PELAMIS-new technique for energy
generation
by
Paresh chauhan
The Pelamis (WEC) The Pelamis Wave Energy Converter is a
technology that uses the motion of ocean surface waves to create electricity.
The Pelamis machine is an offshore wave energy converter, operating in water depths greater than 50m.
principles The machine's long thin shape and low
drag profile minimises hydrodynamic forces, namely inertia, drag, and slamming, which in large waves give rise to large loads.
The machine responds to the curvature of the waves rather than the wave height.
how does pelamis operates?
Construction Details The Pelamis Wave Energy Converter is a semi-
submerged device, composed of cylindrical sections linked by hinged joints.
A single device is composed of four articulated sections joined by three power modules.
Technical detailsStructure

Total steel wgh - 380tons
Power Rated power - 750 kw
Generator type – Asynchronous
System voltage - 3phase,
415/690VAC, 50/60 Hz
Transformer - 950kVa step-up
Power Conversion Module (PCM)
Technical details Power take off - 4x ram
Ram speed - 0-0.1 m/s
Smoothing storage - high pressure accumulator
Working pressure - 100-350 bars
Power conversion - 2x variable motor
Generator - 2x 125 kW
Generator speed - 1500rpm
Mooring system The mooring arrangement of Pelamis needs to be designed
specifically for the site conditions.
Similar to a wind turbine foundation, which needs to be type approved, the Pelamis mooring system needs to be designed by OPD and adapted to specific site conditions.

Installation and removal proven
Operations have also been successfully carried out in darkness.
The Pelamis has been fully installed and grid connected within an hour of arriving on site.
At the end of an installation period it has been removed from site with a 12 minute operation, using a single vessel.
Proposal for India The country that presently use the Pelamis are
Portugal, Ireland, Spain and France.
Estimated power generated by pelamis is 2.25MW which currently meets the annual demand of 1500 family.
In India, the current demand is more now-a-days so if we propose this Pelamis in INDIA the current demand can easily be reduced.
future The Pelamis and its infrastructure are optimised for
mass production for multiple-machine wave farms.
As with every previous generating technology, Pelamis Wave Power expects costs to significantly fall with continued deployment into the market.
In the longer term it is believed that wave power projects using Pelamis machines have the potential to become one of the lowest cost forms of generation, particularly if the cost of conventional generation continues to rise.
CONCLUSION If this system proves to be economically possible, only 0.1%
of the renewable energy within the world's oceans could supply more than five times the global demand for energy.
It was the world’s first commercial scale machine to generate electrical energy into the grid from offshore wave energy and the first to be used in commercial wave park projects.
In Portugal, Pelamis System is now proving to be successful.
