Headline Sponsor
Welcome to Freedom Festival 2016. This year marks nine years of Hull’s biggest arts festival: a family-friendly, diverse celebration of ‘freedom’, commemorating the work of anti-slavery pioneer and Hull MP William Wilberforce.
Throughout the festival we continue to explore and celebrate the city’s historic links to freedom, as well as challenging what freedom means to us in 2016 through some hard-hitting shows.
With over 200 performances by artists from over 25 countries, plus an extraordinary line-up of local and national artists, there’s something for everyone. Theatre, circus, dance, music, cabaret, spoken word, visual arts and so much more.
We hope that all festival-goers young and old have an unforgettable weekend and enjoy every moment of the festival, from day to night. I urge you to stay out into the evenings to enjoy our stunning night-time spectaculars and other evening highlights.
Prepare to be amazed.

“ Be brave and explore things you’ve never seen before. There’s so much to see and do and it only lasts three days…so whatever you do, don’t miss a minute of it.”

Made in Hull – bold, brave and creative This year is special. For the very first time the programme has been designed and delivered by our own team based in Hull. It is genuinely MADE IN HULL, thanks to Mikey Martins, our Artistic Director, and his team. They’ve done a marvellous job, being bold and brave in their creativity. The festival programme is incredibly rich and a huge effort has been put into offering something for everyone.
I hope you enjoy the wonder of what’s on offer over the weekend. And remember – to echo a phrase that unified the city in 2013 – that this is a festival that belongs to everyone.

Wired Aerial Theatre presents As the World Tipped
Spectacular, Circus Theatre
A real-life disaster movie in the sky, As The World Tipped is an ambitious, extraordinary and ‘gasp-worthy’ piece of aerial theatre which tells a powerful tale of an ecological crisis. The show combines dramatic film and visuals with breath-taking aerial performance, confronting one of the most pressing issues for the planet with spectacle, humour and emotion.
As The World Tipped is regarded as one of the finest large-scale shows to be produced by a UK company. Suspended above the audience in the night sky, performers literally and metaphorically slide toward disaster as they do battle with the effects of potential and drastic environmental catastrophe.

Gobbledegook Theatre presents Ear Trumpet
Children’s, Family, Theatre, Installation
Audiences of all ages are invited to delight in discovering the secret music under our feet, using a series of elaborate ear trumpets, created from brass instruments. The ear trumpets transform barely-audible sounds into noises, loud and clear – as if by magic.
A playful, musical installation about listening: about the sounds under the ground, the sounds you would miss if you didn’t listen for them. Sonic investigators have managed to track an exceptional auditory occurrence, which they have discovered runs under much of Britain.

British Sea Power have played atop the Great Wall of China, deep inside Cornish slate mines, at the Chelsea Flower Show and beside the diplodocus skeleton at London’s Natural History Museum. We would also like to thank the five local organisations – Humber All Nations Alliance (HANA), Hull Black History Partnership, Hull Amnesty Group, Hull University Union and WISE – that act as our Advisory Partners, providing valuable input into the development of the festival.
Thanks to our Creative Partners At Freedom Festival, we continually challenge ourselves to seek out and work with artists who are brave enough to further explore and debate concepts of freedom, from both a historical viewpoint and also in terms of what freedom means today; we rely on our creative partners to help us do that. These organisations – local, national and international – help us deliver a Freedom Festival programme that excites, inspires and continues to push boundaries each year. Thank you to:
