How the project started:
To support local industry and help develop a solar employment base, we chose to become involved with this project.
In our region, we have a solar manufacturing plant that expressed a need for rural Photovoltaic installers, and we have a local community college with an established a solar program.

Renewable Energy Project
Challenges, positives and lessons learned:•Challenge: late grant start date •Positive: Grant extension to June 2012 - allowed for a 3rd class.
•Positive: Job Developer brought on the project•Challenge: Planned 4 week internships- Employers and students requesting more time.
•Challenge: Developing solar skills while building employment capacity in the region. Takes 2-6 weeks to develop an totally new internship worksite with this new energy sector because need to educate each employer on students’ skills and employment opportunities.
•Learned: Large potential for self-employment. Contacted UMD Entrepreneurial Program to come and speak to class.
