SUBMISSIONS FOR COMPETITIONS
# ADELAIDE ROCKSPlace: Royal Adelaide Hospital site, Adelaide, South AustraliaAuthor: Nice architects (SK) + Mulloway studio (AU) in second stageProject type: Submission for RAH site competitionAward: Second place and The People’s Choice AwardYear: 2013The core of the proposal is a massive urban gesture – a hill formed from the debris of demolished buildings that turns waste into a positive, exciting, and unique urban space. The hill provides a strong identity for the place, for the city and the State, and together with a series of embedded functions, cre-ates a unique urban space that is quirky and engaging. A green and vertical landscape that connects the city to the parklands, the hill provides active and passive recreational opportunities not readily available within Adelaide’s CBD. The hill also provides a series of ecological opportunities that are unique. The mass and height of the hill supports the climate control of interior and exterior spaces throughout the site through subsidence cooling, geothermal exchange, heat extraction via a thermal chimney and the storage of cooling energy in a mass cool chamber.

Characterised by its cultural frontage along North Terrace, the proposal incorporates the Museum of South Australia, Art Gallery of South Aus-tralia, Contemporary Art Gallery of South Australia, Museum of Adelaide and Aboriginal Gallery. These cultural uses are counterbalanced with uni-versity uses and residential accommodation, providing a well-balanced mix of programmes that aims to provide all-day activation to the site.To the eastern boundary of the site, a landmark mixed-use tower anchors the corner, providing residential accommodation and associated func-tions as well as ongoing economic impetus and activity. The 23-storey building accommodates public functions on the lower levels including a sport centre in connection with recreational functions of the hill and resi-dential apartments on upper levels. The building is designed to achieve a six star rating. The dominant horizontal elements of the tower archi-tecture allow the incorporation of green plantings at all levels, private balconies of various depths depending upon orientation, and incorpo-rates solar water heating units for all residences. The proposed building is seen as an iconic entry element into the city. It provides a bookend to the development along North Terrace and contributes to the broader city development patterns. The removal of connective obstructions between existing buildings pro-vides clear glimpses of the hill while simultaneously increases pedestrian permeability to the site. The hill and the proposed buildings along North Terrace and Frome Road are connected through a series of interconnected but clearly articulated plazas of varying dimension and character provide platforms for formal and informal gatherings, events, movement, and repose. They support Adelaide’s festivals and strengthen the East End and cultural boulevard activities. The vibrancy of public spaces and hill-park are at the core of the propos-al. This vibrancy is underpinned by a unique, unexpected and apparently whimsical hill-scape. It signifies the site and becomes a strong reflection of how creative thinking can turn a mundane demolition problem into a positive and unique outcome, contributing to the identity of a creative City and State.

The task of the competition was to present a solution which accounts for the local uniqueness and proposes a vision of a fully functional system for Soviet-era Väike-Õismäe apartment blocks. We propose to bring life to this space by bringing nature around brownfielding central pond. It will strengthen the community and relationship with it’s enviroment.

# GERULATA MUSEUMPlace: RusovceAuthors: Nice architects (T.Žáček, S. Pohlová, I.Žáček, R.Janata)Project type: Submission for Gerulata antique museum competition Year: 2013
The main idea of proposed museum object appear from the composition of traditional antique atrium house opened towards rest of the site. Antique elements as columned portico and stepped platform were used in modern way to avoid historicism, but still retain historical message. Many variations were used to find balance between antique and contemporary architecture.

The main idea was to create a library between the trees. Each tree level has it’s own atmosphere and different function. In contrast to organic shaped floors and plants, there are strict cube-shaped rooms, which isolate books/ readers from humidity/ noise. Envelope consists of transparent glazed façade and vertical louvres which serve as shading and load-bearing columns.

# HOUSES IN FIELDPlace: StefanovaAuthor: R. JanataProject type: Schematic designYear: 2014
Site is located on field behind existing typical village houses concentrated along main road. Site is long and narrow with one road shifted to north perimeter to create parcels with better orientation to sun. All houses are practically the same with one floor and pitched roof to build on typical rural houses in that area. Gable of the pitched roof also helps breaking monotone raster of road view.
# 9 TERRACE HOUSESPlace: Pezinok, SlovakiaAuthor: R. JanataProject type: Detailed designCurrent phase: ConstructionYear: 2013Site is located in cental part of Pezinok, where apartment block structure is ending and single-family detached houses are starting. Density of new structure is in between of both existing types but architectural expression is more connected to apartment building on South, which shares infrastructure and courtyard with.
Existing apartment building

# HOUSE IN BORINKAPlace: Borinka, SlovakiaAuthor: R. JanataProject type: Detailed designCurrent phase: ConstructionYear: 2013
section 2.floor plan
House is located in backyard of existing old rural house with parcel only 10 metres wide. It is half submerged into terrain because of steep slope. First floor contains cellar at fully submerged part and habitable room at part opened to backyard. Second floor is full-featured apartment with two bedrooms. Pitched roof is asymetrical, because roof windows were needed to avoid contact with adjacent parcel.

# HOUSE AT VINEYARDPlace: Modra, SlovakiaAuthor: R. JanataProject type: Detailed designCurrent phase: Built, surroundings in constructionYear: 2014
The house is located at a plot surrounded by vineyards with the outlook on the whole town of Modra. The massing needed to fullfill local regula-tions of roof shape and orientation so we adapted local archetype to our requirements. One storey part is dedicated to living room with pitched lifted ceiling to link the living room to the second floor and integrate it more to everyday life. The house was designed and inspected to meet ultra-low-energy standard ( 30 kWh/(m2a) )
