From the Principal…
Dear Families,
Welcome back to Term Four! Hard to believe we are already into the last term
of the 2015 school year! I hope all families had a fantastic holiday break and
had the opportunity to relax in preparation for another high activity term. I
hope many of us have recovered from our disappointment with the football
finals!
Missing a bomber jacket? Missing a windcheater? Missing a shirt? Missing
underwear?? Week One and the lost property box is overflowing with articles of
clothing, many of which are UNNAMED. Large amounts of clothing are collected
from the yard after school each day and placed in the lost property box outside
Room8 (6U). Please check the box for lost property, make sure all articles of
clothing are named and ENCOURAGE children to be responsible for their own
belongings.
Hats! Hats! Hats! At Monday morning assembly it was wonderful to see so many
children wearing their school hats. This is a timely reminder that at school we
have the school hat as a compulsory part of the school uniform during Term
Four. Please ensure that the hat is labelled clearly with your son’s or
daughter’s name and is included on a daily basis in the school bag. It is really
important that as a school community we encourage our children to support our
“Sunsmart” policy.
Yard Duty Supervision
A reminder to all families that teachers are on yard duty from 8.45am each
morning before school and until 3.45pm each afternoon after school. Children
should not be dropped off or left unsupervised in the school yard before or after
these times. We appreciate your support in this supervision and safety of our
children. Please reinforce with your child (particularly some of our older
children) that under no circumstances should they arrive at school and then
leave the school grounds to visit the shop. It is also important that children are
aware of their attendance at the Out Of School Hours Care Program. We can
pass on messages which have been phoned through to the office only if
absolutely necessary. It is important to remind some children of their
attendance at the program as they leave home each day!
Integrated Curriculum Units AusVELS Term 4
It was great to be able to get around to classrooms yesterday and today and see
our children engaged in a wide range of stimulating, challenging and engaging
learning activities. Our teachers work collaboratively in their teams to provide
Integrated Units of work based around the AusVELS

Kidproof – Protecting Kids Online
A reminder that our Kidproof Protecting Kids Online Program is to be held in the
school hall on Thursday, October 15th. Information technology is by far the
most common influence among young people. Deepdene is partnering with
Kidproof to present a seminar providing parents with practical, easy to use ways
to talk to children about internet behaviour and ways to keep safe. This is a
particularly relevant, important and informative session which is being offered
to the school community. A hardcopy of the flier advertising this important
parent presentation is included in the newsletter this week. Please return the
reply slip to your classroom teacher if you would like to attend our parent
information session.
School Planning / Enrolments 2016
As detailed planning for 2016 is now well underway, it is essential that the
school is notified of any student in Levels Foundation – Level 5 who is not
intending to return to Deepdene Primary School in 2016. I also remind parents
with a Foundation aged child for 2016, who have not yet enrolled, to do so as a
matter of urgency. Remember all new Foundation enrolments require a copy of
your child’s Immunisation and Birth Certificates as part of the enrolment
process. In some cases you may need to provide a passport, for example, if
enrolling from overseas for the first time in an Australian school.
If your son or daughter will NOT be returning to the school next year please
complete the attached notice and return to the school office as soon as
possible.
Prep / Foundation 2016 Enrolment
If you are currently a member of the school community and have a child ready
to commence school next year please call into the office to book a Foundation
enrolment meeting time if you have not already.

SCHOOL NEWS
Thanks to the donation of funds from the PA, the school was able to buy a giant size projector screen
combo for the gym. To celebrate this amazing addition to the schools resources we will be holding fun
movie night in the gym. We will be showing 2 movies on consecutive Fridays. Although the movie
nights have been divided into classes, siblings and families are more than welcome to attend both ses-
sions if they choose. This is a family event so no drop offs, however parents may arrange for an alter-
native adult to supervise their child on the night.
Friday 16th October, 2015: Mr Peabody & Sherman (Foundation to Grade2/3)
Gates open: 5.30
5.30 - 6.10 Pizza orders available & candy bar

There will be a candy bar available on the night, offering mini choc tops, chips, etc so bring some cold

We will be offering pizza by the slice thanks to Carmine’s Pizza. We understand Fridays is a rush and
parents need a day off from cooking. Pizza orders will be taken in advance (order form sent home).

limited opportunity to purchase pizza on the night if you have forgotten to order.

Bring Your Own Device
(BYOD) - Parent Survey
Deepdene Primary is investigating the introduction of
a BYOD (Bring your own Device) program. BYOD is
where students are allowed to bring their personal
devices (eg iPad, Tablet) to school and use them with
the school wireless network. There is a lot to consider when implementing a BYOD program and we must
determine whether it is the right move for our school. We need your input and have developed a survey for you
to complete - the results will guide us as to which direction to take.
To participate in the survey, please click on the following link:
BYOD - Parent Survey(http://goo.gl/forms/SJ7MLofWdZ)
A link to the survey is also available from the school website. The survey will remain open until the end of
October.
Many thanks for your valuable feedback.

So how can you protect your own children in a connected world?
Deepdene Primary school is partnering with Kidproof Melbourne to present a Protecting Kids
Online. This seminar provides parents with practical, easy to use ways to talk to kids about
internet behaviour and plenty of ways to keep them safer.

SCHOOL NEWS
Term 4 Update from PA
Welcome back to the final term of this school year, PA has had a busy year with a range of successful community events.
Woolworths Earn and Learn Thank You
Thank you Selina Coia for coordinating the Earn and Learn campaign and to all the helpers who assisted with the
‘stickathon’ to prepare the paperwork for submission.
Telstra Grant Thank You
Thank you to Irene Ntontis and Nadine Courmadias for preparing and submitting paper work for this Telstra grant of
$1,200. PA are planning to purchase additional outdoor furniture with this funding.
Term 4 Activities
9/10 - Icy Pole Fridays. Thank you to Jasmine Kolah for continuing to convene this much anticipated weekly event, Icy
Pole Fridays generate a substantial profit to the PA each term.
16/10 - Family Movie Nights in the Gym : Foundation - Year 2. Thank you to Irene Ntontis for suggesting and convening this
first Family Movie Night. These events are now possible due to data projector installation in the hall, a project funded by PA
in Term 3. Full details will be available in the newsletter closer to the event date.
23/10 - Family Movie Nights in the Gym : Year 3 - Year 6 .
20/11 - Ladies Lunch. Thank you to Marcela Miranda for organising this highly anticipated social event. Tickets will be on
sale 02/11 and 04/11, full details will be available in the newsletter closer to the event date.
2016 Calendars and Cards. Thank you to Mary-Anne Cook and Stephanie Barrow for coordinating this fund raising event
for PA. The cards and calendars from last year were very high quality, full details on ordering will be available in the
newsletter shortly.
Term 4 PA Meetings
Please come and join us if you are available on 16/10 and 13/11 starting 9.00am in the staff room.
2016 Committee and Events
Next year will see a turnover of some key positions on the PA. We have been fortunate to have the support of some long
standing committee members, but we bid those committee members farewell as their children move onto high school. PA
is in need of support in order that it may provide a wide range of highly anticipated community building events and fund
raising projects. Without volunteers to schedule, coordinate, support and account for these events, PA may not be in a
position to offer these events. As a reminder, here is the schedule of 2015 events that PA has provided to your children and
the school community.
· Icy Pole Fridays
· Social Get Togethers
· Hot Cross Buns
· Move Nights
· Mothers’ Day Stall
· Lap-a-thon
· Disco
· Croissant Morning Tea
· Father’s Day Stall
· Footy Pie Day
· Cards and Calendars
· Ladies Lunch
· Christmas Chocolates
· Year 6 Graduation
If you are interested in discussing the 2016 committee, please contact us at [email protected] or speak
with any of us if you spot us in the school grounds!
2016 Big Day Out
This year PA funded the installation of a data projectors in the school hall, a substantial project that will provide a valuable
resource to our school community. This project was made possible primarily from the success of the 2014 Big Day Out, an
event which raised a significant amount of money for PA. The PA requires a committee of volunteers to coordinate the
2016 Big Day Out, ideally having this committee in place shortly. The current PA committee are a small, enthusiastic group
who are already coordinating a large range of activities. In order for The Big Day Out to run, a separate committee that will
be fully supported by the PA is required. This event will not be possible without volunteers nominating early to assist.
Regards
Susan de Weger
