Organic =
• Matter which is produced by living things
• Contains carbon
![Page 3: P p intro to organic ii #2](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042817/55a4a4da1a28abac308b47c3/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Before we focus on organic compounds…lets identify the concept
of inorganic• Non living• Never alive• Does not contain carbon.• Needed for life• Autotrophs organize these into organic
compounds….

What are some important INORGANIC compounds?
• H2O• O2
• CO2
• Ca, Fe, P, Mg, K, Zn (minerals)
• NO3-
(nitrates)

OXYGEN=Common name
• Molecular formula=O2
Structure:O=O
![Page 6: P p intro to organic ii #2](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042817/55a4a4da1a28abac308b47c3/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Water = polarity• Oxygen has a slight negative charge• Hydrogen has a slight positive charge
![Page 7: P p intro to organic ii #2](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042817/55a4a4da1a28abac308b47c3/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
• Polar atoms easily attract each other
![Page 8: P p intro to organic ii #2](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042817/55a4a4da1a28abac308b47c3/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Back to ORGANIC molecules• Carbon Compounds• Recall that Carbon forms 4 bonds• Readily combines with other atoms• Combines with itself as well.• Produced by autotrophs and heterotrophs

Carbon forms Chain molecules

Carbon forms Ring molecules

Organic compounds form closed rings along with the branches of the rings are called aromatic
compounds. The rings are formed with 6 carbon atoms only. As the name suggests, they give off very strong aroma. The number of variation of
ringed compounds is endless. Most of the perfumes and pleasant odors from fruits and
flowers are due to such aromatic compounds.

Four Important Organic Macromolecules

All are Synthesized the same way… they are made of smaller subunits..put together by dehydration synthesis

Dehydration synthesis- a process where H2O is lost when monomers combine to form long
chains called polymershttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7TdWLNhMtM

carbon dioxide.
• Is this an organic molecule?• How will this compound bond?• What does dehydration synthesis mean?• List 4 properties of carbon• What is a buffer?• What does polar mean? (do not refer to a
bear)
