1) Common Blogging Terms

Blog

A blog is short for web log, or online diary Earliest blogs were known as “zine”

Post

A blog post is a new entry for your online blog

Tag/Category

Sometimes, blog posts have tags or categories which allow similar posts to be grouped by some common theme

RSS

RSS is an XML (eXtensible Markup Language) format for your blog posts to be shared with other online resources or with an RSS reader such as Google Reader

RSS is an acronym for Really Simple Syndication (most common)

Sometimes RSS is referred to as a feed Atom is another format for blog post syndication

CMS

A CMS allows administrators or users with proper permissions to modify content of a website that may include blog posts, images, and overall layout

CMS is an acronym for Content Management System Many CMS solutions offer inline WYSIWYG (what you see is

what you get) editors that simulate document editing such as Microsoft Word

Wordpress

Wordpress is by far the most popular CMS and blog engine

Wordpress has a lot of capabilities that can be extended if hosted away from Wordpress or if you pay for premium services

Wordpress now hosts Microsoft Windows Live Spaces Wordpress has both pay and free versions

Blogger

Blogger.com is now owned by Google Blogspot is now part of Blogger.com Integrates with Google+ (Google’s version of Facebook) Limited theme support and lack of overall customization Blogger is known as a blog engine and not a CMS

system Blogger is a free blog engine

TypePad

TypePad is gaining momentum as one of the more popular blog platforms

One of the top reasons bloggers use TypePad is for the theme customization

TypePad only has pay models

Movable Type

Movable Type was once the second most popular blog engine

Since 2003, only 2 major versions of the application have been developed

Movable Type has help influenced other former software titles from Six Apart including TypePad (3) and LiveJournal (5)

Movable Type has both a free Open Source version and Premium versions

LiveJournal

LiveJournal is only available online LiveJournal contains a “friends” list capability that

allows users to syndicate other feeds on their journal Although over 50% of the traffic of LiveJournal is from

the US, almost 20% is from Russia
