TRANSCRIPT
chapter 4, James adds to the
list even those things that we
desire. He points out to us
that we often ask God for
things that we only want for
selfish reasons. In fact, we do
this because we are too
tightly bound to this world.
Indeed, we are friends with
the world! However, our
friendship with the world
comes at a cost; it pulls us
away from God. James
encourages us to change our
affinity and allegiance, and
instead “Draw near to God”
(James 4:8)
Application: Drawing near
to God comes with a cost –
we have to let go of the
world and the world’s way of
doing things. We no longer
mourn the way the world
does. Instead, we have hope
even in death. Likewise, we
mourn at what the world
rejoices over (James 4:9). The
world finds joy in flagrant
disregard for God and His

FRIENDSHIP WITH GOD Pastor Augie PA’s article follows the “SOAP”
format that is used in the Life
Journals that we use at
Redeemer. If you need a Life
Journal, let us know!
Scripture: You adulterous
people! Do you not know that
friendship with the world is
enmity with God? Therefore
whoever wishes to be a friend of
the world makes himself an
enemy of God. (James 4:4, ESV)
Observation: James is famous
for his comparison and
contrast of faith and works. He
says “faith without works is
dead.” (James 2:26) Ouch! He
also reminds us that we are to
be “do-ers” of the Word
(James 1:22). We are not just
to hear the Word and then
ignore it. No, the Word should
both affect and infect the way
that we do life! Everything
from what we ask God for
(chapter 1), to the way we treat
others (chapter 2), to the way
we speak (chapter 3) is to be
guided by the Word of God. In
CURRENT SERMON SERIES
Word. This, however, causes us
to mourn and weep. James is
truly calling us to pick a side.
Either we go after the things of
this world – which are here
today and gone tomorrow
(James 4:14), or we seek God –
who provides life, salvation and
hope! Drawing near to God
comes with a cost, but it also
comes with a promise. If we
draw near to God, we are
promised that he will draw near
to us! When we loosen our
grip on the world (and
therefore its grip on us!) we are
able to cling more tightly to
God. The less we are friends
with the world, the more we are
friends with God. Which is
better to be?
Prayer: Lord, help me to
withdraw from this world – not
from the people in the world or
the needs of the world, but from
the pull and lure of this
world. May I set my sights on
that which you value and draw
nearer to you in my daily
walk. May I be as good of a
friend to You as You are to
me! Amen.
Why Movies? People watch movies and people go to
church. However we usually fail to connect the two. Our hope is that as we use familiar scenes and relevant
situations we will help you to engage your world creatively and Biblically. Join us as we explore some Biblical themes through the lens of modern film. This Summer our
series will focus us on the Gospel of Luke. It will be fun and engaging. You don’t want to miss it! Please note: We are not promoting the movies discussed. We are only using themes found in the movie as a catalyst for our teaching.

STEWARDSHIP BJ Campbell-Lahr
IT IS TIME TO CELEBRATE!!!!!!!!!
How wonderful it is to live in Southern California, especially in North
County, where we experience an unique culture which impacts each of US
on a daily basis!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Last August, my stewardship article reminded us that at RBTS, there is an
unique culture, too . I think that this idea is important enough to revisit
those previous thoughts for it involves who does what ,how and when –A
REAL INVESTMENT OF TIME AND OF YOURSELF..
It impacts -
How we worship,
How we involve the Holy Spirit in our daily life,
How we reach out to others,
How we use the talents and gifts God has given each of us, and even
How we face ‘change’ and share the ‘challenges’ ahead.
Change can be hard for we like the “status quo” but we can’t stay as we
are if we hope to make progress. We have to make our lives count for
Him.
Through His Word, Romans 12, Colossians 3 and Psalms 133 tell us:…
“Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be
transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test
and approve what God’s will is - -His good, pleasing and perfect will….Set
your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”…As we bind to together
to achieve “perfect unity”. Are you celebrating your life in Christ by letting
the Holy Spirit lift up your life and guide you?A side note: The second
summary giving letter (January-August) will be mailed in September. This is
a good time to review how you are progressing in regards to your 2013
pledge-general fund and/or building fund.
Remember – because of who God is and all He has done, we always have
a reason to CELEBRATE HIM !!!!!!
Coming in the month of September….My Reflections article will be highlighting
several reasons to CELEBRATE!
Blessings to each of you! BIRTHDAY CELEBRANTS Jo Voertman
The bridge players were
privileged to christen the
new recreation room at the
home of Faye Bacon for an
afternoon of bridge and
keeping track of the key to
the ladies’ room. The room is
lovely, spacious and bright
although for this writer the
cards left a little
something to be desired.
After bridge, Faye treated
us to a tour of her new
home.
Evelyn Meyer was top
score and Lois O’Donnell
had a stellar
performance playing one
no-trump bids to take
second place.
Bridge will be at the
home of Bobbie
Ankenbrant on Friday,
August 23.
We play
from twelve
-thirty until
four on the fourth Friday
of every month except
December (third Friday in
November). Usually
there are two tables.
Light refreshments are
served.

Do you have a favorite door? Is it made of wood or maybe
glass? Perhaps it squeaks when it opens or slides smoothly to
the side when you approach. The type of door doesn’t really
matter – if what we really want is on the other side.
This fall we’re exploring seven doors – each leading to
personal, spiritual growth. Each one is a great opportunity for
us to journey beyond the bland and mundane to walk down an
exciting new path. Walk through a new door at Redeemer by
the Sea.
