A wildfire is any instance of uncontrolled burning in grasslands, bush, or forest. Wildfires destroy property and
invaluable natural resources, and may threaten the lives of people and animals. Wildfires can occur at any time
of the year, but usually occur during hot, dry weather. During this unprecedented time in our country, wildfires
have added to the crisis. It is unbelievable that Belizeans wake up during the early morning hours to the
disgusting smell of smoke and even toxic fumes. Many are asking the government to take action to alleviate this
incredibly unhealthy problem. People from across the country are uncomfortable with this situation. The
Department of the Environment has identified the use of burning to prepare land for agriculture as a leading
cause of wildfires. The reckless burning of garbage and the setting of unattended fires also play a role. The
government has toughened the laws and have been keeping a look out for fire outbreaks. They ask citizens to
use alternative methods for land preparation and to not burn garbage and yard debris at home.
Complete the following table with 5 words you identified from the paragraph.

The Respiratory System
Animals and humans need oxygen in order to support life. Humans get oxygen from the air through their
respiratory system. The respiratory system is composed of the nose, mouth, trachea, lungs, and diaphragm. The
diaphragm is a thick muscle that separates the lungs from the abdomen. The diaphragm pushes down while the
rib cage pushes out, sucking air into the body through the nose or mouth. The air passes though the trachea, a
tube that connects the nose and mouth to the lungs. The lungs are full of tubes that get smaller and smaller,
ending in tiny sacks called alveoli. When the air reaches the alveoli, blood picks up the oxygen and drops off
waste gas called carbon dioxide. When the gases have been exchanged, the diaphragm pushes upward and the
ribcage pushes inward. Carbon dioxide is pushed out of the body through the trachea and the nose or mouth.
The entire process of taking in oxygen and expelling, or removing, carbon dioxide is called respiration.
