From the BridgeCommodore DAVE TROWBRIDGE
I’m really stumped. David has given me no ammo with which to roast him about in this article, well one small thing of which both he and my Pops are equally guilty. I’ve made no secret that cooking for David is a challenge—he won’t eat vegetables, fi sh, most shellfi sh and anything that to him that looks weird—unless its doused in melted cheese. While my Pops loves his veggies (only normal ones whatever the hell that means), he hates chicken, melted cheese, brown eggs, any red meat that’s not burnt and seasoning—he doesn’t like seasoning. Add all of that together and I’m pretty limited when it comes to dinner time at my house. I fi nally decided to hell with both of them because I’m tired of eating such a limited variety of food and just started cooking what I want. The two of them have now come up with a pretty funny way to
let me know how much they disapprove of my unwillingness to cater to them anymore. Do you all remember the Garfi eld cartoon…big orange cat that would let you know how he felt about you by doing a loud AKKK noise and tossing up a big hair ball? Well now David and Pops walk into the kitchen while I’m cooking take one look, shake their whole body (ugly face included) do the big AKKK sound and walk away. Question, what poison do you recommend I add to their food?
Never fear there is one club member who does deserve a bit of hazing this month—our very own Scott Landcastle. I’m sure others will write about how great his fi rst cruise turned out. How he managed to get a restaurant that wasn’t even open for business yet to open their doors just for our club and serve us 3 fantastic meals. How Ken Sheppard secured an interesting speaker and how all hands were on deck to help folks manage the swift current when departing. On the surface, it looked like a well-oiled machine but leading up to this lovely event it was the biggest damn mess
the likes of which this club hasn’t seen since the planning of my fi rst cruise.
Poor Roy and Sue Vinyard, who did their best to guide our seriously misguided Scott…you might notice that their hair is a bit thinner from pulling it out…that boy even had the nerve to get a bit huff y. At the end of the cruise, David and Scott were talking about how it went (which was great as I said earlier) and Scott admitted that he should have read the information that’s on our website about arranging for a cruise. Scott’s own words “there’s some really helpful stuff on there.” Well duh Scott why do you think we put on there?
My calling out Scott was not meant to embarrass or humiliate him (well maybe just a little bit). It’s a cautionary tale to you future fi rst time cruise leaders—read the guidance on the club website fi rst, before you start making arrangements. If you do, your cruise will run smoothly from start to fi nish, you’ll reduce your aggravation 10-fold, and more importantly you will not end up in one of my articles. Sorry Scott…I still love you!

Panic and peace. Love and
marriage. Oil and water.
In the words of Jimmy Van
Heusen, and performed by
Frank Sinatra, “you can’t
have one without the other”.
The element of one extreme
emotion to the other is a
constant in our daily live.
Whether it’s at work or home
life, or even in our quest to
find and enjoy relaxation
during our off time. I so
much look forward of my
time in life when I am on
my way to Perry’s, to say
hello to Joe and Debra,
and to my beloved Lady
“I”. When I’m giving her a
quick bath and once over,
(no not Debra). Loading
provisions, warming her up,
and heading to any weekend
get-away. The panic inside
me is a consistent reminder
to be sure that all is done
correctly, safely, so I may
find the destination to where
we all will gather and share
that peace of mind found
in friendship. And I see it in
all of us, and for the same
reasons. Worrying about the
wind, current, damn small
opening into the horse shoe.
Wholly crap look at all that
pretty gelcoat! Hell, look at
that HUGE anchor on my
bow! Panic, but controlled.
Friends on dock, friends on
radio, friends on lines and
rails. Peace.
Scott, and his first
sponsored cruise to Jelly
Stone Park, aka, Tower
Park Marina. He was bold
enough to allow us to
be Guinee pigs to Chef
Julio and his not yet open
restaurant, The Tower Park
Waterfront Grill. You could
see all the wheels turning. Is
there enough room, is there
enough power, fenders,
cleats, plates, food, chairs,
money? Will the wind calm
down? Will all show up?
Will I survive this? WHY did
I do this? Panic. In the end
Scott, job well done! All
showed up, and then some.
New members greeted and
welcomed into the fold.
Chef Julio and his staff were
quite gracious. The food
was abundant and flavorful.
Ranger Smith and his crew,
made sure all had power
and were well secured.
Friends relaxed and happy
with another. Peace.
The love and marriage of
club members gathering
together with their wives
husbands, significant others,
families, and of course, their
Sea Ray’s. Peace.
To the Garrison’s and the
Brandt’s, welcome to our
club. We are happy to have
you aboard. All of us are
looking forward to sharing
all that we have as a club,
as a family, with you and
yours.
Oil and water? As your Vice
Commodore, I vow to get to
the bottom of that issue!
In closing, as panic
encroaches, and my fear of
failure drives me, I am and
will be searching for next
years board members to join
me in leading this club into
2019. Who is willing to join
me to lead? Any volunteer’s?

Dateline Bali…
Well Toto, we are not in the
Delta anymore. After more
than 25 hours of planes,
airport lunges, airport
shopping malls, and more
than a few cocktails we
arrived Sunday evening in
beautiful Bali! We traveled
through Hong Kong and
Singapore on our way,
The first thing we noticed
about Bali, other than it is
an Island and very beautiful,
is how big the cities are
and how many millions
of people and ubiquitous
cars, and motor bikes are
going everywhere, in every
direction, all at once! There
are certainly beaches and
mountains that maintain the
serene and mystical flavor of
what one would expect of
an Island paradise.
Monday morning we were
up bright and early and
were joined by our driver/
tour guide to head out to
see the sights. As we were
staying near the Seminyak
Beach area, we focused
on the local sights, which
included several temples
and beautiful vistas and
beaches. After a long day
driving through miles and
miles of traffic and crowded
street scenes, it was late
afternoon and, surprise/
surprise Ibu and Bapek (that
is what everyone here calls
Suze and me, and roughly
translates into Madame and
Sir to find a watering hole,
near the beach to catch one
of the famous Indian Ocean
sunsets.
Our 20-year-old guide
suggested a local hangout
called the Single Fin, which
we jumped on
forthwith. We got
there a few hours
before sunset and
spent the next
several hour’s
sight and people
watching. It was
awesome.
The next morning we were
picked up by guide #2,
both guides are relatives of
the local Tourism magnate
Ponyi, and were terrific.
Ponyi’s sister was our host
for day two, our trip up
to the mountains and the
local Art hub of Ubud. The
trip itself was again more
driving through crowded
streets, but once we got to
Ubud we understand what
the bid deal was about this
area; lush forests, local art,
beautiful people and resorts.
The highlight for Suze was
the Monkey Forest. This
is truly an amazing place
right in the heart of the city.
Hundreds of “free range”
local monkeys roaming at
will and “performing” for
the attention and food that
humans always bring to
such places. Below are just
a few of the photos we took
while there and you can
see the joy that accrued to
both Suze and her monkey
friends.

The Good the pancakes and
the Green stuff.
Well here it is my take
on the St. Patrick’s Day
weekend cruise to Tower
Park. I believe it was a very
successful cruise. If I do
say so myself. I saw the
Good in all the attendees.
When the Cruise began
Friday morning for me, I was
met by John Halling. and
transported back to Tower
Park in Toyyot Docking
was fairly simple with the
tide and wind. John made
short work of finding enough
power to keep Toyyot in the
power she is accustom to.
Roy and Sue Vinyard arrived
in “In His Time” and were
able to run the tide into the
Horseshoe. Robert arrived
in Lady I and jumped right
to work assisting in docking
boats arriving. Lew Sea
arrived and took up station
on the outside dock Elaine
was ready to party and Jack
was ready to get set up and
back into his Captain’s chair.
I was glad they made it over
the hill as the weather was
not at it’s best. Coventina
arrived and Rodger was
ready to relax.
As the weather subsided
Plan B arrived as did
Wine Down. Trow’s Nest
anchored down the outside
berth behind Lew Sea,
not to close though. The
festivities began and we all
found our places walking
the dock or sitting talking
with friends. Some of our
new members stopped by
Dennis Garrison Pops Yacht
and Monique, Bill Brant and
Michelle in Miss Me. Deja
Vu Again provided much
needed wind blockage also.
Friday nights are always fun
after a long week
Sea Norita arrived Saturday
morning after we had a
wonderful breakfast, sorry
no pancakes but what we
did have was great. Thank
you to Chef Julio and staff
for working hard to make
us comfortable. Saturday
was a nice calm day and
more Club members arrived
and enjoyed breakfast. The
evening festivities began
with Corned Beef Cabbage
red potatoes and dinner
rolls, a meal fit for an Earl.
The Club was treated
to a Sales preparation
presentation by Chris
Simpson. Very informative.
Thank you Chris and Ken for
arranging the presentation. I
believe we had 36 for dinner.
Sunday was closing down
with another wonderful
breakfast with “Pan Cakes”
yes Chef Julio came
through. All-in-all it was a
wonderful weekend.
Thanks for making my first
Cruise leader experience a
positive learning experience.

Tomorrow morning we leave
Bali, head to Singapore for
a few days, and then off on
the first leg of our cruise(s).
Keep an eye on Facebook,
as we will post throughout.
Sorry we missed what
looked to be a great cruise
out to Tower Park, where it
appeared that at least Mike

rare form.
See you on the water in May.

Although Jude submitted
for three extinguishers on
the same request, they were
delivered weeks apart. A
Kidde representative said
that is very common.
Without a huge amount
of effort and in a fairly
short amount of time our
fire extinguishers were
exchanged. Now we can
use those skills taught to
us by the firefighters and
feel confident that our
extinguishers will function
properly.

Saturday, March 24 there
was a special get together
at Perry’s Boat Harbor. We
were celebrating the second
most important event in
a boaters life, in this case
Bruce and Deanna Curley
who sold Deanna’s Dream.
Although a sad occasion
for the those in attendance
and the club at large, Bruce
and Deanna assured that
“we have not seen the last
of the Curley’s” at SRBCNC

Bruce and Deanna, lifetime
members of SRBCNC

hauling, packing, unpacking,

Many of us have pleasant
memories of the cruises
that featured firefighters.
We were taught how to
correctly put out a fire with
an extinguisher. Remember
the acronym PASS (pull, aim,
squeeze, sweep). Well what
happens if you use all that
great knowledge and the
extinguisher doesn’t work?
Don’t let that happen.
Kidde, a major manufacturer
of fire extinguishers, is
in the process of a huge
recall. I first read about
it in a Consumer Reports
magazine. Then Jude read
about it in one of her many
boating magazines. We
also got a letter from our
RV manufacturer. The recall
involves 37.8 million portable
fire extinguishers which can
become clogged, require
extra force to discharge,
or can fail to activate. The
recall includes 134 models
made between January 1,
1973 (not a typo) and August
15, 2017.
Kidde is replacing any
affected models and the
process is fairly simple.
First locate all your fire
extinguishers. That may
be the most difficult part.
Jude took care of the two
we have on the boat and
the one we have in our
kitchen at home. She
was very proud when she
announced to me that the
fire extinguisher project
was complete. Then I
mentioned that we have
one on the RV, one in each
garage, and a spare on the
shelf. In total we have seven
extinguishers. This actually
worked out well because I
was also able to go through
the process which should
make this article more
accurate.
Once you locate all your
extinguishers, you look for
the model number and
serial number. These are
fairly obvious on the label.
Go to kidde.com to request
a FREE replacement. Find
the product safety recall
page. At the bottom of
the page click on which
extinguisher type you have
such as plastic handle. It
will take you to a page
to enter the model and
serial number. The next
page will inform you if your
extinguisher is affected or
not affected by the recall.
Of our seven only three
needed to be replaced.
By the way, if you have
six or more extinguishers,
Kidde requests that you
call (855)271-0773 instead
of submitting your request
online.
Kidde has made the
replacement process
extremely easy. They
ship you a new
extinguisher. Interestingly
fire extinguishers cannot
be delivered on a regular
delivery truck. They
are transported on a
hazardous material truck.
You will need the original
packaging to return your
old extinguishers. Save the
outer brown box and the
inner extinguisher box. Pack
the old extinguisher and
label it using the enclosed
return label. Be sure not
to remove the diamond
label that indicates it is a
hazardous material. Kidde
uses Fed Ex for shipping. If
you are used to Fed Ex, this
process is a little different.
You cannot just schedule
a pick-up. Enclosed with
the package is the Fed Ex
number to call to arrange a
hazardous pick-up.
