Redeemer by the Sea Lutheran Church, Kindergarten & Preschool January 2014 News
“a lighthouse to our community and the world”
WORSHIP—GROW—SERVE! Pastor Augie
“[Jesus] answered, ‘Love the Lord your God
with all your heart and with all your soul and
with all your strength and with all your mind’;
and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” (Luke
10:27)
You’ve heard and seen the phrase “Worship
– Grow – Serve” at Redeemer for quite
some time now. What does it mean, and
why do we repeat it so much? We are going
to spend the last few weeks of January
asking and answering those questions on
Sunday mornings. We hope you’ll join us.
In Luke chapter 10, Jesus beautifully
summarizes commandments of God in the
Old Testament found in Deuteronomy 6 and
Leviticus 19. In modern expression, we refer
to this as the “Great Commandment,” which
in actuality is a summary of all of God’s
commands. The Great Commandment has
two parts to it – Love God and Love
Neighbor. This “vertical” and “horizontal”
love comprises the foundational action and
attitude of the Christian, and thus it is fitting
that a vertical and horizontal line intersect to
make a cross. The Cross is a great visual for
loving God and loving neighbor.
At Redeemer, we express loving God and
loving neighbor as worship – grow – serve.
“Worship” is where we express our love and
devotion to God… both on Sunday morning
....
~ ~ January 12 January 19 January 26
as well as in our private and daily devotions.
Further, worship is an adoration of God that
is expressed through all our thoughts and
actions, using our time, talent and treasure.
Therefore, we see the stewardship of our
offerings also as an act of worship. Truly, for
the believer, all of life is and should be a
worshipful expression of thanks and praise.
“Grow” fits well at the intersection of God
and neighbor. It is our goal to grow both in
our love and knowledge of God, as well as in
our love and relationships of neighbor. So
“Grow” includes our study of the Bible and
our fellowship with other believers. We want
to grow in both aspects of our relationship.
In fact, when we grow in our knowledge of
God and His commands, He then turns our
heart toward our neighbor as the beneficiary
of our love toward and faith in Him. Our
Growth Groups at Redeemer are designed to
the perfect place for you to grow in both love
of God and love of neighbor!
Finally “Serve” is an expression of mature
faith as we turn our focus off of ourselves
and onto God and our neighbor. Jesus
himself said that He did not come to be
served, but to serve (Matt. 20:28). When we
ask the question, “How can I serve the Lord?”
He responds to us, “Truly I tell you, whatever
you did for one of the least of these brothers
and sisters of mine, you did for me.” (Matt
25:40). At Redeemer we serve the Lord by
serving our neighbor – both inside our
congregation and out in the community. We
seek to serve them both in physical and
spiritual needs.
Thank you for being a part of what God is
doing at Redeemer. May this New Year be
an opportunity for us to follow the Lord’s
command to love God and neighbor,
through worship, growth and service!
Worshipping, Growing and Serving in Christ,
Pastor Augie.

Where saving money is fun... and helps others learn about Jesus.
You know it's important to teach children to give thanks for God's many
blessings and use those blessings wisely to serve Him. Learning to understand
the value of sharing, saving and spending money is a good place to start.
When you help your child save for the future through the LCEF Young
Investors (Y.I.) Club, those dollars can also help someone else learn about
Jesus. Through the Y.I. Club activities, newsletters and web pages, your child
can learn valuable stewardship concepts while empowering ministry through
LCEF.
Join the Y.I. Club with a Y.I. StewardAccount®
With an investment of just $25 to open the Y.I. StewardAccount, your young
investor becomes a Y.I. Club member with special fun activities that grow with
three different age levels.
Y.I. StewardAccount Features:
Minimum of $25 to
open account

UPDATE — FAMILY MINISTRY STAFF ADDITION Dan Bitner
A lot has been done since our
December report and we are on track
with our goal of casting a wide net. To
start, we have made the formal request
for a list of candidates to the Pacific
Southwest District; that list will include
candidates specializing in family
ministry who may be drawn from the
DCE program, or they may be current
Ordained Ministers (Pastors.) In
addition a number of individuals have
been identified by Concordia
University in Nebraska, home of the
Family Life Ministry Master’s program.
Based on the feedback we have
received from the District regarding
our request, we will begin receiving
candidate information shortly.
We have also named the Call
Committee Members and if you get a
chance to show them your support
that would be appreciated. The
members are Bobbie Ankenbrandt, Joe
Flatt, Lori Batherson; Rhonda Sutherlin
and Shelly Lynaugh, with Pastor Augie
and Dan Bitner participating as ex
officio members. This process will take
valuable time away from family and
though it is very important to our
Church, we should recognize the
dedication of these members.
The Committee’s first meeting was
held on December 16th
and at that
meeting we went through in some
detail the operation of a Call
Committee and reinforced the fact that
it is a prayerful process from start to
finish. We read some Bible verses that
helped confirm how we are to operate
and how we are to go about selecting
the right person. We all left the
meeting with some homework and the
plan to resume soon after the holidays.
Each step of our process will
include prayer that the Holy
Spirit guides our work and our
decisions. The certainty we have
in the call process comes from
our faith that if we go to Him
with the need, He will guide us
to the person we should select.
I also want to say thank you to the
many members of the congregation
who stepped up to ensure we have the
funding for this position. I think it is a
testament of the commitment we have
to growing our Church and speaks well
of our future. If you haven’t yet made
the decision to participate financially,
please keep this position and the
success in reaching out to our
community in your prayers.

The acoustic review has been carried
out and a resulting proposal to
upgrade our system has been received.
The proposal includes three different
options to address the upgrade and
within each option they are broken
down by the work related to sound
dampening, equipment upgrades and
replacement of the existing speakers
with a different style that provides
more uniform sound distribution.
We will be meeting with the consultant
to review the options and once we are
able to determine the most favorable
approach, we will look at the timing for
the upgrades. Our initial assessment of
the proposal is that the costs are
higher than we expected (seems that’s
always the way) and we may go
forward initially with the items that
provide the greatest improvement for
all types of music as well as voice in
our Sanctuary, and look at a later time
for the remaining upgrades.

ANGEL TREE Barbara Gehring
Dear Redeemer by the Sea Church Family:
Thank you so much for your generosity in providing 127 Christmas Gifts to the precious
children of our Marines and Sailors serving proudly with Combat Logistics Regiment 17
here on Camp Pendleton.
As many of you may be aware, this is now the 5th
year you have provided wonderful
Christmas surprises for the “Little Ones” of those in uniform. Personally and
professionally, I am overjoyed and encouraged by your continued faithfulness in
allowing our Lord to truly bless so many of our families through your hands! Though
you may be few in number, once again you have allowed others to see just how big our
God is through your overwhelming response and generosity to the Angel Tree Ministry!
Words simply cannot express the gratitude that overflows out of the hearts of our most
deserving families who benefit from this ministry as
they stop by my office to pick up your personalized
gifts for their children. Some of those gifts, were
especially for the children of our Marines and Sailors who are presently
deployed and I am certain those gifts helped to ease the pain of having a parent
deployed during the Christmas Holiday. Thank you for extending the love of Christ at
Christmas to those that serve!
Once again, on behalf of the all the Marines,
Sailors and families protecting this Nation’s
freedom with CLR-17, thank you again for
all you do! May God richly bless the
Redeemer by the Sea Family abundantly in
the New Year and for many years to come!
Always Semper Fidelis,
Yours in Christ, Curtis Winfree
