PROJECT TITLE:SCHOOL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Background Information• School management system is used for
managing resources.• School management was initially manual
in Kenya.• Technological advancements necessitated
change.• Notable changes has been realized
Problem Statement
• Difficulty in retrieving of records.• Manual files require large storage
space.• Security is limited to physical controls.• Standalone systems ignores vital
modules.
Objectives
• To develop and test school management system (General)
• To find out SMS currently used in Kisumu.• To determine flaw in current SMS.• To design an integrated SMS.• To develop and test the SMS.
Significance
• Alignment towards realization of Vision 2030.
• Promotes efficient school management.• Enhances information security.• Increases accessibility to information• It cuts down the management costs.
Scope• Designed for Kenya secondary schools• It has the following modules
– Administration and admission module– Finance and examination module– Staff management and bulk SMS module
Limitation• Cannot be adopted by other countries• Does not include library management
CONCEPT OF MANGEMENT

LITERATURE REVIEW CONT
SCHOOL MANAGEMNT IN DEVELOPINGCOUNTRIES
• Most third world countries lag behind• Few schools use computers in accounting Aguyo (2004)• Inadequate power and manpower attributes
this• Despite challenges, Kenya has made steps• It adopted IT policy in 2004 MOE(2004)• Malaysia IT policy has equally evolved Zain et all(2004)
LITERATURE REVIEW CONT
RESEARCH PROCESS
• Visit Kisumu county MOE for systems information
• Visit sampled secondary schools to find out challenges
• Use UML to aid design• Use OOP to develop a prototype• Use unit, integrated and full test
METHODOLOGY
RESEARCH DESIGN
• Administer interview to strategic managers• Administer questionnaire to staff and students• on-site observation for first hand information
METHODOLOGY cont
DATA COLLECTION
RESEARCH DESIGN cont
• Translate business requirements into ERD• Model functional requirements using USE CASE• Establish relationship between subsystems
using context diagrams• Model data flow using DFD• Model activities flow using Activity diagram
METHODOLOGY cont
