THE USE OF BILLINGUAL LANGUAGE IN TEACHING IMPROVE THE
ACHIEVEMENT AMONG FORM ONE STUDENTS

INTRODUCTION
The ETeMS (or English for Teaching Mathematics and Science) was introduced
in Malasian !u"lic schools in #$$# with the main o"%ecti&e of enhancing the English
language !roficienc of Malasian learners' This is "ecause much has "een said a"out
the deteriorating le&el of English sills among Malasian learners' It is felt that learners
English were "etter off when English was the medium of instruction in schools in the
*+,$s' -hen the national language. /ahasa Malasia was made the medium of
instruction in *+0$. some 1uarters !ercei&ed this as a re&erting !oint where the use of
English language is concerned' Tun Dr Mahathir. the then 2rime Minister. mooted the
mo&e of using English in the teaching and learning of Mathematics and Science
su"%ects. with the no"le intention of !roducing Malasians who are more linguisticall
com!etent # and conse1uentl. s!earheading de&elo!ment and !rogress in education.

teaching in a wa that leads to this student understanding' I noticed that I needed to do a "etter %o" of
assessing students !rior nowledge "efore introducing a conce!t' 4urthermore. through the use of
/ahasa Melau. I "egan to assess student understanding as we !rogressed through a unit' / first
addressing their attitude. construct their disci!line in attending m class !unctuall and mae sure that
the will gi&e a co3o!eration during m class' I ho!e that the will more acti&e to answer m 1uestion
orall when I teach and s!ea them in /ahasa Melau' I "egan to teach in a different manner. alwaswith the goal of increasing student understanding' It is also im!ortant to ee! in mind that
understanding is too com!le8 to "e assessed ade1uatel " an single stle of test' Therefore. I ne&er
relied com!letel on a single unit assessment'
