THE BOYS ARE HOME!: The red hot Dodgers, who have been gone
for the past week and a half, return home tonight to start a season-long
tying 10-game homestand beginning with the first of four contests
against the Braves. Los Angeles won its season-high 11th consecutive
game last night following a 9-1 blowout victory over the White Sox,
which was called off in the top of the eighth inning due to rain. The 11-
game winning streak matches the longest streak in the Majors this season
with the Houston Astros (May 25-June 5) and is the first time the
Dodgers have won 11 in a row since July 28-Aug. 8, 2006. Tonight, the
club looks to win its 12th straight game for the first time since 1976
(April 24-May 7) and according to Stats LLC., the 12 game winning
streak would be the longest in the Majors since the Indians won 14
consecutive games last year (June 17-July 1) and the longest in the NL
since the Braves won 14 straight from July 26-Aug. 9, 2013. Following
the four-game series against the Braves, the Boys in Blue will continue
the homestand with a three-game Interleague matchup with the Twins
and a three-game set against the Giants.
The Dodgers, who hold the best record in the Majors with a
66-29 mark (3.0 games ahead of the Astros), have won 31 of
35 since June 7. That stretch is the best in modern franchise
history (since 1920) and Los Angeles is the first team in the
big leagues to win 31 games in a 35-game stretch since the
1977 Royals, while also tying the 1941 and 1947 Yankees for
the best 35-game stretch in the last 100 years. During that span,
the Dodgers have been truly dominant:
Dodgers’ Numbers and Ranks – Since June 7
Home Runs 72 – 1st in MLB
Team ERA 2.86 – 1st in MLB
Opponent BA .219 – 1st in MLB
R/G 5.8 – 1st in NL (2nd in MLB: Houston – 6.44)
OBP .367 – 1st in NL (2nd in MLB: Houston - .372)
OPS .894 – 1st in NL (2nd in MLB: Houston - .911)
SOURCE: STATS, LLC
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Dodgers have won
44 consecutive games in which they held a lead of any size at
any time, which set a new MLB mark, breaking the record held
by the Cubs for 111 years. The 1906 Cubs had a streak of 43
consecutive conversions of a lead into a win.
Los Angeles, which has won 18 of its last 19 games at Dodger
Stadium, is a Major-League best 39-11 (.780) at home this
season, which is currently the best home winning percentage
in franchise history, surpassing the 1953 Dodgers (60-17,
.779). According to Stats LLC., the Dodgers’ .780 winning
percentage at home would be the best single-season mark by
an NL team since the 1975 Reds, who went 64-17 (.790) at
home – that Reds team would eventually win the World Series.
The Dodgers will face the Braves for the first time this season
after taking the 2016 series 5-1, including winning their last
five games against Atlanta. Since the 2014 season, Los
Angeles has gone 14-5 against the Braves, while also winning
eight of nine home games during that span. The Boys in Blue
have also gone 14-3 against NL East opponents this year,
including winning their last eight contests.
The Dodgers’ +181 run differential is the best in the Major
Leagues, 15 runs better than the Astros.
The Dodgers are 66-29 through 95 games, their best 95-game
start to the season since the 1942 Brooklyn team, which went
67-28 in its first 95 games, en route to 104 wins
#BOMBSQUAD: The Dodgers slugged four home runs in last night’s
contest with the contributions from Chris Taylor, Kiké Hernández and
Corey Seager. Hernández blasted two home runs with solo shots in the
second and fourth innings for his ninth and 10th longballs of the year,
while also recording his second career multi-home run game (also: April
15, 2016 vs. SF). According to Stats LLC., the Dodgers now have seven
players with 10 homers in 2017, the most of any NL club. Seager belted
his 44th career longball as a shortstop, surpassing Rafael Furcal for the
most homers by a shortstop in Los Angeles Dodger history and tying
Glenn Wright for the second most in franchise history.
THE CT SHOW: Dodger infielder/outfielder Chris Taylor led the
game off last night with his first career leadoff home run for his 11th
longball of the season and finished the contest going 3-for-4, with three
runs, a double and two RBI for his fourth multi-hit game in his last five
contests. In 13 July games, Taylor is batting .434 (23-for-49), which
leads the club and ranks fourth in the National League. Since the All-
Star break, Taylor has been crushing the ball, as he leads the Majors with
a .517 (12-for-21) batting average (min. 20 PA), while also recording six
runs, two doubles, two triples, one home run and two RBI in five games.
BATTING CROWN?: Justin Turner, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI
and a walk in last night’s contest, collected his team-leading 30th multi-
hit game of the season (T-7th) and improved his Major League leading
batting average to .372. Turner, who also leads the big leagues with a
.466 on-base percentage, vies to become the first Dodger to win a batting
crown since Tommy Davis in 1963. According to Stats LLC., since the
Dodgers moved to the West Coast in 1958, only three previous times has
the MLB leader in average has been sporting the Dodger Blue:
LAD Ranking 1st in MLB in Batting Average, 1958-2017
(based on official batting average qualifiers)
Tommy Davis, 1962 .346
Tommy Davis, 1963 .326
Eddie Murray, 1990* .330
Justin Turner, 2017 .372 (thru July 19)
* Willie McGee won the NL batting title in 1990. He finished the
season with a .324 batting average, but posted a .335 mark with the
Cardinals before being traded to the Athletics on Aug. 29, 1990.
ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: Despite going hitless in last night’s game,
Dodger rookie sensation Cody Bellinger is tied with Joey Votto for
second in the NL with 26 home runs, four behind Giancarlo Stanton.
Since his April 25 call-up, the 22-year-old leads the Major Leagues with
26 home runs and is tied for the second most in RBI with 62, five RBI
behind Nolan Arenado. Since Bellinger’s promotion, Los Angeles is 57-
18 (.760) and is 56-16 (.778) when he starts.
When Bellinger and MVP candidate Justin Turner are in the
lineup together, the Dodgers are 38-9 (.809).
B-MAC ATTACK: Los Angeles will send right-hander Brandon
McCarthy to the mound tonight for his 16th start of the season, as he
looks to record his seventh win of the year. McCarthy opened the second
half of the season for the Dodgers in Miami in his last outing, allowing
four runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings with three strikeouts and did not
factor in the decision in the clubs 6-4 victory. In nine starts at Dodger
Stadium this season, he has gone 4-1 with a 2.88 ERA (16 ER/50.0 IP)
and has held the opposition to a .215/.276/.287 slashline, while striking
out 37 batters against 14 walks.
In a home run heavy season, McCarthy has been one of the best
in the business in preventing the longball as he has only
allowed 0.44 homers per nine innings (4 HR/82.2 IP) this year,
which is the best mark in the Majors (min. 15 starts).
JUST CAN’T HIT’EM: Following last night’s 9-1 victory, the
Dodgers once again lowered their Major-League best ERA to 3.07. The
club also leads the Majors with a 1.12 WHIP, a .224 opponents’ batting
average and 10 shutouts, while leading the NL in strikeouts (911).
The Dodger bullpen leads the NL with a 2.90 ERA (100
ER/310.0 IP), a 1.10 WHIP (1st MLB) and 3.88 strikeout-to-
walk ratio (357 SO/92 BB). Two-time All-Star closer Kenley
Jansen recorded his 24th save on Tuesday (2nd, NL) and
currently owns the longest active save streak this year (24).
Jansen has thrown scoreless relief in 21 of his last 22
appearances, going 2-0 with 16 saves and posting a 0.38 ERA
(1 ER/24.0 IP) with 27 strikeouts during that span.
ROSTER MOVE: Prior to tonight’s game, the Dodger reinstated left-
handed pitcher Grant Dayton from the 10-day disabled list (neck
stiffness) and designated right-handed pitcher Sergio Romo for
assignment.
