePageintoMontezumaPublishing.
