President’s Message
Fall is in the air! What a gorgeous time of the year andI think this year the Fjords are especially happy for Fall toarrive, LESS BUGS! I know I’m ready for less bugs! Boy,
what a year for heat and bugs. It’s a GREAT thing we have such a hardy breed. They sure do put up with alot don’t they? They can be shiny show horses or durable work buddies, no matter what we ask of them, they are willing to please!
With the winter meeting of 2010 behind us, our 25th anniversary show behind us. Let me say againTHANK YOU to all who started the show 25 yrs ago, all who helped keep it going, all who helped thisyear behind the scenes or at the scenes, or those that come and showed your horse(s). We all make it whatit is, a great show! This year, if you were not able to attend, you missed a fantastic special performance forthe community.
The ”Fjords Got Talent” show was a huge hit and showed that Fjords DO have Talent, PLUS our mem-bers do too! It was a great memory maker not only for the community of Blue Earth but for all of us there aswell. Again, thank you everyone for helping make our 25th anniversary show a huge success. Here’s to an-other 25 yrs of showing the Fjord horse!
Now, we can look forward to wonderful trail riding this fall, as I’m sure the colors will be changing soon. The days will be getting cooler and that crisp clean air, which wakes up the body and soul, just makes youfeel good. We also have the winter meeting 2011 in the planning stage. We are looking at a couple of sitesand will fill you in as we get closer. Anyone with topic ideas, please contact myself or Wanda Hase who isorganizing the meeting this year.
Another subject I would like to bring up is election of officers. We will be having a few openings this yearfor officers, not to mention a Co-Show chair position as well. Please give this some serious thought, this isYOUR club. If you are interested in keeping it going for another 25 yrs, if you have ideas to improve theclub, if you like to get involved with planning, organizing I’m sure we have a spot for you. Really, considerrunning for an officer position and or ask to be considered for the Co-Show Chair position. This is an ap-pointed position.
Think we can all say this has been a busy year for each and every one of us. That just seems to be what theworld has thrown at us. I just want to say to those that help in whatever why with our club THANK YOU,it is appreciated and together we accomplish much. Have a great fall and Happy Fjording everyone.

Our 1st Time at the Midwest Fjord Horse Breed Showby Carson Meyer
Ibought my first Fjord 3 years ago. I became interested in the breedwhen I first saw them at the Midwest Horse Fair, which is also where Ifound the mare that I have today. In the three years I have owned her,
she has made great progress as a show horse. This past year I began to takeher to more and more shows. I thought that this was the year we wereready to take on the next level of showing and see how she would do whenbeing judged at a breed show. With lots of support from a large number ofpeople I was ready to go.
The Blue Earth, MN show was the farthest I have ever traveled to showmy horses. The amount of planning that was required to go this distancewith horses and people surprised me. When I arrived at the fair grounds somuch was running through my mind. Where do I go? Where are our stalls?Do I have to sign in? Where do we leave the trailer? What about shavingsfor the stalls? It was a bit chaotic at first trying to get everything straight-ened out. The people were very friendly and helped guide us to where weshould be and what we had to do.
The most memorable thing about that first day of showing was hearing theannouncer’s voice announce the start of the show. I was back at the trailergetting dressed while the opening ceremony was taking place. As the an-nouncer spoke and the anthem was played I thought to myself: “This is it!”I had entered as many classes as I could (whether I was good at them ornot) because I wanted my horse to have as much ring time as possible. Skyview Sylvia “Sonja” and I were in showman-ship, halter, English, jumping, and western classes.
Throughout the course of the show I experienced good and bad moments with my horse, but in the end all was well. Iwalked away with two 4th places and four 2nd places. My impressions of the show were mixed. The people who attendedwere enthusiastic about Fjords. I also noticed that a few people had brought trainers with them who had trained theirhorses and worked with the animal at the show until it was time for the owner to mount up and enter the ring. Whilethis made me feel a bit intimidated seeing people with professional trainers there, in the end it made me feel better aboutmyself and the placements I received. Knowing that I had put two years of training on my horse, with no professionalhelp, and to see her come in 2nd place to someone who had a trainer, made me feel that I was on the way to becoming atrainer myself.
Overall the show was really worth going to! It was well organized, classes were run in a timely manner, and it was clearwhen classes were starting. I’ve been to shows where it’s hard to tell what is going on and you end up being late for aclass. The variety of people that I met and the different skill levels I saw made me feel less nervous at this, my first bigshow.
I want to return next year. Knowing now what sort of competition there is will help me better prepare Sonja and myself. This show was very important to me. It was my first chance to see how one of the horses I have trained would do at ashow of this magnitude. I aspire to be a trainer when I am older and seeing her do as well as she did really boosted myconfidence in my riding. It was a good first experience and I cannot wait to see what next year will bring.

Wood’s Kandi - What can a Fjord do for you?
This amazing horse has literally done it all! If you don’t believe it, here is what thislittle mare did at the 25th Annual Midwest Fjord Horse show:
Halter, Showmanship, Single Pleasure Driving ,Single Reinsmanship, Trail, TeamLog Skid, Farm Hitch, Turnout, Drive & Ride, English Pleasure, English Equitation,Dressage Suitability, Hunter Hack, Team Pleasure Driving, Team Reinsmanship,Western Pleasure, Western Horsemanship, Gambler’s Choice, Double Jeopardy, PickYour Route, Plug Race, Barrel Race, Pole Bending, Ride A Buck, Farmer’s Race
She placed in just about every class that she went in. Kandi proved just how versatileshe was by winning the Versatility Championship and the Reserve Adult High Point. Not too shabby for a 12 year old, under 14 hand Fjord who showed in a total ofaround 30 classes!
I love to write about this horse because I am so proud of her! Kandi and I have comealong way in the past few years. This was finally our year! All of our hard work was worth it and we had fun doing it! Allin all, it is not about all the ribbons and trophies we have earned, but it about the relationship we have developed overthe years. I give a huge thanks to my parents (Dawn & Tyler Schlickman) for giving me the opportunity to work withthis mare and to my husband Ryan for supporting me in this “hobby” of mine! I am not sure what is next in store for us,but I know I have a great partner for the ride! ,
Make sure you hug your Fjord today and everyday!

Fjords Got Talent -25th Anniversary Fjord Show Celebration
On July 20th, in conjunction with the 25 Anniversary Fjord Horse Show, a marvelous demonstration of how ver-satile and talented our beloved Fjords are was presented. The following photos show just part of the fun thatwas had.
In the Land of Oz (which makes the editor wonder why her horse Oz can’t jump), a jumping presentation with PattiJo Walter, Brittany Zembe, Eby Higdon, Carson Meyer, Joni Griffin and Heike Lewandowski. Horses were Voss, Fiona,Sophie, Jock, Thor and Sammy.
Western Reining Andrew Heinrichs performed a freestyle reining pattern, riding Spruce Hills Marianne.
Hitches: Single, Team Log Skid, Unicorn Lisa Lovett and her 6 year old Fjord Emma drove a single hitch. JanEthington and Rokida’s Gyri and Rokida’s Wylla showed us how log skidding is done. Dennis Holtz drove a unicornhitch, an unusual hitch with 3 horses.
Hitches: 4 up and 4 abreast Bill Jensen from Kasson, Minnesota, drove a standard 4 horse hitch. Dave Lusty andgranddaughter Megan showed us some speed with his Fjords Marla, Maddie, Bruno and Barry hitched 4 abreast
6 Horse Hitch Bob and Therine Gudknecht showed us their 6 horse team of Reinhart, Alvin, Heinrichs Farms Mem-phis, Ashwood Norman, Sawdust Acres Hannah and Sawdust Acres Kari. Now that’s horsepower!
Pas de Deux From the power of six to the grace of two. Wendy Mevis on Karl and Allison Austin riding Arne pre-sented an interpretation of Phantom of the Opera in a duet for dressage.
CED Demonstration Heike Lewandowski, recently home from a tour of Iraq, demonstrated that Fjords can also sat-isfy the need for speed. With Phil Odden as her navigator, she and her stallion Thor show us how it’s done with amarathon cart negotating the obstacles. Heike and Thor also presented the colors during the national anthem eachmorning at the beginning of the day’s events.

Scandinavian Booth at Blue Earth a Modest Success
In a first-time effort, the Midwest Fjord Horse Club set up a “Scandinavian Treasures” booth at the 2010 BlueEarth Fjord show. Thanks to club members who supported this booth with purchases from the wide variety ofitems.
Total profit was $361.65 – a bit less than we’d hoped for, but a profit nonetheless! The majority of the Scandina-vian items were ordered by Treasurer Anne Weyker’s sister Jane, who operates the Weather Vane – a wonderfulgift shop in Oconomowoc. The club reimbursed her for the wholesale cost of the items, plus shipping.
Two consigners also took part in the booth – a candle maker and a woodcarver. The carvings were particularlypopular and that individual donated $40 of his sales back to the club.
Special thanks to Syl Weyker and Sarah (daughter of Syl and Anne) who were the intrepid salespeople through-out the three-day show. And thanks to Marlin Krupp for the use of the white shed where the ScandinavianTreasures resided!
A huge Thanks to the entire committee and memberswho started the Midwest Fjord Horse Club 25 years ago.
