Our current value is….. Getting Along means being friendly and nice with classmates and adults, including those who have different backgrounds and cultures, working well in groups, solv-ing problems without fighting, following important school rules and helping to make my school a better place to live and learn Please consider discussing Getting Along with your child/ren this week.

West Coast Eagles Visit Marmion Primary School Marmion Primary School was fortunate to have a visit from the West Coast Eagles last week. On Wednesday, 26 July, Eagles’ ruckman Nathan Vardy ran a football clinic with our Interschool Football team. The Year 5 and 6 footballers were put through their paces by the Eagles’ recruit who was impressed with their endeavour and skill. The next day, at our parent assembly, former Eagle, Bradd Dalziel and Rick the Rock Eagle (the Eagles lively mascot), spoke to the school about ways to keep mentally and physically healthy. Both students and staff alike enjoyed the opportunity to share in the fun.

World Vision Money Chain We have just received our third World Vision child to sponsor, 8 year old Rizike Saidi Metete from Tanzania. Marmion P.S. has been sponsoring World Vision children since 2003. On Thursday 17 August, following the next student assembly, we will be having a money chain to help raise funds for this year’s sponsorship for Riziki. At yesterday’s student assembly, some Year 5 and 6 students presented a short PowerPoint and some skits to explain our World Vision sponsorship. Their skits showed how the children of Marmion P.S. could forgo one treat in the next fortnight so they can bring in $2 for the money chain. Please encourage your child in doing this, as we would like the children to be able to tell their classmates what they went without in order to donate their $2.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data - NCCD Marmion Primary School, along with all educational agencies throughout Australia, are required under the Education Regulation Act 2013 to provide information on students with disabilities and/or learning difficulties and the educational adjustments made to meet their needs. The data provided to the Australian Government will not include the name of the school or students. Information about the different types of needs, programs and resources the school uses to overcome barriers and support children with special education needs will be collected. The information collected helps the Government and the Department develop informed policies that acknowledge the level of resources needed in schools to meet the needs of all Western Australian students.

Jack The Wagtail Fundraiser On Monday 7 August some girls from year 4 will be holding a stall to raise money for Jack the Wagtail. We encourage your children to bring some money to buy some recess and support Jack the Wagtail.

Cross Country Results

Wow!!!! The 2017 School Cross Country was a closely fought event with Dolphins snatching back the trophy they lost last year. The Pre primary students showed us how to run with their amazing effort to complete the Year 3 course and with a smile as they crossed the finish line! Thank you to all the parents that came to support and the volunteers that helped around the course. The weather was kind to us and all the children ran extremely well with some amazing results. Congratulations to DOLPHINS who took out the 2017 Cross Country. Results: 1st DOLPHINS 349 2nd STINGRAYS 245 3rd SHARKS 227

Room 9 Ban The Bag Project Throughout Term 2, Room 9 spent time learning about the effects of plastic pollution on our oceans. The more research we completed, the more alarmed we became! Plastic waste is having a devastating impact on our oceans and the animals that live within them. We would like to start making a difference by sharing what we have learnt. All the research that we have gathered has been included on our Room 9 ‘Ban the Bag’ website. We know you will be blown away by the extent of the problem of plastic waste, particularly single use plastic bags, and the dramatic effects it is having on our oceans.

We have included plenty of information that will get you thinking and hopefully, persuade you to make some changes when it comes to using plastic products in your everyday lives. This is a problem that affects all of us! We all need to start making changes to ensure healthier oceans for generations to come. We encourage you to visit our website to find out more about plastic pollution and what is being done to combat it. We hope the frightening statistics and informative videos will encourage you to start making some small changes of your own when it comes to using plastic. The research we’ve collected has certainly had an enormous impact on us and each and every one of us has already started doing their bit to protect our oceans! Our project started out as a result of one idea put forward by Room 9, Year 5 students; Lachlan, Ben and Sam. Everything snowballed from there; the Ban the Bag project is now something the whole class is involved in and, over the course of the next two terms we will be sharing our research with you and attempting to affect change when it comes to using plastic products. The research we gathered during Term 2 really made us stop and think! We realise the problem of plastic pollution is a global one, but also realise that WE CAN make a difference! If we can educate people by sharing what we have learnt, we believe we can slowly convince others to make changes that will result in healthier oceans. So please visit our website. The statistics will blow you away and will help you to realise that the problem of plastic pollution is way bigger than you could ever have imagined. We challenge you not to be effected by what you read and see…. It truly is frightening and we need to act NOW!

Prepare to be amazed and horrified by these not so fun facts! 1. Every hour 200 000 single use plastic bags are being dumped

into landfill around the world. 2. Even though you may ‘recycle’ your plastic bags, only 3% of

them actually get recycled and made into other useable prod-ucts. Most of them end up in landfill!

3. Around the world, approximately 2 million single use plastic bags are being used to take home shopping every minute!

4. The average plastic bag is used for 12 minutes, at tops! 5. It takes anywhere between 20 - 1000 years for 1 plastic bag to

decompose.

SAFETY HOUSE The Safety House Program in WA is regularly run by the school community to support their students. Marmion Primary School with the support of the P & C had a fantastic Safety House Program until recently. Unfortunately we have had no one volunteer to fill the role in the past couple of years and we are looking for someone to step in. There is a register for the local area and it involves speaking with people to ensure they are home and can support someone if they feel threatened or in danger in the local area. If anyone would like more information please contact [email protected] or Ian Herbert. UNIFORM NEWS The old faction t-shirts are running out. Get into the uniform shop for the last of the “old stock”. Only to be worn and enjoyed for the rest of 2017. Buy an old faction top and get a bag for free! ART SHOW Have you booked the babysitter for the 21 Octer yet? Our MPS P&C Art Show is set to be a great night. And yes, there will be a bar! But to make sure we can buy a drink we need bar staff with a Responsible Service of Alcohol qualification. If you have this qualification can you help out for an hour on the night? Drop us an email at [email protected] All our parents will be very grateful for your help! CANTEEN NEWS Thank you to all our volunteers as we have almost all spots filled for the term. You can see a copy of the roster on our face book page, Mar-mites Facebook page or you can view the hard copy pinned up in the canteen so if you’d like to pick one of those last available dates, please let Katie know by emailing her on [email protected] We will be looking for some extra support on the sports day as we will need two representatives from each class to help hand out lunches. An email will be coming from you class representative soon to identify who those helpers will be. Please feel free to respond if you think you’d like to help. The Canteen has a new phone number: 0432 534 576 Sports Carnival As mentioned previously this is scheduled for Thursday 31 August and we will be looking for some extra helpers on that day as it is the biggest event on our yearly calendar. We will be providing lunch specials as we have done in the past. We will also be asking our wonderful community to donate baked goods to be sold for recess and throughout the day. Please keep your eye on this space for my details. We will be offering items from Subway, Sushi Master or a sausage sizzle. A form will be distributed shortly for you to submit an order, or you will be able to put an order in online once we’ve put the details out.
