MODEL EXPO 2010ENTRANTS
COMPLIMENTARYCOMPETITION
RESULTS
When I thInk about the best way to describe the outcome of this year’s
Model Expo, there’s only one word that comes to mind and that is, ‘amazing’.
During the early stages of planning for the 2010 event, if someone had said to me that this year’s Model Expo was going to be even bigger and better than the previous year, then I may have been forgiven for not taking them too seriously. Unbelievably though, this is exactly what
happened and we were able to capitalise on the previous years success and make this year’s show the biggest and best to date.
The many traders that attend Model Expo, also now recognise that it is the ‘must attend’ event of the year and again this was demonstrated by
their unprecedented demand for space, to the extent that a small number of applicants had to be declined. Although this may be seen an enviable position to be in, every attempt is made to accommodate as many of the traders as possible within the available space, with five (5) new traders attending the show for the first time this year. So the message to all of our traders, or potential traders, is that you must get in early or you will miss out.
A variety of clubs also participate in Model Expo each year - in ever increasing numbers (14) - with one club each from South Australia and Western Australia making it a truly national event. Some clubs – including those from interstate – also went to the effort of creating themed displays, whilst others were just content to display a selection of their member’s models and use the occasion to merely promote their club and attract new members. This aspect has now become such an important part of the Model Expos overall success that every club is given the opportunity to attend and participate.
However, the real purpose of the three days is to host the Australian Open Plastic and Scale Modelling Championships, with this year’s competition attracting a wide field of competitors (209) from across the country (ACT, NSW, QLD SA, VIC and WA) and the Tasman (NZ). Although no new records were set this year, the number of entries was still very high (633) and the sheer diversity and standard had to be seen to be believed. A number of changes were also made to the competition categories to ensure they reflect the current trends within the hobby and remain relevant. On the whole these appeared to be well received and as a result of feedback are reviewed each year, to ensure we get it right.
A hugely successful Swap & Sell attracted a record number of sellers (60) and buyers, all of whom were eager to find a bargain. Its continued success can be attributed to the changes made the previous year and from lessons learned, which have now firmly established it in its new location.
So upon reflection, the success of the 2010 Model Expo is the culmination of a number of things:• The Model Expo committee’s dedication and hard work, with the
assistance of many helpers, to make it all happen.
• The ongoing support of our traders and sponsors who make it all possible, and
• The continued support of the clubs, competitors and public (34% increase in attendance) who make Model Expo the success that it is.I look forward to seeing you all again, on the Queen’s Birthday long
weekend in June, for Model Expo 2011.

Dear Model Expo competition entrant and fellow modeller,
Thank you for making Model Expo 2010 such a wonderful success. This year’s event attracted a good number of entries and more visitors than at any time throughout it’s 28 year history.
Model Expo is a joint initiative of model clubs across Australia. It provides a unique opportunity for modellers and enthusiasts of all interests and skill levels to share their ideas, knowledge and enjoyment of plastic and scale modelling. The Australian Open Plastic and Scale Modelling Championships provide a wonderful spectacle for the wider community to learn more about the art of modelling and how they can participate in this most interesting hobby.
Model Expo 2011 is fast approaching and should be the events biggest and brightest yet. Following on from the success of this year, Model Expo 2011 will benefit greatly from increased participation of clubs, the model industry and sponsors.
The vision and mission provides a framework, that will ensure the ongoing success of Model Expo and the Australian Open Plastic and Scale Modelling Championships for many years to come.
The vision: To promote the art of plastic and scale modelling
The mission: Model Expo’s mission is to create a greater awareness among the wider and modelling community of the benefits and opportunities provided by plastic and scale modelling.
through a major national event that: • provides a greater recognition of the opportunities (professional and recreational) provided by plastic and scale modelling • provides a competition for the widest variety of plastic and scale model categories • provides recognition of the skills and talents of individual modellers and clubs by the modelling and wider community • Provides the opportunity for plastic and scale modelling to be recognised as part of the wider arts community, and • provides the opportunity for participation and enjoyment by model club members, individuals and visitors
Model Expo 2011 will be held at the Sandown Exhibition Centre, June 11-13, so bring your friends and join us in making Model Expo 2011 a great success for modellers, clubs, sponsors and visitors alike.
