● If you participated in Fifth Grade Beginning Band, you should already have your book. ● Please note that sixth grade students may finish book one during the course of the
school year and will need book two to continue. Sixth grade and new members: Essential Elements Book 1 (yellow) Advanced sixth grade and all seventh and eighth grade: Essential Elements Book 2 (red)
Woodwinds Oboe and Bassoon reeds: These will still be available for purchase at school for $10 a piece. Clarinet and Saxophone reeds: These will be the responsibility of the student and will no longer be available for purchase at school. You are required to have at least three working reeds with you at all times. The reed is the most delicate portion of the instrument. It’s very easy to chip a reed by bumping it against a music stand or clothing. Once a reed is damaged or worn out, it needs to be replaced. Even students who are very careful with their reeds will still need several replacements to get them through a year of band. Clarinet and Saxophone reed brands: Beginning clarinet and saxophone players should play on Rico (orange box) or Rico Royal (blue box, higher quality) reeds until learning how to properly care for and maintain them. Once you and your parent/guardian feel that you can responsibly handle your reeds, please switch to Vandoren blue box. See page 3 for purchasing information. Beginning players: Clarinet Rico or Rico Royal 2 ½ Alto Saxophone Rico or Rico Royal 2 ½
Once you’ve learned how to care for reeds, please purchase Vandoren reeds only. Vandoren reeds are better quality and not only will they give you a better characteristic sound but they will also last longer with proper care. Purchase the same size as you played on Rico no lower than a 2 ½. Please ask your Director if you are unsure of which size reeds to purchase.
Flip Folder and Lyre Every year the RLAS middle school students join the RLHS Marching Panthers for their Homecoming Pregame Performance. When students are on the field, they use a portable music stand, or flip folder and lyre, to be able to read music when marching.
By purchasing these items one time, you will be set every year for this performance and you will be prepared for marching band in high school.
● If you are purchasing a lyre for trumpet or cornet, make sure you are getting the correct lyre as they are different for both.
● Oboe, bassoon, and percussion players should not purchase these items ● Tuba players should purchase flute lyres to use while playing sousaphone.
**If you do not want to purchase this item, you may memorize the School Song instead and be ready to play it at Homecoming. This is completely doable with a little extra practice! The School Song was given to all members at the end of the 20152016 school year and will be available for new members at the start of the 20162017 school year.
