Dean’s Notes By Edward Alan Moore, DMA - Dean ([email protected]) On Monday, March 28, instead of heading off to our monthly guild dinner and meeting, many of us will be basking in the glow of another glorious Easter celebration. Even though we will not have a regular dinner meeting due to Easter, there is still a fantastic
opportunity to gather as a chapter and support the Organ Artists Series on March 13th, at 4:00 PM, at Westminster Presbyterian Church. The featured performer is one of our profession’s finest young
performers and teachers, Isabelle Demers from Baylor University.
We can be very proud of the Organ Artists Series and the Pittsburgh Organ Academy, two important programs of the AGO Chapter. Thirty‐seven continuous seasons of bringing the finest organists to Pittsburgh is remarkable and unique in our profession and to the Guild. In an attempt to attract younger audiences, OAS has instituted free admission to all OAS concerts for students with ID this season! Unfortunately, this fantastic deal has been greatly underutilized in the first two concerts of the season.
In lieu of our regular March meeting, I hope to see you at Westminster Presbyterian on March 13th. Please spread the word to your students and other students you know about the free admission to this concert for students. Those students who are already organists will hear a fabulous concert. And one of those students who is not an organist might be inspired to learn more about the organ! You never know until you ask!
See you on March 13th!
Organ Artist Series Concert – Isabelle Demers – March 13th By John Henninger – OAS Director ([email protected]) The Organ Artists Series will be presenting Isabelle Demers in concert on Sunday, March 13 at 4:00 pm at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Upper St. Clair. This concert is being co‐presented by Westminster Church’s Music & Arts Series. The church is located on Route 19 about 10 miles south of the Liberty Tunnels; and ½ mile south of the South Hills Village. The church features an Austin organ of 81 ranks built in 1991.
Isabelle Demers is Organ Professor and Head of the Organ Program at Baylor University in Texas where she teaches applied organ and courses in the organ curriculum. A native of Québec, she is rapidly becoming recognized as one of North America's most virtuosic organists. Her concert at the 2010 national convention of the American Guild of Organists, in Washington, D.C., was received with great acclaim not only by critics, who deemed it “one of the most outstanding events of the convention” (The American Organist), but also by the standing‐room‐only audience, which called her back five times. A review of her concert for the joint ISO‐AIO convention in 2010 said that “she enchanted the entire audience with her virtuoso performance,” leaving the entire congress in an atmosphere of “Demers fever.”
She began piano and organ study at age eleven at the Montréal Conservatory of Music. After graduation in 2003 she studied on scholarship for a year in Paris at the École Normale de Paris‐Alfred Cortot. She received her Master's and Doctoral degrees from The Juilliard School in New York City where she studied with Paul Jacobs.
The concert will be followed by a reception at the church. Please plan on attending and inviting a friend, colleague and choir member!

Music has the power of producing a certain effect on the moral character of the soul, and if it has the power to do this, it is clear that the young must be directed to music and must be educated in it. ‐ Aristotle Contributed by Chapter Member Wilberta Pickett

Planning Ahead For April and May Joint Chapter Meeting By Nathan Carterette - Sub-Dean ([email protected]) With no meeting scheduled for March we can all focus our energies on Holy Week and Easter. In April, Bruce Stevens will make a presentation on Bach at Saint Paul Cathedral. Our final meeting in May will be very special as we will gather in Latrobe at Saint Vincent to see and hear the new Buzard organ. We will be joined
by the Indiana and Greensburg Chapters. It might be helpful to think ahead as this is a large event and a bit of a drive. We are planning on renting at least one bus for transport to Latrobe for the dinner meeting. But you should know there is a whole day of events open to the public that you may want to attend beforehand. This includes an hour of "open console" at 2 P.M. when anyone can try the organ; a video presentation of the brief history of the organ; an organ crawl; and Vespers. This is all before the dinner meeting. If you want to get the full experience, consider making a day of it. If not, the rental bus will most likely depart to arrive in time for the dinner meeting unless there is enough demand for an earlier bus. I hope this information helps you to plan. If you have more questions or want more specifics, please email me or Rev. Cyril Hurnyak at [email protected].
