OUR LADY OF GRACE
NEWSLETTER
CONCERT WEEK Thank you to all families for your support in the lead-up to our concert
on Friday night! The children are all very excited, and the rehearsals
have been going very well. Please see the information later in the
newsletter for more details. We are looking forward to a fun night.
MASTER PLANNING UPDATE We have met with Susan and Guy from Phillips/Pilkington Architects
for an initial consultation on our Master Plan. I was very impressed
with the maturity from the students involved in the consultation, their
ideas were well thought through and focused on their learning and
community.
PLANNING 2018 AND BEYOND All families will have received a 2018 planning form this week. Our
school structures, staffing and planning depends on the most
accurate information we can get for 2018. Please fill in this form and
return to it to school as soon as possible, but at the latest by Friday
15th September. If you have any questions about this, or would like to
discuss this please come in and have a chat.
You will also be aware that Our Lady of Grace will be in a year of
transition in 2018, with year 6’s remaining at Our Lady of Grace in
2019. This has some implications for 2018, as there will be no
‘graduating class’ in 2018, although our year 5’s will still be school
leaders. I would appreciate some feedback through the survey link
(below). The questions relate mainly to parents of children currently
in year 3 and 4, but I encourage all parents to respond.

NAPLAN
We will be receiving our 2017 NAPLAN results for
year 3 and year 5 learners in the next week. As a
staff, we will examine these results and data and
use this as a guide to further learning. We look at
the areas of growth for each child, and as a cohort
and ‘dig down’ to see where our learners need
further support. NAPLAN is a snapshot of your child’s
learning on that particular day, and is one
assessment alongside many formative and
summative assessments throughout the year. For
some children, the test situation can be daunting
and we do not emphasise the formality of the test,
nor place any greater emphasis on the results than
any other learning experience. Further information
regarding NAPLAN can be found at: https://www.nap.edu.au/docs/default-source/default-

ENHANCING LITERACY
Do not forget to come along to our parent session
on supporting your child and their literacy. Bill
Hansberry is a great presenter and will outline the
importance of phonics and give background and
research into why we are developing our phonics-
based literacy program here at Our Lady of Grace
School.
Tuesday 29th August, 6.45-7.45pm in the Our Lady of
Grace Church.
A crèche will be available for school-aged children.
This session will be beneficial for all parents and
carers of all ages. Look for the advertisement
further in the Newsletter. We hope to see you there.
OPTIONAL EARLY FINISH – FRIDAY 25TH AUGUST Due to the concert on Friday 25th August
parents/caregivers have the option of collecting
children from 12pm, so they are rested for the
performance. If you choose to collect your
child/ren early please sign them out through the
front office.
Thank you for your continuing support,
Kelly Campbell

Literacy Corner
Gentle Cindy Rule
Gentle Cindy reminds us that g & c will usually
be “soft” before i, e, and y.
G will say /j/ before i, e and y - ginger, gelatin,
gym
C will say /s/ before i, e, and y - cinder, cell,
cyclone
It is important to remember that the e, i or y
follows the c or g. If it is before the c or g, then
this rule does not apply.
Have you ever wondered why the word Cat
starts with a C but Kitty or Kitten start with a K?
It is the C & G rule in action.
Cat – c a t The c says “k”
BUT, if you were to spell Kitty, Citty, the C would
no longer be “k” sound it would be a “s” sound
as in “City.”
So in order to keep the “k” sound, we must
change the “C” in Cat to a K.
Same with Kitten. If we kept that C that we use
to spell Cat, we would have a Citten, and it
would be pronounced “S”itten.
Here are examples of the C saying “s”:
City Cyst Cycle Cement
Here are examples of G saying “j”:
Gem Gist Gym Gerbil
Gentle Cindy is a great graphic to remind us of
the C & G Rule.

The students finished the last week of
recycled art and craft with some very
creative work. They enjoyed making
houses out of recyclables and also filling in
stencils with cut up cereal box pieces. Next
week the social work students will be
starting a new theme to do at lunch with
the students.
Community News
On Friday 1st of
September, our
school will be
holding a
GREAT
BOOK SWAP
to help support
Indigenous
Literacy.
This involves the whole school supporting
Indigenous children in remote Indigenous
communities across Australia in a very easy
and simple way.
Each child is asked to bring in a book that they
have loved but CAN bear to part with. The
books will be in a central area where the
children can donate $2 for the right to choose
a “new” book !
Andy Griffiths is the Indigenous Literacy
Foundation Ambassador and this is what he
has to say…
“The Great Book Swap is a win-win. Not only
does it help raise money to improve literacy
skills in remote communities, but the
excitement and fun that a book swap
generates will help improve literacy levels in
your school as well”
As Book Week will be held just before our Book
Swap date, we would ask that all the children
bring in a book that they would like to swap on
Monday 28th August so that the children can
share their books with a buddy class. This will
help to advertise the books that will be
available and also help to build the
excitement.
Thank you for your anticipated support,
Anne Lindner, Steph Crowe and Meg Reidy

Dear Parents/Caregivers,
It’s that time of the year again and we
have our annual Book Fair coming up at
school. The students will get to preview
all the books for sale during Week 5. For
every book sold, our school receives a
generous commission from Scholastic
Australia which we then use to buy more
resources for our library, so that all
children will benefit.

The Premier’s Be Active Challenge is a South
Australian Government initiative to promote
health and well being in children. The
program challenges children to complete at
least 60 minutes of physical activity on at least
5 days of the week for at least 4 weeks.
Educators will be supporting your child to
complete the challenge. If they do so,
students will receive a medallion for their
efforts. For those who have completed the
challenge in successive years previous to this
one, they will receive medallions of a higher
level. For more information, please refer to
the Be Active Website:
http://www.pbac.sa.edu.au/Home.aspx
The challenge at OLOG has begun and will
close on the 2nd of September to give every
child enough time to complete the challenge.
I would love to see as many OLOG students
participate in the challenge as possible. It is a
great opportunity to stay active, and receive
great rewards for your hard work.
