What's it all about Call for Entries Last Years Bands
Band Shot
Murphy!s Live is all about mentoring up and coming Irish bands giving them
the opportunity to perform with some of Ireland!s most successful live acts
in venues across the country. With a high profile judging panel consisting
of leading industry professionals, bands are judged on their live
performance abilities in a number of heats in cities and towns such as
Dublin, Cork, Waterford, Limerick and Killarney. Murphy!s Live offers the
winning band a phenomenal prize worth "10,000 which includes an EP
launch with a record label, studio recording time, a national distribution
deal, full PR and a six month management deal.
Murphy!s Live 2007 saw an unprecedented amount of entries from up and coming, unsigned
Irish bands, reinforcing the fact that Murphy!s Live is growing from strength to strength each
year. The chosen bands in 2007 were Exit Pursued by a Bear and Citizen who supported
The Blizzards in Cork, SUDDYN & The Chapters who supported Messiah J & The Expert in
Whelan!s in Dublin. Dirty Face Kids and Philtre supported the Delerontos in Killarney, The
Distractions and Ilya K played support to Dae Kim in Waterford, Secret Police and Star
Belgrade supported Vesta Varro in Limerick and finally, Lost and SUPERJIMENEZ
supported Hybrasil in Dublin. Waterford Band, Ilya K won the Murphy!s Live 2007 title in
May and are currently in the studio recording.
Murphy!s Live 08 is going to be even bigger, better and louder this
year...application forms are available here for download
Don!t miss your chance to be part of Murphy!s Live 08!

Thank god for The Chalets. This is pop - reckless, libidinous, and
impertinent. It all began in a clamour of booze and hormones. Two girls,
two boys, and a drummer (as the joke goes), inspired by a weekend of
hedonism at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival somewhere in the south
of England, decided to form a band. Learning instruments, writing songs
and other such trivialities would be ironed out later.

Band Shot
Remarkably, this drunken notion actually took fruition and before long it was a whirlwind
of boy-girl face-offs, loud guitars, xylophones, nurse uniforms, and indie-rock kids
stunned into silence by this explosion of glamour in Dublin's bloke-y-local live scene.
Shockingly, Peepee, Pony, Dylan, Enda, and Chris had recorded
and released their first single by May 2004. 'Theme From
Chalets' begins with a twitching guitar, a shark in the water if you
like, that explodes into a love/hate punch-up of flirting and
seduction. On the flip side, 'Sexy Mistake' sees more boy-girl
playground psychology set to an addictive indie-rock crunch. This
song was used in heavy rotation on MTV for some daft
promotional campaign featuring farm animals with trendy
haircuts.
If you don't relate to either of these songs you were clearly never young.
Somewhere along the line The Chalets joined the ranks of Ireland's much-loved indie
institution, the Road Relish Singles Club, for a split seven-inch featuring the self-
explanatory 'Two Chord Song' with synthesiser-pop freak Neosupervital. This record is
worth buying alone for its spiffing sleeve design (designed by the band) featuring Pony
and Peepee re-imagined as cartoon space-babes.

monthly payments, but could be interested in prepaid as she spends half the year in france. Simone is also looking to compare a few
features of phones in the style she likes, so she can choose the one that's good for her.

User Needs Evaluation Report Project: 3G Site Needs
Report on Competitors
Mobile Phone Service Websites.
An Analysis of Consumer / User Needs. Clifton Evans

Project Document Description Page 2 3G Site Needs User Needs Evaluation Report
Date Confidential 10
th of June , 2007
Introduction Two inclusive inquiry focus groups took place as part of a requirements gathering process researching existing mobile phone carriers websites, and associated user needs, for a new competitor in the Irish mobile phone service market. Following these focus groups, a number of scenario driven use cases of key features were developed from the findings. These use case scenarios, and accompanying process flow documentation, give us high level analysis of the existing carrier’s websites in relation to key user needs. This report provides the summary findings, from both the focus groups and the use case scenarios, in the form of basic heuristic evaluations of the key features on these competitor’s websites. A much more in depth analysis, of every feature, would be appropriate when researching the actual design of any final product. The focus groups took place in Dublin on the 1
st of July 2007, and the scenario development and
recommendations occurred in the following weeks.
Research Objectives
• To identify needs and key features for a new mobile service website.
• To identify key features usage problems in the competitor’s sites, and develop recommendations based on this competitive analysis.
• To identify other needs and features, things that target users would want for an online ecommerce or information site.
• To identify generic usability factors that should be considered in order to improve the awareness of the key features and their usage.
Research Method Semi-structured focus group methodology: 2 groups with 5 people in each to identify mobile carrier website needs. 1 Hour session for each group, Process involving an initial look at competitor sites from printouts of sites, a post it session to identify priority needs, general questions on preferences for sites, and overall usability factors for using the websites.
Scenario based analysis of existing carrier’s sites using priority features / needs from focus group. Developing process flows and heuristic recommendations based on competitors sites.

Focus Group Profile Overviews Respondents were selected through a profile screener Group 1: Young, in a Relationship, using site for Personal Reasons Single, already mobile phone users, both contract and pre paid. They have been to their providers website, and have a relatively good understanding of the internet, Ages 25-35 Group 2: Older, Single, Business Users In a relationship, own a phone for work, and use it primarily for business. Some business phones paid for by company, or personal pans, but all phones are on contract. They have been to their providers website, and have a relatively good understanding of the internet, Ages 35-45
Focus Group Format The format for the workshops was a 1-hour session with all of the above groups involved in explaining their needs and desired features for the websites. The focus group adhered to an agenda, and followed the Script Guide (next page) informally. In brief the workshop covered the following areas:
• Review user concerns of competitor sites from discussion surrounding printouts. • Review user goals for mobile carrier sites in a Post-It session to identify priority needs, • Review existing and potential preferences for eCommerce, and other, sites. • Discussion on overall usability factors for using the websites.

1. Existing Carrier Sites (Via Printouts)
What do you want to know when looking at these sites, what are your inclinations? Do you have any overall suggestions to make these processes easier? Which site is nicer, for what reasons?
2. Overall Usability Factors in Existing Sites Are there any small details on the existing sites which are annoying, time consuming, or could be better? Your specific LEA initiative or area of the site (micro-site)
3. Post-It Session to Identify Needs Write down the central needs for you as a customer. Identify any features which are or would be attractive to you.
4. General Preferences on Websites and eCommerce Etc. Any general preferences for the web? What about eCommerce preferences?

Feature / Needs Preferences Respondents where asked to write down specific features, during the post it session. As well, any other needs and features that came out of the other parts of the sessions were recorded and added to the focus group documentation. The following are the features / needs as seen in the focus groups:
Vodafone O2 Meteor Group 1
Pricing clarity is needed.
Search Reliability needs definite improvement.
Would be much better by using Google.
Pay monthly better than pay as you go? (Need a
Direct Comparison.) Working out what the
best thing for you is pretty hard.
You can compare plans, only two though.
Lots of information and it's bombarded Just a bit wordy, the
whole vodafone site. Vodafone has text from
site. Webtext.
O2 is nicer. But can't compare
plans, again. Too many plans. Doesn't
understand the plan names. The Blue is fresher than the
Red, not imposing or angry. O2 is much more direct to the
the information. But the search is horrible.
Brings up everything with the word.
Other call charges are much easier to find.
Cleaner, it feels. Webtext, O2 has it too.
Tabs and breadcrumbs make it easier.
Comparing phones is difficult.
Meteor is far less bombarding.
Straight to the price plans.
Information design is better, clearer,
no need for in your face overly verbose definitions, or marketing blurb.
Because the vocabulary is in our
regular usage, no need to over state. Is there a deal for changing
providers? Incentives? Splash pages are fine. There's a
whole minimalist attitude going on, the one page scroll model, eCommerce has less clutter, it's an
improvement in general. Topping up for pre paid should be
easy
Insights/and anecdotes
Prepaid Plans, more than one, versus
Monthly direct comparison essential
Search results are unreliable
The ideal interface elements are search, tabs and
breadcrumbs Easy Phone comparison
essential
Straight to the point navigation is ideal.
No need for excess language.
Need online top up.

Zion Prototype Screen Evaluation - Clifton Evans
Concept Model (Confirmation and Ideation)
One of the major considerations in the original concept model of the system that I developed was to allow for the concepts of Ideation and Confirmation, from the perspective of the customer or client of the OSR. In order to meet these needs I think there are few key components still missing from the system, features that would help the client, particularly in terms of Confirmation, but also in terms of Ideation.
Outgoing Messaging
Essentially the big concern in terms of Confirmation is the messaging model, and while this is met to a certain degree with the sending of itineraries and the generation of reports, I think a lot could be done with the integration of a SMS, or MMS, messaging engine. Any number of messaging forms could be applied, email, post, telephone, fax, web alerts as well as text, and employing any of these would go a long way to establishing an immediate and considerate information of the client as to the 'completeness' or 'immediateness' of their recent transaction or communications. These messages, text or otherwise could also be well used in the system for Outgoing Messaging to not only the Client, but other OSRs, FBOs, etc.
Incoming Messaging
In order to meet the conceptual model of Ideation within the system, it is employed almost precisely in the same model as Confirmation, but backwards, as it were. Ideation is essentially the concept of realizing an idea, from the clients' side in this case most importantly, so that the OSR is able to keep track of any Alerting from Incoming Messages, i.e. updates via email, text, etc, regarding timelines, future schedules, changes, etc. Many clients will likely occasionally prefer to have a 'paper trail' or at least to communicate in a non-verbal way when making communication with the OSRs. They may also see it as a faster, and more efficient mode of communication for minor updates, etc. Of course the business needs on this would vary, and having a communication model outside of the telephone would have security issues etc. Perhaps this communication could be done through a web address, or with passwords, account codes, or the like. Like with the Confirmations, and Outgoing Messaging, Incoming Messaging would likely help the communications 'internally' as well, with other OSRs, FBOs, etc.
Actions and Language Consistencies (Labeling Patterns)
It's important at this stage to revisit the original labeling recommendations, the document called Language Consistencies. Considering we spent a good deal of effort and time establishing that language, we should look at it an validate the labels in the system, particularly in terms of actions. As well, there are a few other interface elements which have come about since the prototypes have started coming together, actions contained within Menus, the Inline Editing, Overlays, etc, which should be given some consistency at this point.
Action Patterns
The largest concern is the Action Buttons (small icons, buttons, and even menus), as they are the elements from the original Language Consistencies doc that we ironed out earlier
on in the project. The most effective model for designing these, once the language consistencies have been applied, is to establish a hierarchy of sorts, a mental model, where the same labels occur in the same places, and their positioning is consistent, both on the screen and in the flow of screens. An easy way to do this is to establish a hierarchy of actions, or buttons, in terms of importance, and to have a visual design applied to those actions that is consistent. The placement of the individual buttons should be relatively easy to maintain consistency on, once a visual model has been established. A good reference for this is: http://www.google.ie/search?q=lukew+form+design

New Examples
There are a few other potential opportunities to surface information in this system which may com in handy to the user. The most obvious and perhaps more personable recommendation is the inclusion of a photo of the client, particularly on the Overview screen, as this would apply a personal and human quality to the system. There are also likely pieces of information from the Account screen or Contract screen which could be surfaced to other areas, perhaps anything that is constantly retrieved from those areas before going to another area. Also, the Alerts / Notifications are very well placed in the redesign so far, but I envision that these will quickly either outgrow, or become unsuitable for these positions within a given amount of time. As the system is dynamic, the Alerts / Notifications need a dynamic location, something that can be configured in preferences, either made visible in certain areas, hidden, blocked, or limited, etc. This would go along way to improving the control the OSR has over their booking process. Also, as a side note the 'Important Details' Box which currently sits on the Trip Builder screen could easily become a detachable Window, i.e. Toolbar widget in itself.
Private Accounts / Contracts (Security)
Another final and perhaps moot recommendation is the ability to set up private accounts, contacts, or contracts within accounts, so that more private, or secure, information is not readily accessible. This could apply to Government, Military, or other Confidential information, such as private v. public trips, or family v. personal trips. The recommendation here is to simply have a confidential option selected on those entries, and allow for a password that would reveal them.
Conclusion
In conclusion the overall system is very well redesigned. There are very few concerns remaining from a usability or information architecture perspective. The system has been made many times more usable, and I am positive the that both the productivity and the satisfaction of the users, the OSRs, will go up substantially. This will almost undeniably result in happier and more confident clients as well, as their level of service will improve as will the turnaround time for interacting with the company.
As the nature of this audit, is to be brief, and succinctly offer recommendations can be implemented in a given amount of time, I have attempted to make sure the major recommendations have been made. That being said, there is actually very little more I can reflect on without going into a full usability study, or at least interviewing users with a working prototype. If there is more time available, I will be able to look at a few minor things in further detail, if needed, but I do think that the majority of my concerns have been outlined in this document.
